What about the current situation, where serious API payers are increasingly OK with using open-weight models running on US providers?

uhfraid··on Why isn't the U.S. better at soccer?
As for how these requirements were determined… no clue. Never received an answer. Jury’s still out on that…

uhfraid··on Why isn't the U.S. better at soccer?
some good points such as lack of promotion/relegation but ultimately misses the root cause

Requirements to forming a division 1 league, as determined by the ‘US Soccer Professional League Standards’:

- minimum 12 teams (14 by year 3)

- each team’s principal owner has individual net worth of $40M

- 75% of teams located within major metro markets (at least 1M people)

- 15,000 seat stadium (and enclosed)

- teams located in each of the Eastern, Central and Pacific time zones

What the hell is going on at Microsoft?

uhfraid··on Ask HN: What is it like being in a CS major program these days?
Don’t be discouraged. The work that you enjoy doing is still here, and will still be here after you’ve graduated.

My best advice to you would be to learn CS the hard way (without AI).

Ignore the “AI learning tools” see on HN or mentioned by peers. Learning should be challenging so if it feels like a shortcut, it probably is. Don’t fall into that trap and you’ll be a more competent developer as a result, both with and without AI

uhfraid··on AI-generated art can’t be copyrighted after Supreme Court declines review
Yep. Not just copyright but patents as well

> The Supreme Court previously rejected Thaler's request to hear his argument in a separate case involving prototypes for a beverage holder and a light beacon concerning whether AI-generated inventions should be eligible for U.S. patent protection. His patent applications were rejected by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on similar grounds.

uhfraid··on Ask HN: Are diffs still useful for AI-assisted code changes?
Whether you or someone/something else wrote it is irrelevant

You’re expected to have self-reviewed and understand the changes made before requesting review. You must to be able to answer questions reviewers have about it. Someone must read the code. If not, why require a human review at all?

Not meeting this expectation = user ban in both kernel and chromium

uhfraid··on PCs refuse to shut down after Microsoft patch
Microsoft isn’t going to declare death of the PC and pivot to “cloud computers”/virtual desktops (again) just because of temporary RAM/SSD supply shortages lol

> And Amazon CEO just said it out loud about cloud computers.

And Google said Stadia would have “negative latency”

uhfraid··on Claude Cowork exfiltrates files

uhfraid··on CLI agents make self-hosting on a home server easier and fun
During winter outages, do you stick to the heat pump or switch to a backup heat (e.g. furnace)?

I regrettably removed our old furnace/tank when installing the air source heat pump we have now (northeast), but that’s been my biggest concern power wise

uhfraid··on CLI agents make self-hosting on a home server easier and fun
> My spouse and I work at home and after the first couple multi-day power outages we invested in good UPSs and a whole house standby generator.

What setup did you go with for whole house backup power?
