ul5255··on Mesh LLM: distributed AI computing on iroh
I’m staring at this comment for a while now: With 3ms latency combined per token, wouldn’t that mean (1 / latency) = 333 token/s for the theoretical upper bound? I’m not trying to nitpick, just curious if I misunderstand something.
ul5255··on NanoTDB – Golang Append-Only Time Series DB
I have several years worth of timestamped sensor data in a SQlite DB that is 12+GB and growing. One idea was to experiment with DuckDB. Your comment about DuckDB has me worried as time ranged queries are common. Any link for me to dig deeper?

ul5255··on Spain and Portugal power outage: what caused it, and was there a cyber-attack?
I agree and I still see people speculating over the cause of the outage in this very thread, showing a worrying degree of confidence that for example renewable energies played a negative role
ul5255··on Show HN: Extend Zigbee sensor range with LoRaWAN
thanks a lot. I am looking for the longest time to get temperature sensors for the various radiators of our house's heating system (temperature of pipes entering/leaving each radiator plus room temperature, wall temperature). I found no suitable ready-made Zigbee sensors and developing my own seemed like a daunting task. Your setup looks like a very realistic option for my project.
ul5255··on Show HN: Extend Zigbee sensor range with LoRaWAN
Could you please expand a little on the setup of a hub/gateway in your project? I found the Arduino sketches for three sensors but it was not clear to me how one would go about the gateway those sensors would connect to.

every day usage: If you also have a PV system you can decide when to run the dish washer, laundry machine, dryer, ... and how many of these "bursty" appliances can possibly run in parallel w/o consuming energy from the grid

analysis/optimize energy consumption, e.g.:

* we moved the freezer from the kitchen to the basement instead of buying a more energy efficient new one

* the pump in our (20yrs old) heating system constantly uses 60W -> the whole furnace is now due for replacement

* determine your electricity base load in order to make an informed decision about the capacity of a battery system that buffers energy demand during the times the PV system does not supply energy

I'd say the real value is in looking into long term patterns (no ML needed).

The last part of your reply is especially important: East Germany is most likely the blue print of what will happen to the southern portions of the European Union. I am surprized this is not discussed more widely. Deindustrialization with most of the educated young generation moving away. This trend is hard to reverse.
ul5255··on Show HN: A virtual whiteboard for working or teaching remotely
Looking at all the feature requests here I can't help but think that you guys are reinventing TeamSpeak. The only difference I see is that with TeamSpeak you first must install a client whereas this runs in a browser.
ul5255··on Turning the Raspberry Pi Into an FM Transmitter
I fail to see how a dummy load and a SWR meter will help to make sure you don't disturb other (portions of) RF band(s). To assess this you must look into the spectral purity of your signal. You do this with a spectrum analyzer (or equivalent). The SA is already 50 Ohms terminated so you at most need attenuators for your transmitter. The SWR meter will tell you if your transmitter is matched to your antenna. If not you might kill the final stage of your transmitter. SWR doesn't tell you something about radiating unwanted frequencies.
ul5255··on Tcl the misunderstood (2006)
I am working on a Tcl parser implemented in Python as a side project. Feel free to use it on your code base:

ul5255··on Tcl the misunderstood (2006)
To my best knowledge, the hash mark comments are parsed as comments by the Tcl parser. The interpreter will not execute a "hash mark" procedure. You can check for the parsing and semantics of Tcl by googling for "Tcl dodekalogue".

ul5255··on Python Web Frameworks' Complexity
Slightly off-topic but why would you build up a dictionary in h(), then index it, then call the function being returned? The dictionary must be garbage collected later too. To me this seems rather inefficient compared to a simple if/then/else. I think readability also suffers.

ul5255··on Why I'm a Pirate
Good point. It is strange to read how people try to justify copying music/movies/... if they never had the intention to buy it in the first place. I do have sympathy for to circumvent DRM, ... e.g. to watch a DVD of region x (which I bought) on a player of region y. I don't have any sympathy for people who steal while I pay for the same thing.

ul5255··on Silly Python riddle
Ahh, thanks!
ul5255··on Silly Python riddle
Strange. With Python 2.6 I get [None, 7] while with Python 2.7 it is [None]. Looking at the OP codes the 2.7 one's look weird.

Python 2.6:

  >>> dis.dis(f)
    1           0 LOAD_GLOBAL              0 (g)
                3 LOAD_CONST               0 (None)
                6 YIELD_VALUE
                7 CALL_FUNCTION            1
               10 RETURN_VALUE
Python 2.7:

  >>> dis.dis(f)
    1           0 LOAD_GLOBAL              0 (g)
                3 LOAD_CONST               0 (None)
                6 YIELD_VALUE
                7 CALL_FUNCTION            1
               10 POP_TOP
               11 LOAD_CONST               0 (None)
               14 RETURN_VALUE
In essence the Python 2.7 compiler decides to throw away the result of the g() function call and replaces it with None. Does anyone understand why?
ul5255··on Silly Python riddle
minor nit: it will not even reach the yield expression because it fails to resolve g:

  >>> import dis
  >>> f = lambda: g((yield))
  >>> dis.dis(f)
    1           0 LOAD_GLOBAL              0 (g)
                3 LOAD_CONST               0 (None)
                6 YIELD_VALUE
                7 CALL_FUNCTION            1
               10 RETURN_VALUE
  >>>
ul5255··on Silly Python riddle
Whatever goes inside a lambda must be an expression. The parentheses around yield make it a yield expression. Otherwise yield would be a statement which is a different thing as far as Python is concerned.

You can also use it inside generators:

  >>> def f():
         while True:
             xyz = (yield)
             print xyz
  >>> g = f()
  >>> g.next()
  # nothing happens as xyz == None
  >>> g.send('huhu')
  huhu
