They also have the Gates Foundation backing. If it is a shiny AI tech that could help lots of people, then the money is there

An example of US VCs squandering on scooter startups is bike sharing in China?

Squandered is a bit harsh. I don't have skin in the game either way, but I wouldn't be surprised if there is a profitable business to be built once the dust settles. It can be hard to know in advance just how big that market would be, and how defensible.

We tried cognito (bizarrely hard to use), Auth0 (mildly hard to use), and Userfront (easy to use) for authentication + rbac + multi-tenancy. We also looked at Warrant and Oso, and my takeaway was that they shine for more complex use cases, which wasn't our particular need.

> The US was created by its citizens.

I'm a US citizen, and I love the US and benefit from it, but I certainly didn't create it. That happened long before me -- I just lucked into it.

I don't think you're being sarcastic, but this is where web applications are already. You can do this with the browser as the sandbox.

It's very widely used. Most SSO providers are using it, including the biggest ones.

We did the same and it has been great. Their MFA beta is so much simpler too. I do wish they were easier to find...

DOS = denial of service

Thank you for building it! I haven't kicked the tires yet, but as a node developer, this feels like the future: we can move fast with node when it makes sense, and get rust level performance when we need to. Best of both worlds!

Not trolling, just very frustrated. But yes a valuable lesson.

Yes, it is our fault for believing Netlify had contingency plans as hosting is their core business. We're fixing this mistake now so that our customers don't have the same experience.

We use(d) Netlify for the frontend. I agree, our mistake was believing Netlify could be used for more than toy websites and took care of backup plans for us. Clearly they do not.

Honestly, "not taking advantage of our DNS management" is a garbage response. We use AWS for our DNS management. If you offer a configuration, you should support it fully.

Our sites have been down for 3 hours now, and you're blaming someone else? We have 5 properties on Netlify now and will have 0 this time next week.

We're in the same boat, and when Netlify blames an "upstream provider", what I hear is that they don't have a backup plan.

They're giving us plenty of time to research alternatives while our site is down though.

Just wait until you find Userfront, which does the same thing for free until 10k users

I was curious so looked up "all mouth and no trousers". It's corrupted from the expression "all mouth and trousers", and means the same thing!

Amazon (and all the others you've mentioned) have the ability to choose their suppliers. There isn't piss in the Gatorade nor nails in the M&Ms because this is a solved problem: make companies liable for their supply chains.

This would make the payers far less likely to report it, and ultimately make it much harder to track

If you're considering a really low price point like $5/mo, you might be better suited charging businesses more and then having a free tier that's restricted to personal use in some way (e.g. license or no collaboration)

There are a LOT of businesses running on thin margins and making just enough to cover costs each month. Even one month of things going to zero will ruin a whole host of restaurants, sole proprietors, real estate speculators, and on down the chain. I hope I'm wrong, but this kind of instant systematic reduction in the economy feels unprecedented within the last 50+ years.

I'm always amazed at how few people have read The Making of the Atomic Bomb by Richard Rhodes.

It covers the physics, politics, motivation, cultural implications, and so much more. It's one of those books where being extremely long is a feature because it's unbelievably interesting. I highly recommend it.

What is your top priority coming in, and how will you evaluate whether you're succeeding?

What was it?

Built-in audience of readers

Good to know, and so sounds like there is reason to be cynical after all.

I understand the cynicism, but for now at least this is not affecting pricing (which is still based on subscribers [0]).

Seems like it's more about finding ways to target users who have unsubscribed from a mailing list. That has its own thorns, but a sly price hike doesn't appear to be one of them so far.

> maybe the Boeing board would hand them over willingly

This is not something the board can do

> He would be offline for a month and would need other mods to cover for him. To ask for help, he had to out himself as a kid.

I wonder to what extent the alt-right actually is a young teen movement, with adults mixed in (being the ones who show in person). Is there any at least semi-reliable data on this?
