umeshunni··on Meta's memo to employees rolling back DEI programs
And then people wonder why Asians are overrepresented in high-paying careers in the US. Surely, it might be because of lack of DEI programs.

umeshunni··on 30% drop in O1-preview accuracy when Putnam problems are slightly variated
https://openreview.net/forum?id=YHWXlESeS8

Our evaluation on various open-source and proprietary models reveals that the highest performance, even after using techniques like self-consistency, self-refinement and chain-of-thought prompting, is less than 40%. The typical failure modes of GPT-4, the best model, are errors in algebraic manipulation, difficulty in grounding abstract concepts into mathematical equations accurately and failure in retrieving relevant domain-specific concepts.

I'm curious how something like O1 would perform now.

Super interesting in that

1. In theory these kind of connections should be something that LLMs are great at doing. 2. It appears that LLMs are not trained (yet?) on cursive and other non-print text

That's some serious leaps of logic there.
umeshunni··on OpenAI’s board, paraphrased: ‘All we need is unimaginable sums of money’
You could have said the same about Netscape in 1997. Noone knew what IE was (and if they did, thought it was inferior) and no one certainly knew what Chrome was (didn't exist). Yet, the browser market eventually didn't matter, got commoditized and what mattered were the applications built on top of it.

Painting a satellite black wouldn't solve the problem that they would still block the stars behind them when passing overhead. Instead of light streaks, you now have dark streaks across a region of the sky.
umeshunni··on The Rise and Fall of Ashton-Tate (2023)
Yeah - people basically had entire applications written in Access - think very simple point-of-sale systems, record keeping tools etc. The downside of course, is that, it ran on a single computer and there wasn't a concept of multi-user systems (or maybe there was and I just wasn't aware of it).

In some ways, it's a hark back to the day of a really 'thick' client that was a server, middleware and client all in one.
