umichguy··on US Army scraps $1B Iron Dome project after Israel refuses to provide source code
My bad - got it mixed up.
umichguy··on US Army scraps $1B Iron Dome project after Israel refuses to provide source code
Take the case of F-35, the only country which has source codes apart from the U.S. is the UK. A very special exemption. They are also the only Tier 2 partner.

Everybody else has basically a black box of code given to them in terms of code for the aircraft.

umichguy··on When did Americans lose their British accents?
American newscasters and classic film stars sported an accent half in between the U.S.- UK accents, also called as Transatlantic accent.

Look back at old films even as late the end of 60s and you wil hear it.

umichguy··on Banks to sell first post-crisis managed synthetic CDO
Reminds me of all the scenes from the movie "The Big Short."
umichguy··on Airbus will stop building the A380 in 2021
When it was conceived, it was the right aircraft. By the time it arrived, market conditions changed. So it became the wrong plane.

That's really to it. Really.

umichguy··on Article 13 Is Back On: Worse, Not Better
Unfortunately with the chaos with the UK and it likely crashing out, there will be a less of vocal opposition. Though, ironically, the UK itself right now can't seem to make up its own mind up about anything.
umichguy··on SoftBank Finds Limits to Its Love for WeWork as Investors Push Back
Probably should replace the word Arab with Middle Eastern in the OP's title.
umichguy··on Google announces major expansion in New York City
You guys drink/ booze like it's going out of fashion. Must be all those cold long Wisconsin winters. Madison is an OK place in summer, but not a place I would like to live in. And this coming from a guy who grew up in Michigan. I prefer Ann Arbor for that reason.

Wisc-Madison has a great reputation for mech/industrial/ops types of degrees.

umichguy··on Pixel 3 call quality issues
Apparently, they do. How quaint.
umichguy··on The cold start problem: how to build your machine learning portfolio
I totally agree with your point. But unfortunately/ fortunately, those other fields you mention do require a degree as a minimum. But again, they also tend to have larger consequences (usually), compared to a few bad lines of code (usually).
umichguy··on On Shutting Down
There's probably a template which rearranges the words a bit and fills in your company specific info. It's going to be aahmazing!
umichguy··on EU Copyright: Block Everything, Never Make Mistakes, but Don't Use Upload Filter
You will find that the Swiss comply with most EU laws, including GDPR in most instances. And so is/has/will the UK. You really can't sit next to one of the largest trading blocs in the world and ignore it, unless you don't intend to do deal with them/ conduct business with them in any shape or form. Good luck in your quest to find, freedom or whatever else you're trying to find.
umichguy··on EU Copyright: Block Everything, Never Make Mistakes, but Don't Use Upload Filter
Kia ora! The "issue" here is that most sites which want to cater to worldwide audiences pretty much try to comply with influential legislation to stay on the good side. And GDPR/EU regs wield a big enough stick and come from a large enough region that you can't ignore them unless you want to block your site out completely to traffic coming from the EU. So they try and just do a worldwide rollout, irrespective of where you live. Of course, you can always implement this selectively but maybe more tricky to small and medium businesses, so they play and safe. Probably. I am speculating here.
umichguy··on The cold start problem: how to build your machine learning portfolio
Wasn't this tried/mooted a few years ago but got nowhere in the end? But you also have to understand that for many/most of these types of professional bodies in other fields, you need to have a basic BS type degree to be accredited and this is where I think it fell down flat as quite a few SWEs (compared to other fields) were self-taught, dropped out etc. and didn't necessarily have a college degree. Maybe they can have a different set of criteria for SW field.
umichguy··on “Write Drunk, Edit Sober” Is Bad Advice
Same here. I sometimes have a glass of wine or beer while working with some music on and zone out and get some proper work done. Maybe it calms down my hyperactive brain a bit - I did have ADHD as a kid and used to take meds.

Of course, there is a fine line between having a couple to calm down and getting drunk, when you don't get stuff done.

umichguy··on Ask HN: As programmers, why are we still going to the office?
So true. At my last job, one of my managers used to complain that he wasn't "seeing" more of his people in the office. Never mind the fact that the stuff actually got done on time and under budget. He had a wife and 3 kids at home and office was his "refuge," and came into the office every single day. So, he wanted people around him.

He was also a smooth-talking backstabbing insert choice curse word here. But that's a story for another day.

umichguy··on Ask HN: As programmers, why are we still going to the office?
Same here, I enjoy seeing my colleagues as well. But I prefer something like 2/3 days in the office and rest from home. This arrangement works better for me, covers all my needs/preferences.
umichguy··on Six Detroit area doctors indicted in $500M health care fraud
I went to West Bloomfield high and lived in the area for while. And agree with you.
umichguy··on O2 outage due to expired Ericsson certificate
They are a bunch of O2 thieves.
umichguy··on Send Noncompete Agreements Back to the Middle Ages
It should be "Land of the Free"

- terms and conditions apply

umichguy··on Internal Tensions at Facebook Are Boiling Over
Don't know why you would want to do that on your personal phone. I ain't reading any work stuff on my personal phone, even if they are willing to pay for it. Let them give me a work phone if they think it's important that I have access to work stuff on the go, outside the office.
umichguy··on Firefox desktop market share now below 9%
I was a dedicated user of FF since 2005/6 till about a year ago. I don't why I switched to Chrome, but since then haven't touched FF.

I need an app like Fox Clocks, which worked in FF only for a long time, but now is available on Chrome too.

umichguy··on Amazon's cloud business is competing with its own customers
I doubt McDs has the worst burgers but I get your point. The pros of McDs, you go anywhere in the world, you can expect reasonable quality, the familiarity of the brand/ products at reasonable prices. They won't be the best or the worst but do the job.
umichguy··on Source: Google Hangouts for consumers will be shutting down sometime in 2020
"Google is unfortunately a really solidly built ship"

Why is this unfortunate? Isn't this a byproduct of their success they've had over the years? Sure, they haven't had many blowout successes in recent time, but still.

umichguy··on Starting a Business in Silicon Valley
Maintaining/ fixing old banking SW.
umichguy··on South Koreans lock themselves up to escape prison of daily life
Or at an Ashram somewhere. There's probably lot better alternatives to prison, just to get "away from it all." Plus, in places like these, you can do some good via service to others.

/a cousin of mine who has a fancy PhD from Stanford left his $$$ job in AI research back in the mid-00s to go and live in a couple of ashrams and monasteries in India, Sri Lanka and Thailand. Still lives there, haven't spoken to him in a decade.

umichguy··on Helsinki to Begin Anonymous Recruiting
The UK Civil Service already does this. They ask you to remove all PII, school/ university names. That said you can leave your previous employer names in it.

They call it "name-blind" recruitment.

umichguy··on I still miss my headphone jack, and I want it back
Samsung does water resistant phone with their flagship S9. And they still have the 3.5.
umichguy··on I still miss my headphone jack, and I want it back
The thing is we shouldn't have to do this. The beauty of the 3.5 was the fact that you could've gone to pretty much any remote corner of the earth and you probably could've access to one if you lost yours.
umichguy··on The Shinkansen Story [video]
My take on HSR preferences, based on what I've personally experienced:

Japan=>Other Asian systems (Korea, China)> Europe (Italy, France, Germany, Spain) >>>U.S (Acela)

I am talking about the whole system, not just trains or ticketing or something specific.

Haven't been in any other countries' HSRs, so don't know.
