unao··on Who is horse_js?
The article was quite enjoyable to read though full of MS marketing.

When saw the part with Azure Cognitive Services Text Analytics - I burst out laughing. Earlier, they quoted: Half of the time when companies say they need "AI" what they really need is a SELECT clause with GROUP BY.

Their motivation of using AI is even below that threshold.

Now awaiting some horse_js comment about this absurdity.

Very impressive end enlightening indeed.

SmarterEveryDay published a video on this topic few weeks back: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ds0cmAV-Yek

unao··on Show HN: Open source JavaScript library to record and replay the web
really nice!

Few years ago, I created something very similar when working for validately.com - user testing company. The solution was tailored for our needs and was quite unique and rather sophisticated.

Below few main points:

- automatic injection of recording script by proxing original site / app via our domain (optionally user's could have inject the script by themselves)

- using iframe to serve the recorded page in order to preserve context and allow to display content on top of the page

- audio recording

- broadcasting in real-time

- storing all assets from a recording (images / stylesheets) to make playing back independent from original urls

Not everything was perfect and there were always something to improve. Some sites did not work at all due to technical limitations. But the technology was good enough so the company could grow and transit to webrtc based solution.

I am very grateful for this rare opportunity as the project taught me insane amount of useful stuff. Would love to work on something similar again.

unao··on Counting the Components of My Consciousness
Very interesting read indeed.

Not sure if observer is needed at all to have efficiently functioning system, though. Rather contrary: it _feels_ the impact of the observer on external world or even internal states is at most very limited, if not totally negligible.

Not sure as well if observer goes away in case of sleep or anesthesia. Maybe, just maybe the subcomponent responsible for forming memories is shut down and therefore there are no memories from that period. The observer could be still present, patiently observing the _void_ and/or snoring and/or _anything else_.

unao··on Physicist Leon Lederman died age 96 selling his Nobel Prize to pay medical costs
Back in 1998, I was 13. For some longer period (at least 8 weeks) I was in a very low mood - sort of existential crisis. By self-diagnosis, I would call it a (mild?) form of depression. When in bookstore my parents asked me to choose a book for myself and ended up with Polish edition of 'God Particle'. Not sure but probably I was more interested in the _god_ aspect than _particle_. Till today I remember some parts of the book quite well. Reading the book gave me a lot of hope and - very likely - directly triggered some recovery processes, which took another 3-5 months btw. I definitely would be a totally different person if - for longer time - spiralling down the dark thoughts rabbit hole.

Just now I realised, I wish Dr Lederman knew this story. Too late, unfortunately.

Hmm, that is interesting. Let me cite a book Geometric Algebra for Computer Science:

To understand the structure of the book, you need a better feeling for what geometric algebra is, and how it relates to more classical techniques such as linear algebra.

I followed first chapters of this book and it does not require any knowledge of Linear Algebra.

The formalism is pretty hard to grasp indeed, but I guess it concerns any mathematical theory. From what I know Exterior / Geometric Algebra is much simpler and more intuitive than let say Linear Algebra.

You are most likely right, but it is still kind of a niche. If you take a look at curriculum of Computer Science studies it is pretty non-present. From what I know Exterior / Geometric Algebra is superior in many ways to Linear Algebra: first it is backwards compatible and second (apparently) it is much more intuitive. But still Linear Algebra is pretty standard.

The neglect of the exterior algebra is the mathematical tragedy of our century.

Why has it been neglected?

unao··on A Bigger Mathematical Picture for Computer Graphics [video]
I encountered geometric algebra only few weeks ago and it is one of the most interesting, intriguing and elegant things I saw in my life. It almost feels too beauty to be true. I cannot understand why GA is not more popular - especially as it is backwards compatible with linear algebra.

There is very interesting library: https://github.com/enkimute/ganja.js
