unfocso··on StreetComplete on iOS is now in public beta
It's a... mix. I can see all the shapes of the roads and areas i mapped in my area, but they seem not to trust OSM naming so they either have no name or the name TomTom gave to the equivalent street.

I can see most POIs i added with the exact name i gave to them, but the reviews and opening hours are pulled from Tripadvisor.

It's explicitly advertised for driving, not walking, so it's optimized to get you to places. CoMaps and even OSMand are much better for walking around.

And there's a simple reason for the search being so bad in most OSM apps: offline search.

The focus of all these apps seems to be a self-imposed "the app should never touch a server, ever, because what if the user is on a 100$/GB roaming plan in Africa", but indexing the maps is not easy.

I run a local Nominatim database (search engine for OSM) for Italy and it's ~57gb of data and indexes for one country only, and it barely supports fuzzy search.

Partly, with Organic Maps or CoMaps.

However, in my opinion TomTom (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tomtom.spe... or https://apps.apple.com/us/app/tomtom-maps-traffic/id14381065...) is still the best way to use OpenStreetMap for navigation since it combines OSM data with their own real time traffic information without dark patterns or asking for an account like Waze or Maps do.

unfocso··on Dutch governments builds alternative for Microsoft based on NixOS
I love the absolute fever dream that is looking at the pictures of patents. The out of context fig 9 is amazing
unfocso··on XCancel service is suspended until further notice
There's plenty of other instances running on nitter, some secret/invite only (and as such more chance to fly under the radar). The code is open source: https://github.com/zedeus/nitter albeit X DMCA'd the repo.

Njalla is not ICANN accredited, so they cannot register domains. They buy them and then lease them out to you.

The issue is, now they are the legal owners and liable for the content of the website, and they also support PayPal, which will absolutely drop them the moment they get sanctioned.

And yes, they could relocate to TOR, I2P, use P2P websites, torrents, and only accept cryptos for donations. But eventually you'll need to put down a credit card on file to buy a domain, and that domain needs to be owned by somebody.

>Why is the Italian government not protecting them?

The Italian police wiretapped them for one year without them knowing.

unfocso··on A/I shuts down
Really sad, and also a testament of the fact that as much as we think we try to be indipendent, eventually once somebody starts putting enough pressure on the people around you (and you turn from "a neutral customer" to "a liability") the path to isolation is very short.
unfocso··on Nitter and XCancel receive cease and desist notices
It depends on the tweet. I can browse many profiles of public figures just fine and open their tweets, but tweets from random people (especially if they include media) will bounce me back with a login wall. Remotely NSFW stuff is instant block.
unfocso··on Devices with GrapheneOS support should be available in 2027
Oh, that's unfortunate. I thought they meant support would be released in 2027, not that phones from 2027 would be supported only. :(
unfocso··on Devices with GrapheneOS support should be available in 2027
A year ago or so, the ThinkPhone 23 (Snapdragon 8, 2023, a weird "flagship") was available for 229€ new on various retail stores. The phone also supports Mobian/PostmarketOS and the bootloader is unlockable with no adverse effects.

Out of nowhere, it received (along with other older phones) updates up to Android 16.

I wouldn't be surprised if the "sudden" update was just a side effect of Motorola preparing for Graphene to be released on these older phones.

unfocso··on A third world engineer responds to “RISC-V: They should have known better”
Also note: LCSC sells PY32 Arm Cortex-M0 (PY32C642-C) for half the price (0.06$) of the cheapest CH32 [CH32V005D6U6] (0.11$). Given it has half the RAM, but price matching yields a better chip for less or the same money.

STMicroelectronics also launched the STM32C0 series that is still quite cheap @ ~0.35$/piece.

However, the prices on aliexpress all mishmash so giving a correct quote is impossible as the same chip is sold at wildly different prices by different sellers.

Refreshing style of writing. I know nothing about ISAs, but the rant was so fun

I wonder what kind of prompt they had to use to make a Readme that rude and unfunny
unfocso··on Generative "AI": The Guitar Hero of Creativity
This is a bad analogy by somebody who never played the game. Guitar hero is not harder or easier than guitar, it's just different.

I don't know how to play guitar, yet I can play guitar hero. My friend who plays guitar cannot play guitar hero. I'm not interested in playing guitar and I don't find GH to be a "shortcut" to learn it. In fact, I play the piano and I'm okay like that.

unfocso··on Xbox goes down. You can't play games you own on disc
The absurdity is that back in gen-7 we had everything figured out: PS3 used the (free) servers only for matchmaking and all online games were hosted on the consoles themselves. The matchmaking servers are still up and working, and everybody plays with better latency thanks to the prominence of fast fiber.

No internet? Games work offline and support LAN if you have a switch and a couple of consoles.

In 2026 I can still insert any used disc I bought in my ps3 and it will generate a (offline) client-side license for me and let me play and update the game with the disk inside just as a "proof" of still owning it.

If I'm online I'll get patches, else I'll just get served the version on the disc.

(Btw, ps3 also has a print spooler and can natively rip CDs and serve them while acting as a NAS. Or, you can stream games to your psp with remote play. It was truly a "let's cram everything we can inside" era and more like a proper pc with a mediacenter interface)

unfocso··on Detecting LLM-Generated Texts with "Classical" Machine Learning
I had done the same for classifying and generating bookmarks of thousands of datasheets, along with a very naive yolo-based classificator (to detect pages made out of diagrams and pictures mostly).

Done with GLM-OCR, I had to watch text sloooowly crawl out of the llm and still have to live with hallucinations and the model not following the schema

unfocso··on The <usermedia> HTML element
"Press here to view the content", there's already plenty in the wild that grant access to notifications with deceptive buttons.
unfocso··on Godot will no longer accept AI-authored code contributions
You "personally checked" the result (generated by an LLM, a huge black box with extensive knowledge of all fields) to the best of your knowledge. There is a mismatch between what the machine knows (and has done as the result of it) and what you think you know.

Implementing a fix implies knowledge of the inner workings that brought you to it. A fix made by a LLM does not give you that.

unfocso··on Looking Ahead to Postgres 19
Wow. Incredible how this was not mentioned in the OP. I had done it with tcn triggers and adding "_archive" shadown tables manually with tcn (https://www.postgresql.org/docs/current/tcn.html), but doing it natively is gonna be, as per most postgresql implementations, wonderful.
unfocso··on How to corrupt an SQLite database file
The whole sqlite documentation is full of gold gems and other curious documents mostly to appease bureocrats and big companies. It doubles as a fun read other than being incredibly useful.

See, for example: "Defense about the dark arts" (https://sqlite.org/security.Html) and "Why in C?" saying "Because C is best."

unfocso··on [dead]
Hello. Author here, I usually just lurk with no account. I wrote this post after fixing a machine that stopped working due to the SD degrading away. Last time it happened I had to redo everything from just carved data, so this time I tried to have fun and see how much i could salvage. There was a developer "backdoor" and weirdly aesthetic corruption that was too cool not to share
