udfalkso··on Ask HN: Is Erlang an albatross to Elixir adoption?
I've built quite a lot with Elixir at this point, and I love it, and I haven't written any erlang at all (other than maybe a couple of very simple function calls). I don't think this is a real problem, except for those building very complex applications.
udfalkso··on Fruits and vegetables are less nutritious than they used to be
I recently read a great book that dug into this issue, explaining a lot of the history behind it and exploring potential future solutions. The Dorito Effect. Would recommend.
udfalkso··on Launch HN: Koko (YC W22 Nonprofit) – Online Suicide Prevention Kit
Awesome, thanks. Signed up.
udfalkso··on Launch HN: Koko (YC W22 Nonprofit) – Online Suicide Prevention Kit
Please consider creating Elixir bindings for this. I’d love to try use it for my site isitnormal.com where unfortunately I’ve had to deal with this issue for years (doing my best). Thanks! Amazing initiative!
udfalkso··on Crypto is an unproductive bubble
You're forgetting a 2nd important use case. Protection against arbitrary, political, variable "money printing". This is important for a store of value.
udfalkso··on Hoppscotch: Open-source alternative to Postman
I hadn't known about request chains, very interesting! Thanks
udfalkso··on New York is using cameras with microphones to ticket loud cars
One egregiously loud motorcycle rolling through manhattan can be a nuisance to literally millions of people. This is unreasonable and a ticketing system like this makes a ton of sense.

Police enforcement could probably solve the issue just as effectively. Cops ignore loud honking and loud cars when its right in front of them. If they would just stop ignoring such things the frequency would surely go down as well.

udfalkso··on Show HN: EdgeDB 1.0
I like the flow of yours, but it doesn't capture the GraphQL piece. Where do you specify the nested limit and desired fields for the inner "actors"?

Thx, fixed!

udfalkso··on HTTP Toolkit
Insomnia is great, I use it daily. Highly reccommend.
udfalkso··on Ask HN: Which tech stack is the most fun?
Elixir/Phoenix and LiveView has been really fun (and productive!) for me
udfalkso··on Twitter launches Bitcoin tips, NFTs, recorded Spaces, creator fund and more
Try blue wallet or muun
udfalkso··on Atlas – Partners in Parkour
The way the robots moved in the movie "I, Robot" actually feels a lot like this. Impressive and scary.
udfalkso··on Goodbye, Fleets
They should just have been normal tweets that disappear after X hours. No special location, no visual treatment, etc. Just ephemeral tweets that don't stick around forever on your profile.

That would have gotten people tweeting when they might have been afraid to otherwise. That would have been the appropriate equivalent of the features they were inspired by on other platforms.

udfalkso··on Show HN: Obsidian for Mobile – Plain-text knowledge base on the go
I originally switched to Obsidian for the vim bindings, and it's been solid. My only major issue with it was a lack of ability to edit things on mobile (using drop box app to edit markdown files was OK but def. not great).

I generally need simple things on the go, like checking off an item on a to-do list. Almost built my own mini-markdown viewer/editor to do this myself but glad I didn't as now this mobile app totally solves my issue. Great update, thanks!

udfalkso··on We replaced rental brokers with software and filled 200 vacant apartments
This is a fallacy, at least in NY. I asked my last landlord about this. I asked "if brokers can't charge renters their fee will you pay it instead?". He replied immediately, "no way, I'll just ask my nephew to show the apartments instead". I had just paid a 12% fee to a broker a year earlier with this same landlord! Thousands of dollars. The broker did very little for this exorbitant fee, they opened a door for a dozen people maybe, and uploaded a few pictures online. They were simply the gate-keeper and I had no choice in the matter.

The only reason landlords deal with them is that it's easier for them to do so, so why not. It's pervasive enough, as a quirk of history, that it's tolerated. They certainly do not provide value that matches up with their fees in most cases.

Rents may go up, but it will be only a fraction of the insane fees retail brokers in NY charge. It needs to change.

udfalkso··on Ask HN: Are you satisfied with Elixir or do you regret choosing Elixir?
I still love it a few years in. Every project I've used it on has worked really nicely with low resource usage and close to zero maintenance. Switching from RoR to Phoenix/Elixir takes some learning, mostly due to the switch to functional programming, but it's worth it imo. Everything becomes so easy to reason about, test, debug, etc. You'll learn a lot from it and become a better developer in general even when going back to ruby/python afterward.

udfalkso··on No More KYC with ShapeShift
For certain ERC20 tokens... but great move, and hopefully they can extend it to Bitcoin and others soon as well.
udfalkso··on Show HN: I made an alternative platform for professional profiles
Very cool!

One thing I'd need to have if I continue to play with it is some toggle for public/draft. Right now it seems my profile is immediately public but I'm not sure I want to keep it yet, and it's still a WIP even if I do. Thanks!

udfalkso··on Houdini.how
I thought this was going to teach me how Houdini did some of his magic tricks :(
udfalkso··on Honda claims it will launch the first Level 3 autonomous production car in March
Sounds like it's "level 4" in slow bumper to bumper traffic only. I'd trust Tesla Autopilot similarly in that situation as well.
udfalkso··on Ask HN: As a person, what can I do to improve a city?
Pick up one or two pieces of trash off the street every day as you walk around. Imagine if everyone did this how much nicer the place would look?
udfalkso··on Ask HN: What are real-life useful use-cases for blockchain (not currencies)?
Timestamping can be accomplished cheaply by piggy backing on a secure blockchain that’s already being used for the purpose of money (Bitcoin). No need to start from scratch for each use case.
