unforeseen9991··on The Surprising Benefits of Relentlessly Auditing Your Life
This sounds like a dystopian nightmare come true
unforeseen9991··on A novel data-compression technique for faster computer programs
yes!

And that scene from Johnny Mnemonic was priceless for me:

unforeseen9991··on Musk to review all of Tesla's expenses in new cost cutting plan
If they weren't already spread thin this would be a good investment, as they are learning and pushing the envelope. That's a valuable asset and could make a huge difference in long term.
unforeseen9991··on Ask HN: What is your money-making side project outside programming?
The product you are looking for exists in the form of hedging out what you don't want in the ETF. Buy your ETF, and short the stocks you don't want in it.

ETF's are low to no rates because they don't have active management, and you are talking about active management.

With active management, you are describing the job of a hedge fund manager, and essentially wanting to create your own fund.

unforeseen9991··on Ask HN: What is your money-making side project outside programming?
This is pretty cool seeing this here. I've been a Patreon of your site for awhile now, and reading for far longer.
unforeseen9991··on Ask HN: What email client do you use?
Outlook for pretty much everything. I've been using email since it was a thing, and i've tried many others over the years, but i've also always had interaction with exchange servers since version 5.5 (last 15 years maybe?), so I had a reason to stay with Outlook.

As part of being a consultant I need to interact with about 6-7 exchange/o365 e-mail accounts, so Outlook is mandatory anyway.

On Android I use Nine. Sandboxing of exchange accounts was my primary reason for buying it several years back, and it's an excellent e-mail client.

I use gmail both mobile and web (Also in Outlook) for anything signup/newsletter/forum/junkmail related.

unforeseen9991··on Ask HN: How do you overcome Weltschmerz or fatalism about our future?
Something that I came across the other day really put people's opinion of the world and everything into context. I had been searching for something, and came across a forum thread from 2010.

Everyone on that thread was convinced that the end of the world was months or years away (Keep in mind this was just after the 2008 fiscal crisis and this was an economic related forum)...

They all were talking about these facts and posting statistics and everything that "proved" these certain countries were on the brink of failure..

Those events did not come to pass.

That's when I realized pretty much everyone is entirely full of shit, and ultimately life itself is your own attitude towards things.

Negativity and opinion are psychological virii.

unforeseen9991··on Suicide now leading cause of death among children aged 10 to 14 in Japan
Why is this on hacker news?
unforeseen9991··on Frackers Face Harsh Reality as Wall Street Backs Away
I'm in eastern Canada and there are many heat pumps here. Our cold here is typically a "wet cold" due to the Atlantic ocean, rather then the frigid cold of a central province like Ontario. I suspect they would work fine in Maine for the most part as well, for the same reasons.
unforeseen9991··on Ask HN: What VPN service are you currently using?
Same, for about 6 years.
unforeseen9991··on Chevy Volt discontinued: Chevrolet's last Volt rolls off the assembly line
Why wouldn't you just rent a car???

It would be a tiny fraction of the price and you get a brand new car to drive!

I do this, because I realized I would have approx 80% by renting for these outlier events and taxis as I work from home.

unforeseen9991··on Ask HN: What do productive people do on weekends?
I do the same thing on weekends that I do every day, but as a solopreneur who is single without kids and works from home, I have that flexibility. I typically laze around most mornings, meditation, cooking, reading, writing, long hot shower, exercise etc. Then I spend between 3-6hrs on productive things (revenue generating or in pursuit of revenue generation). Sometimes that will go much longer, depending on how into it I am, but rarely ever below 3hrs.

As mostly all of my friends are only fully available on weekends, that's usually the only thing that is different is that these activities that are in person usually only take place then.

The weekend as a thing is a very modern invention. I've found that i'm much more relaxed day to day and no longer have to "look forward" to a weekend for a break. I take those breaks as I need them. It did/does take a lot of cultivated discipline to make this work though, if you hate your work that's going to be a problem for this lifestyle.

unforeseen9991··on Adelaide Pilot Leaves 'I'm Bored' Message and Graffiti on Flight Radar
It is, it's part of training and licensing. You wouldn't want someone with no experience flying others or graduating to larger aircraft.

However I do see a large role for VR in the future filling much of this gap, along with automated systems making their way down to smaller aircraft.

unforeseen9991··on Tocqueville's Fatalism

unforeseen9991··on Teaching People to Trade Stocks Is Like Starting Them on Heroin – Munger
Exactly. Few people get the difference.

Speculative trading is not investing.

Professional trading, esp with leverage, is extraordinarily difficult to gain the required mentality, discipline, knowledge, and skills be consistently profitable. The common saying is that 90% fail, I believe it's higher, perhaps much higher. Learning trading was the most difficult thing I've done in my life. It's hard in a way most people don't grasp.

unforeseen9991··on The Communal Mind
I felt like I was reading the Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy, and realized that that reality is the current reality. Reading this was a journey.
unforeseen9991··on Ask HN: How do you get over the initial fear of learning something hard or new?
Realize you are going to die and there is nothing you can do about it.

Helps in all fear based situations.

unforeseen9991··on Deliveroo users are getting defrauded
Put it in the fridge or freezer?

Why would they ever sell it at a loss? Everyone needs food, so they get the value by consuming it themselves.

unforeseen9991··on Ask HN: Co-found with someone very vocal about his politically incorrect views?
I wouldn't even work with him for 0% stake, as there is obviously a misalignment of values.

Treat business partners like you would dating. All I see is massive red flags:

"...to people who did not show any signs of being interested in holding such a discussion, for example at networking events."

"He takes every opportunity to rant (in strong language)"

Some doors should remain closed. I question the network and the people who would associate with such a person, those people would not be my target customers.

unforeseen9991··on Ask HN: Did you delete your Facebook account in 2018?
Yes, I deleted mine earlier in the year. It creeps me out on privacy grounds, and was a net negative to life satisfaction.

I believe in technology being able to foster and improve things in the social and community aspects of people's lives, but I do know for sure Facebook is not it.

unforeseen9991··on The MAD Computer Program
I used to do these all the time, I think it was mainly from Byte magazines I would get from the library. It was on a TI-994A. External floppy drives were a godsend over the tape machine.
unforeseen9991··on How your life changes at different levels of wealth (2015)
That's normal, as the default mindset is the scarcity mindset, part of the survival instincts. I've had this for as long as I can remember, although for me it definitely starts to fade with age.
unforeseen9991··on Why Aren’t Rich People Happy With the Money They Have?
That is literally what the article is all about
unforeseen9991··on The Decline and Fall of the Zuckerberg Empire
I use 4, and it's not difficult to remember, for anyone worth chatting to.

You just naturally remember, like you would remember where your friends live. I guess if you are constantly dealing with "contacts" rather then friends it would get confusing.

unforeseen9991··on How Loneliness Is Tearing America Apart
That makes sense to me as well, simply along the lines of the concept of "Skin in the game". With the internet, the amount of risk you take to "be yourself" is small to nil, where in the real world there can be immediate and large consequences to you and your family.
unforeseen9991··on Ask HN: How do you keep checklists?
I've used many different apps over the years, until ultimately settling on todo.txt. It's a standardized format similar to taskwarrior, but it's simply a text file that apps interact with and is open source.

You can get it in a terminal, mobile, web, vim plugin, etc.
