Ahoy! I'm Morris, I work as a senior service delivery engineer at GitHub.

Previously, I consulted as a platform engineer at LEGO, served as a technical design lead at British Airways, worked as a software engineer at Vitsœ, and later as a platform engineer at Tumelo.

I live in Mid Wales with my two orange cats, David and Norman.

unfunco··on Lego latest retailer to leave troubled San Francisco Centre
Hamsterdam.
unfunco··on Sqids – Generate short unique IDs from numbers
I've always thought it was called bijection.
unfunco··on Show HN: I saw this mind-blowing experiment, so I made a simple version of it
Browser Ball maybe? https://experiments.withgoogle.com/browser-ball
unfunco··on Finding services companies via their TXT records
The MX records will tell you they use Gmail.
unfunco··on Britsh Museum Collection Search
It could be related to a lot of recent Just Stop Oil protests, where orange paint / powder is thrown on artworks in museums, on pitches and playing surfaces at live sports events, and many other imaginative examples.

unfunco··on Nature: Programming language to experience the joy of programming
It'll return 0.
unfunco··on OpenBSD/ARM64 on Hetzner Cloud
It's the same with AWS and GCP and Digital Ocean isn't it? An active card check is performed but that's about it, you PAYG and get billed at the end of the month.
unfunco··on Steve Jobs had a “beer test” he used for job interviews
I'd imagined Jobs more of a cider person.
unfunco··on Raytheon asks retirees for help making new Stinger anti-air missiles
This happened in the United Kingdom, a prankster flying a drone managed to halt flights at Gatwick, then not so long later managed to also halt departures from Heathrow.

unfunco··on Ask HN: What are some Git aliases you setup that save you time?

    [alias]
      br = branch
      co = checkout
      d = diff
      dc = diff --cached
      ec = config --global -e
      latest = log -1 HEAD
      please = push --force-with-lease
      st = status
Aliases for git can be added to ~/.gitconfig
unfunco··on There oughta be a bullet time video booth
I went to the Monza F1 GP in 2019 and they had a bullet-time video tent sort of thing, with a trampoline in the middle if I remember correctly, it was free to use in the fan zone.
unfunco··on Roblox: Ten-year-old spent £2.5k of mum's money without her knowing
> "We'd just seen hundreds of transactions, these payment confirmations, so then the panic set in - oh my gosh, whose card is this on?," said Georgina.

It was over many transactions, not a single transaction for £2500, and it's probably likely that the parent had previously purchased whatever the heck is purchasable on this game for their daughter, giving the transaction some sort of signal that it's okay.

unfunco··on TikTok is now banned in Montana
What does free speech have to do with this?
unfunco··on UK: No-fault evictions to be banned in reform of rental sector
Is there a law that states the deposit must be one month? You could adjust the contract so that if a tenant requests pets, they're liable for a larger deposit / cleaning bill when they leave.

I rent and have two cats, they pee in the litter tray so that's not an issue, but they cause all sorts of other damage, mine like sitting on the bannister at the top of the stairs, so there's loads of scratch marks on it because it's too high to jump up to it easily, they're very furry Norwegian forest cats that groom each other a lot, so I wake up frequently to vomited up cat balls on carpets, etcetera.

My deal with the landlord is that I'll just pay for whatever damage is done, even if that's higher than my deposit.

unfunco··on VSCode config to disable annoyances – telemetry, notifications, welcome pages
What's the difference between that and the built-in zen mode?
unfunco··on Most of us won't be inventing little languages (2004)
> Sergey seems to believe that the main barrier preventing the invention of new computer languages is that it's too difficult to write language-specific tools.

Was the eventual solution MPS? (https://www.jetbrains.com/mps/)

unfunco··on Google releases Bard to a limited number of users in the US and UK
It's not available to Workspace users, so I'm not going to bother trying it. As an aside, the name Bard is so low-effort and predictable, and a bit rubbish in my personal opinion.
unfunco··on Hardcoded Folder Icons in macOS
I used to use Disco, the website is still alive: https://discoapp.com

When a CD was burning, smoke would emanate from the app, and if you blew on your microphone the smoke would disperse.

unfunco··on Ask HN: When did GitHub replace standard Git commands with the “GitHub CLI?”
Google is more along the lines of: Invent. Deprecate.
unfunco··on CircleCI security alert: Rotate any secrets stored in CircleCI
A bit of a shameless plug for a relevant Terraform module I made (specific to GitHub in this case): https://github.com/unfunco/terraform-aws-oidc-github
unfunco··on Everything you’ve ever wanted to know about ‘Ghostwriter’ (2016)
We used to watch this in primary school (in mid-Wales c. 1995/96) as part of the school curriculum, I remember nostalgically searching for it on YouTube not so long back and noticed Samuel L. Jackson was a part of it.
unfunco··on Ask HN: If money was no object what software would you create?
> Unfortunately, the web development community isn't yet ready for such.

I think the web development community is already adopting this approach in a lot of places, except they're not limiting themselves to Go. Deno is written in Rust, a lot of Bun is written in Zig.

unfunco··on Hacker News Parody Thread (2013)
Is this accurate? There's not a single comment saying "x is my daily driver" and no mention of anything being considered harmful.
unfunco··on Why I Switched from Rust to Go on the Back End
Remote development maybe. IDE locally, compilation and execution remotely.
unfunco··on Making a Go program faster with a one-character change
PHP has implicit references too, objects are passed by reference by default (primitives by value, like your note)
unfunco··on Musk tells Twitter staff remote working will end
He probably could have saved a lot of money by making that decision before making half of the Twitter staff redundant.
unfunco··on Kathleen Booth, the inventor of assembly language, has died
I sadly hadn't heard of her, and her Wikipedia page has no mention of any state awards such as an OBE or MBE (maybe she might have refused them) and she likely died in the window where there was no 100th birthday card from the Queen/King.
unfunco··on How to build software like an SRE
It's an initialism, not an acronym. And _an_ SRE is correct.
unfunco··on Dear Chess World
