unfitted2545··on Nine things I learned in ninety years
There is truth in saying working harder does seem to generate more luck, in so far as, if you lay in your room all day and did nothing, you won't be getting any luck.

It's just silly to paint yourself as this hard worker that got back what you put in, whilst ignoring the ills that you put in. I'm sure he did good stuff because of work he personally did, but it's laughable to think he could get to where he did, if he wasn't born into the planter class.

And no, that doesn't mean if you were culturally disadvantaged you couldn't do anything, it's just a lot harder and you had no free will in that. Every opportunity (and decision, really) is just a consequence of where and when you are, and should be taken not as a personal character assessment. I guess you could argue that means Jefferson is morally fine because that's just the kinda life he was born into so how would he know different, or maybe he just lacks some empathy :P

He sure was lucky to be white. Do you think he could have rolled the dice if he was shackled up?

A used iPod (probably flashed with the open source Rockbox firmware) for the cool factor and reducing ewaste. This is an amazing guide: https://yuuiko.github.io/iPodGuide/iPodGuidev2-1.pdf that gives recommendations on what model and the mods you can do. I have a 5.5 gen with an SD card mod all for £50.

Edit: Actually, I forgot the eBay listing said it was a 5.5 gen but the serial number when I got it was just 5th gen, and I got a full refund! £20 in total then.

I think I remember them saying the current target is 2026-2027 which is promising.

I wonder if it's because of social media creating deeper and deeper niche personality traits. Where it's simultaneously easy to find lots of people that share common likes/dislikes, but practically unobtainable to find that one human that shares all are likes/dislikes and be the that perfect friend. There's also so many things to like and dislike that maybe people don't even truly know what they like and dislike. Too many social interactions (and the culture of labelling everything, increasingly dividing us) have us burned out on making the deep connections. It's similar to this: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=25667362
unfitted2545··on New financed PostmarketOS project: wireplumber and callaudiod
With the recent Android announcement about developers needing ID to push apps, smart phones are all becoming walled gardens (with surveillance in the garden).

Have people tried pmOS (they port Linux to phones), or have any thoughts/opinions on the future of it? I saw recently a Xiaomi Pad 6 tablet runs quite well with it!

It degrades and oppresses all women.

Of course it depends on what you're playing, but VM gaming is not 100% compatible, lots of anti cheats will ban VM users and it's a cat and mouse game to not get detected.
unfitted2545··on I'm Done with Social Media
We have become less social as a result of social media, when I walk outside almost every single person has earbuds or headphones in, and people won't even look at me when I walk past, let alone say hi or anything. There's just too much going on, people are drained by these opaque algorithms that does not care about us, created by people who do not care about us.

How do LLM's assist us in this regard? It creates more content, but it's not even made by anyone, whilst guzzling up resources that we actually need (this applies to physical things like water as well as our own attention/time).

It feels like technology gets put out to the world and then humanity gets dragged "forward" by it, when there's nothing inherently wrong with resisting change if the current evidence points towards further problems.

This interview with Karen Hao is really good (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8enXRDlWguU), she interviews people that have had 1 on 1 meetings with Sam, and they always say he aligned with them on everything to the point where they don't actually know what he believes. He will tailor his opinions to try and weave in trust.

it mimics drug addiction, that same cycle can often happen with cannabis.

You can take the panpsychic view if you want (with no actual evidence), but it doesn't change the fact that we know non human animals suffer. Countlessly exploiting their entire population, for what?

> all the living things I eat deserve such respect and reverence

How does that help them when you're consuming their flesh without consent? Let's all fornicate with these animals, just make sure to show respect after!

I can kinda understand how factory farming is the bad bit as opposed to a traditional farming, but you have to stop and think, who are we to decide these other beings lives?

I do the exact same thing, and have the exact same result (my gf can't even tell it's on with her eyes closed). I use a Wurkkos HD15R, which according the manual uses a 660nm light (Luminus SST-20-DR-B120-V660), mainly got it for walking/camping but would recommend for any situation a light is needed.
