underpand··on MIT suspending SAT/ACT requirement for next application cycle
It's low compared to some base rates.

60% of 750 - 800 math SAT scorers are Asian

https://i0.wp.com/www.brookings.edu/wp-content/uploads/2017/...

I looked through the list of USAMO finalists in recent years and > 80% have Asian surnames.

> I would challenge if ACT/SAT is much about pure intellectual merit, considering how much one can boost their score with dedicated tutors and so on, but I digress. How to show intellectual merit other than standardized tests without relying on rich parents:

I don't think the difference between dedicated tutors and individual studying with Khan Academy is a large difference. The majority of low scorers score low because they're either lower on the intelligence scale or didn't spend time individually studying.

underpand··on MIT suspending SAT/ACT requirement for next application cycle
The Math SAT is mostly straight out of the standard math curriculum. The subject tests are similar.

This was downvoted because it's a disingenuous reply. Obviously, OP was not arguing that SAT can't be gamed.
underpand··on Female Founder Secrets: Fertility
This is a baseless generalization of men. Men are not an obstacle to a 32 hour work week.
underpand··on Female Founder Secrets: Fertility
This conversation seems to be geared towards upper middle class, dual income professionals that usually have $150,000+ household income. It's difficult for me to sympathize and see these issues as more than entitlement.

First, since household income is a combination of the mother and father's incomes, women still have the same household income and spending power as men. The remaining complaint is worse work fulfillment for women. I don't think people are entitled to work fulfillment. It's a minor issue in my eyes. There are advantages and drawbacks to this issue. While mothers have a more difficult time with work fulfillment and climbing the corporate ladder, mothers also have an easier time avoiding the corporate environment and work pressure. Women who don't find fulfillment at work can more easily not work than the equivalent men.

Second, ignoring gender and seeing this from a gender-neutral parent perspective, many of these upper middle class parents are lamenting the tradeoff between living an upper middle class lifestyle and being parents. I don't think there is a problem when upper middle class parents have to downgrade their living standards when becoming parents. I don't think people are entitled to an upper middle class lifestyle.

underpand··on Female Founder Secrets: Fertility
> Why ask these questions only as they relate to women and motherhood? Why haven't men being presented a false promise that value and purpose is derived from work?

Men aren't presented with this false promise. Men are influenced to work through negative reinforcement. A man who doesn't have a career is judged harshly, much more so than women, by society and has a difficult time dating and finding a partner.

Men also have a higher economic need to work. Women have much higher social mobility, so women are less economically motivated to work. A low income man will stay poor unless he works himself out of his social class. A low income woman can much more easily marry a man with higher income than her to propel her social class and household income up.

Women are more often presented with the positive reinforcement of value and purpose from work because women deal with less negative reinforcement when not working.

I'm disappointed that they didn't look at the very obvious input into insurance risk models: crime rate.

It's very dishonest since it's very obvious. Either complete incompetence or dishonesty.

underpand··on MIT to no longer consider SAT subject tests in admissions decisions
GPA is already scaled based on income because poor schools give higher GPAs for the same level of knowledge and skill. The study is useless.

> And those expensive prep courses had the potential to increase scores over 100 points.

As compared with self-studying with free online practice tests and resources having the potential to increase scores over 100 points.

underpand··on MIT to no longer consider SAT subject tests in admissions decisions
It's hard enough such that schools have to lower their SAT standards to accept underrepresented minorities.

Otherwise, for non-URMs, the top schools do agree with you. SAT (and school GPA) are usually used in threshold-y way with other factors mattering more.

underpand··on Carrier sales of phone-location data is illegal, FCC plans punishment
Do banks actually buy location data from carriers?
underpand··on Carrier sales of phone-location data is illegal, FCC plans punishment
Yes, there are a lot of malicious actors that actually sell data (apps, browser extensions, phone carriers, potentially ISPs, finance companies, etc.). Many of these actors even sell un-anonymized data. The big tech companies are very low on the totem pole of badness and will continue to stay that way for a long time because the incentives don't align for them to actually sell data.
underpand··on Coding Interview Problems with Detailed Solutions, Test Cases, Program Analysis
Wouldn't you want people who care enough about their career to cram? That itself is a good signal. Cramming algorithms problems is difficult and succeeding shows grit. It also selects against sociopaths who BS their way through subjective personality interviews.
underpand··on Black boys don’t need more discipline, they need mentors (2018)
That comes with some trade-offs.

