type-r··on Need help with students who've turned my class into a dating service
The specific numbers would make a big impact, and it depends alot on what we define as 'harassment'.

Is it 20 among a class of 600? Or is it 20 among a class of 50? How pushy are they about it? Do they stop if I tell them I don't care once? twice? twenty?

These are all relevant questions but it feels like many folks are automatically treating it as if they make up half the class and they're doing the absolute maximum amount that's just under what would be considered 'harassment'.

For what it's worth, most of the people in my college classes (including myself often) didn't give a shit about any part of the class except for the grade.

>Lots of creeps here in the comments too. Some might call a 22 year old pretending to be helpful to younger 17 year olds for their ulterior motives, "grooming".

The age of consent is 16 in 16-33 states in the US (depending on how you count), and 17 in another 5. Wild to be labeling what is legal behavior in much of the country as "grooming."

I think often we way over-weight environmental factors in this area. As individuals we have crazy amounts of agency to change things for ourselves. FWIW I barely dated in school, partly because I didn't care much for social interaction but also (maybe mostly) because I was quite clueless about romantic attraction. Since graduating and especially getting into my 30s, things have become so much easier.

Especially as a male, you can really change your situation by consistently choosing to invest in becoming a compelling partner.

I mean, yeah? If it turned into harassment then no, but the post itself says that's not happening.

How is this any different from Bob talking your ear off about some hobby that he has that you have absolutely zero interest in? You just don't listen or tell him directly you don't care. This thread makes me feel like I'm going insane, this is basic human interaction.

This is a fantastic suggestion. Probably not going to be applied by this professor but I love the symmetry of 'playing games' back and forth. Sounds fun honestly, as either side.

what do we know? genuinely asking
type-r··on Ask HN: Do you feel psychological safety at your job?
Definitely identify with this viewpoint -- I've heard the same feedback around the worldview being "unhealthy" but I would actually argue it is more accurate and provides clarity for me in regards to my relationship with my work. The main positive as I see it is in avoiding frustrations stemming from things completely out of my control.
type-r··on Surgeon General says 13 is ‘too early’ to join social media
> A lot of social life for kids happens online.

I think that's a big part of the problem. I want to encourage more of that social life to happen in person. I would feel bad if I was causing them to miss out on IRL events.

type-r··on Best and worst decisions I’ve made
The thing is, the half-life on this is ridiculously short. My approach now is to start flossing ~2 weeks before my biannual dental appointment. I always receive high praise about my gum health.

Take from that what you will.

type-r··on Amazon Will Start Charging Prime Members for US Grocery Orders of Less Than $150
What a weird way to frame things. Grocery delivery is just a job specialization reality. There are many things I wouldn't do for others what they currently cost me, but that doesn't meant they're automatically unsustainable.
type-r··on Ask HN: Why Is Everything Declining?
This is in surely reference to Biden. See things like https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=455169079910588
type-r··on Show HN: Generate Anki cards from online links, powered by GPT-3
Since it looks like the export to Anki is still in progress, I can recommend using https://github.com/kerrickstaley/genanki -- it's been very stable over the 2 years I've been using it. I think it's a much better solution than csv or AnkiConnect, since it requires no actual work from the user except for opening an apkg.
type-r··on Slack is the opposite of organizational memory (2018)
why does it matter what channels you're in? i just mute all channels except for the ones that i actually care about. my channel list is probably in the low hundreds but i hide it anyway and just use stars to show the ones i often navigate to
type-r··on Slack is the opposite of organizational memory (2018)
It is a shame that by default, Slack is set up to be high-interruption. But this is true of any IM app and I wouldn't necessarily call it a problem of the app itself, I mean they are building an "instant" messenger. I agree with the author that it's normally counter to my own goals (like deep work). But this is a ridiculously easy fix -- you just turn off notifications, whether visual or auditory.

If your workplace requires instant responses over Slack, that's a problem with your employer and/or their culture, not the application.

I personally find Slack to be fine. I have all notifications turned off (including the red badge), and set myself as permanently away. I use it as a lower-latency email, and for that it works quite well.

type-r··on 1min high-intensity exercise 3x a week improves fitness as much as 3x aerobics (2016)
How can a diet both be plenty of vegetables but also low carb? As far as I know basically all vegetables are 50~70% carbs.

it doesn't happen all the time. for Google, this is the first time they've ever done a large set of layoffs in their 25 year history.
type-r··on Spotify reducing employee base by about 6%
Why do you say it has shifted "for good"? The Fed itself plans to bring interest rates back down actually fairly quickly [0], following a half-year of decreasing inflation rates [1].

Nearly all major tech companies have announced layoffs in the last few months. Which companies would you say are "doing well" right now?

The only part that's a myth is that it's only a single decade. Japan's GDP has been flat for over 30 years now. USA's has tripled during the same time period.
type-r··on “Copycat” layoffs won’t help tech companies or their employees

What companies specifically are you referring to? In the last few months we've seen layoffs from Microsoft, Google, Facebook, and Amazon. These rank among the most profitable tech companies in the world. https://companiesmarketcap.com/tech/most-profitable-tech-com...

type-r··on Google calls in help from Larry Page and Sergey Brin for A.I. fight
YouTube and Netflix revenues are actually almost exactly the same. Now that Netflix has launched an ad-supported version, I'm not sure how important paid vs. non-paid accounts are in considerations of who's doing better vs. worse.
type-r··on Google to reduce workforce by 12k
for a period of time, one of my previous employers had an unwritten policy that you couldn't send a job offer to a non diversity applicant at our headquarters. so yeah, these programs can actually have a pretty big impact on my life.

it's not enacting similar policies though. it's taking a reciprocal stance -- don't want to allow our apps? that's fine, but you can't expect we'll allow yours. default to open but restrict if others restrict feels like a very fair policy to me. right now we have open no matter what. this is too permissive.

i like the idea behind the quote but with PEDs (which Arnie himself used for most of his life) i feel it rings pretty untrue
type-r··on Grade inflation: What goes up must come down
i don't think I've ever understood the point of letter grades and especially of GPA. what is it even meant to measure? clearly not mastery over material since we can see from this article we've seen a steady increase (while i don't think anyone is claiming students have gotten that much better). relative rank, then? again no because of the change over time.

i believe we should have two separate measures. one, did you pass the class? and two, what was your percentile within that course? of course percentile isn't necessarily relevant to employers. but then I would argue that should already be the case with GPA.

at least the benefit with percentile is it can't experience inflation like this, and gives you a comparable value across colleges. one would be able to make judgements on, would i want a 95th percentile state school candidate or a 5th percentile ivy? with the current system this is impossible.
