univalent··on Day of week of procedure and 30 day mortality for elective surgery (2013)
I work on the video side of things and know nothing about the mech eng part. What I can tell you is that during the day there is definitely fecal matter in the scope one case to another during the day after after autoclave and sterilization. The first case of the day, the scope is clean. I don't know what's different about overnight processing in the sterile processing department. And I've seen this at many hospitals. There's been some startups that have tried sheaths to cover the scope but could not make it work.
univalent··on Day of week of procedure and 30 day mortality for elective surgery (2013)
Pro tip: if getting a colonoscopy, always always get the first appointment of the day. I work in med devices and ummm those scopes still have poop left over between procedures. Its not harmful, but still...
univalent··on Happy New Year HN!

univalent··on Citizenship bill puts India on a path to become a Hindu nationalist state
The bill allows followers of 6 different religions (Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi and Christian) who live in the neighboring Muslim majority countries (Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi and Christian) to apply for asylum if they face persecution because of their religious beliefs.

Said 3 countries have a long history of intolerance and persecution of their non Muslim citizens/residents.

How exactly is this making India a Hindu nationalist state?

univalent··on A deep learning framework for neuroscience
I'm so sorry to hear that :( Hang in there.
univalent··on Amazon Care
Cerner does this in office in Kansas City. I thought it was pretty cool. Keeps their costs (presumably) lower.
univalent··on Attorney General will ask Zuckerberg to halt plans for end-to-end encryption
Why should Facebook guarantee that it won't lead to security concerns? That's not their job. Is the AG going to go around asking all companies not to do E2E encryption until they can each make that guarantee?
univalent··on California bans private prisons
Great job CA legislators. Prisons for profit were an abomination. Good riddance.
univalent··on Apple Watch Series 5
The Watch does too much. I love the Fitbit Versa because it helps me get off my phone. Just important notifications and reading texts and that's it. I can't really "do" much on it except glance at notifications and that's exactly what I want. Helped me keep my phone in another room in the house or in my bag at work and not look at it at all.
univalent··on It's later than you think
Heartbreaking to read and every parent's worst nightmare. Life has become so fast and everyone works too much these days. Growing up in India, I remember my parents (who had challenging jobs as a math prof and doctor) still spent all evening and all weekends with us and my one surviving grandparent also lived with us. Cousins came by every week and there was so much family around. Now, here we are with all this money in a giant house in this expensive place, working 60-70 hours a week and I wonder if I'm doing right by my kids. Need to spend more time with them..
univalent··on My Apology Regarding Jeffrey Epstein
And he's an Ethics professor? I am still fuming at having to pay for a (required) Ethics class at business school. What a load of crock that was! Come, learn how to be ethical in one credit spread over 4 Sunday seminars.
univalent··on ‘They Get Fired All the Time. And They Have No Idea Why’
There's this beautiful scene in the movie 'Margin Call' that I liked about engineering and building things. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TNX7u_8KL7g Yes, I have also been in shitty situations working with idiots. But the saving grace is, at the end of it all, you have built something that hopefully helps people. In your case, you clearly did and you should be proud of that.
univalent··on On Mathematical Beauty in Physics
As others have said, it is beautiful because of the relationship between e and pi. This is mind blowing. What do these 2 constants have in common? Not a thing. I feel the same way about the pi / 4 = 3/4 x 5/4 x .... infinite series. Why a relationship between pi and prime numbers?
univalent··on On Mathematical Beauty in Physics
Reminds me of this paper in Nature from some time back. Especially, the Euler's identity graph from the paper is pretty amazing. https://www.nature.com/news/equations-are-art-inside-a-mathe...
univalent··on Ask HN: What Neural Networks/Deep Learning Books Should I Read?
+1 for this book. Such a pleasure to read and to work through the samples.
univalent··on Tourism Is Overwhelming the World's Top Destinations
Just limit tourist visas to a level that's comfortable? It just becomes a simple wait if you want to see a place. No different to waiting in a queue to go inside any attraction. And maybe invest tourism dollars to conservation of these places/landmarks?
univalent··on Is Ebola Evolving into a Deadlier Virus?

univalent··on Svalbard is as close as you can get to a place with open borders
I took the ferry from Dublin to Wales while on vacation. We collected all our passports once the ferry docked and we went to our car preparing for the immigration officers, police etc. There was no one. Literally. We only saw sheep for the first 10 miles or so after driving off the boat.
univalent··on The Death of Social Reciprocity in the Era of Digital Distraction
iOS has a feature where you can setup certain contacts to override your 'do not disturb' settings. Check that out.
univalent··on Ask HN: Are Lucene/Solr/ES Still Used for Search?
Still using Lucene here searching through short text documents in a Java based server product.
univalent··on Ask HN: Which Laptop to Switch to from Macbook?
A vote for the Thinkpad P51. For those that get headaches from laptops and other displays, I found this one that you can spec up and does not use pulse width modulation.
univalent··on Alan Turing to feature on new £50 note
Great recognition!!! Excellent design as well. Well done 'Bank of England'.
univalent··on Snake Venom Use as a Substitute for Opioids: A Case Report and Review
Not people who just want to get high. Heck, I do that myself. Just seems extreme folly to have poisonous snakes bite you on the tongue. Right near the brain.
univalent··on Snake Venom Use as a Substitute for Opioids: A Case Report and Review
This isn't new. I remember seeing infomercials from the government in the early 90's asking people not to do the snake bite on tongue method to get a high. I really doubt it was a king cobra though. That would kill the person for sure. (You could argue they deserve it).
univalent··on Oscar Wilde’s talk inspired his rise and led to his downfall
On fox hunting by English country gentlemen: “The unspeakable in pursuit of the uneatable!”
univalent··on Varanasi: India's city where people come to die
You are probably right. I remember my mother called it Tri-veni-sangamam. I see now that is in Allahabad. But we took a boat to this spot from one side of the river in Varanasi. Can that be done? Wondering if we took a dunk at some random spot and were duped.
univalent··on Varanasi: India's city where people come to die
We visited Varanasi when I was around 10 with my family. The Ganges was flooded (some structures were underwater) and there were crocs aplenty. The shopkeepers warned us. My dad insisted we rent a boat so we could go to this holy spot where 3 rivers merge so we could take a dip. Fast forward 10 minutes and there's 4 of us in the boat with a boatman stuck in some kind of swirling water and the boat spinning round and round. The boatman asked if we knew swimming (none of us did). I look about and remember seeing a crocodile (or at least a very threatening looking floating log) some 200 feet away. The guy finally got control of the boat and we escaped unharmed. Fun times...
univalent··on Anxiety: An Interactive Story
Yes, I've taken Valium as needed for more an a decade. Agree with others on the dangers of it and similar medications. But its a lifesaver for temporary relief.
