underseacables··on Ross Ulbricht granted a full pardon
I thought it was a ridiculously long sentence compared to what other people have received. 10 years was right. That's enough time. I know that he was accused of hiring a hitman, but he was never convicted of that. It should have never been used in his sentencing. I think the government tried to make an example out of Ross Ulbrich, and it was a miscarriage of justice.
underseacables··on Meta Censoring '#Democrat' on Instagram
This really just goes back to the fact that it's a private net work and they can do what they want. Even if it is censored, what can you do about?
underseacables··on Please don't force dark mode
Please I am begging you to force dark mode, or ask me up front which I prefer.
underseacables··on Book and Dagger: How scholars and librarians became spies during World War II
Maybe for some but not all. China absolutely threatens Chinese Americans and their families - remember the Chinese police department's in America - but not sure that it is everyone.
underseacables··on NY Assembly Bill: Criminal background checks for (nearly all) 3D printers
Drive to New Jersey
underseacables··on California's future depends on how leaders rebuild after the Los Angeles fires
Interesting Datapoint: the Camp Fire in 2019 completely destroyed the affluent town of Paradise California. Today it is only 30% recovered. Looking at some of the other data points around rebuilding in California, I don't think Los Angeles will recover from this at least a decade or more.
underseacables··on Calling women 'household objects' now permitted on Facebook
I just hope we can get past the era of people, and the media, being so outraged by everything.
underseacables··on How Saffron, a precious import, became an American cash crop
I'm surprised that, as the price increased, there has not been a mechanical automation found that would remove the labor requirement. Terrible for developing countries where labor is cheap and depends on that laborious task of harvesting threads.
underseacables··on How Saffron, a precious import, became an American cash crop
This is good! Price of saffron got really high there for a while and it really impacted specific dishes. I noticed this about 12 years ago, popular rice brands removed the word Saffron from the front of the packaging. It was replaced by "saffron seasoning" which was a blend of things. The taste changed because I felt it had less saffron, which I thought was due to higher prices.
underseacables··on Why was there a wall near runway at S Korea plane crash airport?
Something else that may be a factor, a lot of Asian carriers teach their pilots to use auto pilot for landing. American pilots almost universally SOP do not use auto pilot when landing. It's possible the South Korean pilot was using auto pilot to land, forced to do a go around, but wasn't in the habit of manually configuring the plane for landing. That's how the flaps and the gear were both missed. He assumed autopilot etc was handling that.

I think in the cockpit voice recording we are going to be hearing the sirens going off about no landing gear and those guys were just not paying attention.

underseacables··on Why was there a wall near runway at S Korea plane crash airport?
They did not bring the plane down safely! The pilot failed to lower the landing gear, or extend the flaps, both of which, for all intensive purposes were technologically possible. Multiple redundant systems for these. I think they completely lost situational awareness, and panicked.
underseacables··on I am rich and have no idea what to do
Start nonprofit businesses that hire, train, and support people with physical and developmental disabilities. For example, the Adelante of New Mexico. They create companies to provide jobs to people with disabilities. They also provide health insurance, a living wage, and housing assistance.

Make more companies like that. Put money to doing good, not just being good.

underseacables··on Tesla reports 1.1% sales drop for 2024, first annual decline in at least 9 years
IMHO: politics, and irritation at his personality and disruption. He has been the driver of some pretty amazing things, but that makes some people jealous or just bitter.
underseacables··on Tesla reports 1.1% sales drop for 2024, first annual decline in at least 9 years
But they have been doing it forever. Soros, Epstein, SBF, Bezos... Your ideal is noble but perhaps a little naive.
underseacables··on Where are Mr. Beast's early sponsors now?
I think the vast majority of ad spending goes into the furnace. Most people block it out, skip it, or ignore it. Unless it's really good, or unique, it is just universal noise now.
underseacables··on After 30 years, FDA overhauls guideline for the claim "healthy" on food packages
Maybe they will one day get around to deciding what constitutes a new dietary ingredient for dietary supplements, it's only been 30 years.
underseacables··on YouTuber won DMCA fight with fake Nintendo lawyer by detecting spoofed email
I think the only way YouTube is ever going to change its policy is if someone sues them and wins.
underseacables··on Ask HN: Are you unable to find employment?
I think companies do this deliberately to avoid hiring Americans. The entire H1-B scheme is a disaster.
underseacables··on The paper passport's days are numbered
I was so sad I did not get a stamp in my passport when I visited Australia. Everything is electronic
underseacables··on US shoots down two of its own Navy pilots over Red Sea
That is incredible. So low over the water, with missile inbound. Those aviators are lucky to be alive.

Last time an American war plane was shot down by a missile fired from the ship was in Vietnam!

underseacables··on Is stuff online worth saving?
I suppose it comes down to what the purpose of such archiving is.

I think it's the preservation of information, but I also believe 90% is absolutely pointless. There is just so much of it, and data storage so cheap, that it makes sense to just save everything.

underseacables··on AT&T user's erroneous $6,223 bill is reminder that AutoPay can wipe you out
Autopay accounts should always be separate. I opened a second checking account with my bank, and every month or so I make a deposit. That way if something like this happened it's not gonna get that much and its all separate
underseacables··on Hospitals gave patients meds during childbirth, then reported them for drug use
It feels like today, mothers face increasing danger going into hospitals. The medical professionals have so much power and control over you when you're there, and one mistake can kill you or ruin your life. There really needs to be greater patient protections.
underseacables··on Dickies moving its headquarters from Texas to California
The Dickies move will impact about 120 Fort Worth employees.
underseacables··on Top internet sleuths say they won't help find the UnitedHealthcare CEO killer
Good example, I was struggling to come up with other public indifference to killings. Maybe some mobsters?

What makes the UH CEO so different is that he was, presumably, innocent. A bad person for humanity and the public, Absolutely, but legally innocent.

underseacables··on Top internet sleuths say they won't help find the UnitedHealthcare CEO killer
Has there ever been another case like this? I remember some acts in the past where someone was murdered and the general public consensus (even juries) were like yeah, we'll allow it.

underseacables··on A federal policy change in the 1980s created the modern food desert
What about a zoning pair law requiring that before building a grocery store, the company must also build a store in a residential area that lacks one?

I think other factors are at play, namely crime, and the perception of crime. South Atlanta is a food desert yet a lot of people live there, people who can afford to buy at Aldi's and Lidl.

There is bias but I hesitate to name that bias because I think its a multitude of incorrect thinking.

underseacables··on New Zealand Navy ship sank off Samoa because autopilot was left on, inquiry
The article seems to go out of the way to not mention the captain or by name.
underseacables··on Kim Dotcom Suffers Stroke
I hope he's OK, what a rebel, all the way back to the Chaos computer club. It's been enjoyable watching him fight Hollywood.