1. Having a spouse who does not have the cultural knowledge, similar interests, empathy or language skills to communicate with your family is an issue. Her choice to date a white man is in a sense a rejection of her own family.

2. She herself may not have the same experiences, mindsets and interests to be able to really connect with her spouse if the relationship is driven by her attempt to run away from the expectations of her family.

3. A white man and his family/friends have a higher chance of being racist and insensitive to race issues. Weirdly enough, it does not seem like racist beliefs and white supremacy preclude white men from dating Asian women or Asian women from reciprocating interest: https://www.nytimes.com/2018/01/06/opinion/sunday/alt-right-...

Counter example: Latino men tend to be short and date out at a similar rate to Latina women.
underpand··on Black boys don’t need more discipline, they need mentors (2018)
It depends on the reason for the preference. If it's status or racial inferiority based (with the potential, unpleasant addition of fetishism and white superiority complex from her partner's side), Asian women and their partners suffer. All that weirdness would make a healthy relationship difficult.

Asian women suffer from 3 main problems.

1. If other Asian women are desperate to white men because of racial inferiority, many white men will develop the idea that Asian women are desperate, think that they are superior for being white and treat Asian women poorly. Asian women would also have lower boundaries and would tolerate more misbehavior from white men that other women would not due to the inferiority.

2. People in general seek commonality in relationships. Some Asian women who are severely affected by an inferiority complex may sub-optimally choose unwoke partners that they have little in common with. The lower commonality and inferiority also bias Asian women's partners and the partners' friends and family toward being less accepting of diversity than the average interacial relationship. e.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PAJAVHzBsAg

3. If she does have an racial inferiority complex, then chasing white men would confirm and strengthen her racial inferiority complex and cause additional suffering.

Having established that some forms of that type of relationship can be harmful, the question to answer then is: how prevalent are racial inferiority and status/acceptance seeking from the Asian women and fetishism and white superiority complex from the white men in these relationships?

underpand··on Ask HN: Are books worth it?
Some positives of books:

Books are widely vetted but it is difficult to find quality online content. Books work your long form attention but much online content is self contained and shallow.

underpand··on Is Fry’s Electronics in trouble?
Yeah, I was amazed when I went to Microcenter recently. I had the impression of them as a discount Circuit City/Best Buy from the late 90s and early 2000s. The workers were more knowledgeable than the competition (basically just Staples, Office Depot, Walmart, Target and Best Buy at this point). The guy in charge of the computer hardware section really knew his stuff and was helpful.

underpand··on New approaches shed light on the magnitude of sex differences in personality
> This has been used to deny women entrance to universities, to take out loans, to own property, vote, participate in politics, make laws, start companies, become scientists and doctors, run marathons, and make many substantial decisions about their lives. If these differences weren't historically used as justification to deny people the ability to have control over their lives, then yes it would be easier to talk about them.

Correct me if I'm wrong but a majority of men throughout history did not have many rights either. 'Rights' were enjoyed by a few male aristocrats. History is written and perpetuated by the aristocrats. Note that rights were not that important for life quality for commoners in the past when people were struggling through wars, famine and lack of basic technology.

Men also have had massive disadvantages because of the differences. Compared to female 'disadvantages', male disadvantages had higher impact on life quality and were less likely to have an intersection with commoners of the other gender. The male disadvantages being: dangerous physical labor jobs, participating in wars, less likely to start a family, forced to be the breadwinner and work at remote places away from family.

> At the end of the day, is all this measuring anything other than trends in filling up questionnaires?

I get that sense that this makes up a bulk of social science research. This would be a criticism of the field as a whole.

I'm curious how this study compares to the average research coming from social sciences which seems to be generally accepted as valid.
