udfalkso··on Soundproofing for New York Noise
Also a side sleeper with the same issues.

I tried two pairs of these Radians and couldn't get them to work well. They don't form a proper seal I think, not exactly sure. Def. not as effective as normal ear plugs when it comes to blocking out sound for me. I'm not sure if I did something wrong during the molding process or my ear shape is somehow incompatible with them but I did carefully try twice to no avail.

Any tips?

udfalkso··on The Web We Have to Save
There's similar behavior today with the Bitcoin network. People are guided by community norms alone to stop doing things that are destructive in the short term but with which there's nothing theoretically wrong (e.g. Tons of tiny transactions). As the network overcomes the technical limitations, people will start to do those currently problematic things again without the need to use the work-arounds they're currently resorting to.
udfalkso··on Show HN: CSS Quality Guide
Great guide. I'd suggesting adding a bit more about the "why?" if the goal is compliance. In some cases, there are performance benefits to the stated approach (like not deeply nesting classes or avoiding tag based selectors) but some readers may not be aware of this and may assume that it's entirely a style based preference which is easier to ignore due to personal preference.

Another handy trick: Drag the icon next to the Finder title into any open terminal window and it will place the full path at the prompt.

Yes, you're right. I wrote without having actually tried it. It works nicely. Thanks
udfalkso··on Show HN: PixelTool – a tool for overlaying designs for pixel perfect front-end
Nice idea. Perhaps you could add a scale slider in addition to opacity. I know that in my case I’m delivered designs at 2x resolution and would have to view them at 50% size in order for it all to match up. Thanks
udfalkso··on Show HN: Timelinee – Simple timeline creation, my Labor Day weekend project
Anyone who finds this interesting may want to check out a fun movie timeline creator that I helped work on recently. It has a pretty powerful data-driven approach that builds the timeline skeleton for you and then makes it easy to edit and add media from there. Could work on top of any type of data.

This is neat, thanks. It would be better if the progress bar actually showed progress. A simple loading spinner gif would be better if that's all the progress bar really is in this case. I ran this on my phone earlier and wasn't sure if anything was actually happening because it took too long, and I gave up.

udfalkso··on The way we board airplanes
Same here. Def. the way to go.

It's hard to wait long enough though. They start with "final, final, final boarding calls" prematurely and you still end up waiting in line for 5-10 minutes in the gateway even if you're the very last person to check in. I'd still prefer to stand for a few minutes than spend extra time crammed into that awful seat.

udfalkso··on What if you didn't need money or attention?
Good advice thanks. I think the biggest fear they have is that they think other people will get jealous or ask for the same offer and it will spiral out of control. So, perhaps this works best if you work remotely, or if you try it with a very small company.
udfalkso··on What if you didn't need money or attention?
How about zero vacation time, and I keep the full healthcare? Or yeah, pay me 3/5 the healthcare, that's also reasonable. I'm sure this pice of the puzzle could be negotiated in each case.
udfalkso··on What if you didn't need money or attention?
A few years ago I decided that I wanted more free time to work on side projects, travel, whatever, and I made what I thought was a rather reasonable offer to my current employer and a couple of suitors.

I said "pay me 3/5ths of the salary you just offered me and I'll work 3 days a week". I also offered to keep this arrangement flexible so that I could work in stretches of varying lengths if needed.

This did not go over well. People were actually offended by this proposition and it went nowhere.

As a founder myself, I understand the desire to only hire people that will give you their full heart and soul. But, I'm also a practical person and if someone's skills are valuable to me, then they are very likely still valuable in part.

In fact, when it comes to a product/engineering position, I think the employer would come out on top in such a scenario. They still get access to the person's brain and all of their knowledge and ideas. For someone that's being offered high compensation, their knowledge and ideas are probably a big part of the reason why.

udfalkso··on A Request for a Startup: Gmail 'Waiting For Reply' Tab
Hit reply, save as draft. Go back to what you were doing. Your drafts then become your email to-do list and you never forget anything. Starring is a bit worse because you may also star stuff that's important or that you want to keep around later.

It's still coarse, but for me at least it's been very effective.
