It's actually more dangerous if they don't get burned. Then they think they can get away with their gamble again, but they put even more money in next time.

unforeseen9991··on Another U.S.-Wide Housing Slump Is Coming
"words"..
unforeseen9991··on We Just Witnessed the Fastest Stock Market Correction on Record
Correct

Also with 80%+ of all trading being algo, they are chasing each other to the bottom. The actual valuations might have been high anyway, but not to justify this.

We are likely going to hit one hell of a bounce once it does find the bottom.

unforeseen9991··on China to inject $174B of liquidity on Monday as markets reopen
Yeah, but that's just due to the meth
unforeseen9991··on How Long Will Australia Be Livable?
The costs of housing 100 people on mars, and the costs of housing 28 million in a similar fashion here on earth, are slightly higher.
unforeseen9991··on The modern web is becoming unusable
I've also found Twitter to be very valuable in my own profession.

I've found it to be a toxic hellhole of shit for everything else.

unforeseen9991··on Million Short
Yeah the thing with reddit is you always have to take everything there with a huge grain of salt.

Especially because every non-expert thinks they are an expert, and if you aren't familiar with the subject matter, it can be difficult to spot

That handicap is also mitigated by a fanatical fanbase who will support a failing company to the end on principle.

You can't say that about most current manufacturers

unforeseen9991··on The stockmarket is now run by computers, algorithms and passive managers
The very act of investing is the act of taking on risk. It's not free money, you are being rewarded for taking on the risk.

Every disclaimer you will see in the trading world has the disclaimer "Past performance is not an indication of future performance".

Everything in trading is probabilities, which is a way of thinking humans mightily struggle with.

A good day to day example is when a weather forecast calls for an 80% chance for rain on the weekend, so you cancel your camping trip. It ends up not raining, and you curse the meteorologist for being wrong.

They were not wrong - yet most people say they were, showing they are unable to think in a probabilistic way.

unforeseen9991··on The stockmarket is now run by computers, algorithms and passive managers
The point is that almost all algo's that are actually deployed and making 99%+ of these trades are not AI / ML based.

So reference to AlphaGo doesn't make sense here.

unforeseen9991··on On the way to being the most downvoted post ever on StackOverflow:Meta
I didn't assume, but I can tell right away when someone has English as a second language like you do.

I pick up grammatical oddities as I read, and if I had to guess i'd say your first language is of Asian origin, possibly Filipino.

Of course that doesn't mean you aren't American, but I assume you are not vs are in this kind of situation.

It probably depends on how "American" the forum for discussion is vs global, I see HN more American then say, Reddit.

unforeseen9991··on Show HN: Bot Land, a game where you fight others via code
You'd probably like Screeps then. It's aimed for developers, but it is JavaScript (Con to me, pro to others). Essentially a bot coding MMO.
unforeseen9991··on I Took a Pay Cut for a More Meaningful Job
Getting into the consultant and contract based work is what I did about 6 years ago, my only regret is not doing it sooner.

It truly is a level of "fuck you" freedom, especially after you've built up your nest egg.

unforeseen9991··on Denmark Offers to Buy U.S.
The article referenced literally says "SATIRE FROM THE BOROWITZ REPORT" in capital red letters right above the title.
unforeseen9991··on Ask HN: How to be less argumentative online?
I do the same thing a lot, I find it's often a case that I realize i'm just being a dick or have some sort of emotional reaction, some I realize I'm just adding nothing.

I do this far more often with e-mail, sometimes i'll be e-mailing my friend about something, and then all of a sudden go on a big tangent about a problem i'm having or facing and by the time I'm finished the e-mail it's a novel, but I fleshed out my problems and it helped me immensely. I just delete the e-mail at the end / send the one liner response I had in the first place.

Writing to someone else comes from a different perspective then just journaling for yourself.

unforeseen9991··on Ask HN: A colleague is leaving. How to investigate what went wrong?
The HR at my last job were so incompetent they tried reaching out to me (repeatedly) for a exit interview three weeks after I had already left.
unforeseen9991··on [dead]
I came here just to comment on how I think that is the worst news site I ever came across.

Finding the actual content in among that crap was terrible - it's almost as if they are trying to fail.

I couldn't imagine what it looks like without an ad blocker

unforeseen9991··on IRS budget cuts cost $34.3B in lost revenue from big business
Exactly, considering the penalties are just paying whatever is owed anyway, perhaps plus a few minor interest penalties. They make more the fines and interest combined by a long shot just by deploying the saved funds elsewhere.
unforeseen9991··on Todo.txt: Future-proof task tracking in a file you control
I've been using this for about a year now, and having tried out many many others over the last 20 years of IT and management. Taskwarrior was ideal when managing departments, as I was tracking 200-500 tasks at any given time.

Now that I no longer manage people or large projects this works excellent for me. I use todotxt.net for Windows, I forget what I was using when I used to use macOS, I think just vim. In windows if i'm doing some sort of batch operation I open it with notepad++ (I manage a someday.txt and horizon.txt to keep focused).

The android app is excellent, with quick widget shortcuts to add tasks, including a panel. I very often when browsing reddit, or whatever else, will "share" anything i'm interested in and then process and sort them later. Things without a context are considered my "inbox".

When I add a due date, the due date actually gets entered into my calendar as a reminder (This is EXCELLENT). Since everything is synced, it doesn't matter if I enter this from a text editor or not, the android app sees it and does the entry. I use dropbox for sync for now, which is not ideal, but I can't be bothered at the time to get my workflow setup on my sync app of choice.

unforeseen9991··on Ask HN: How can we destroy AMP?
I JUST ran into this. It's not good for tech searches for this very reason. I was trying to look up an issue with an application, and every link I clicked on was from 7 years ago.

I switched to google and instantly grabbed some ones from 2019

unforeseen9991··on Ask HN: What are good hosting providers?
Thanks, this was a great writeup with lots of benchmarks.
unforeseen9991··on Facebook Is Dying
Exactly, Casinos are successful in a business sense as well.

These companies get most of their profit from addicting people and keeping them addicted.

They have the same moral standing as a drug dealer.

Ear plugs are an option for that, although I wonder if you can feel the vibrations...

I recently stayed in a hotel that is right next to a very major highway, and they provided ear plugs for free.

unforeseen9991··on Ask HN: Why did your startup fail?
Depends on if you have team leads, that generally "manage and steer" with general autonomy of a larger manager or director. I'd say 10-15%, past that it's cruft.

The strength of the leadership and managers is really a key component of how much % is required.
