tyohn··on College Grads Taking Low-Wage Jobs Displace Less Educated
Out of curiosity... do you have a degree? I wonder if the businesses owner's background has any influence on the decision. "School is a place where former A students teach mostly B students to work for C students"
tyohn··on Coin
I work for a merchant also... high volume low ticket. My thought is: Since most of our customer transactions (swipes) occur without any cashier involvement - how would V/MC know that the "real" card wasn't present?
tyohn··on The worm that regrows its head, and memories, when decapitated
Makes we wonder - if somehow we could train our bodies to transfer memories to other body parts... which leads to all sorts of interesting possibilities.
tyohn··on Pirate Bay co-founder charged with hacking and fraud
Where would you draw the line? Why not simply monitor and track everyone everywhere all the time because hey they if they did something wrong then you'd be good to go with the proof... and we all know if you don't do anything criminal you don't have anything to hide...
tyohn··on Rsshose.com - Get the whole RSS feed [help me test]
Nice an RSS feed cleaner. I love how you remove the ads!
tyohn··on The iPad Is Unbeatable
I love my Transformer! I wouldn't give it up for an Ipad...
tyohn··on Ask HN: Best book you read in 2011
What Technology Wants by Kevin Kelly - I highly recommend reading this book. The title describes what the book is about ~ as a hacker it might just make you rethink everything you do.
tyohn··on Man with multiple degrees fails standardized test for children
Wow - after reading the comments on this thread I have to say that I am thoroughly disappointed in the HN community. If you replaced the word math(ematics) with a religion of your choice you'd see the same kind of fanaticism you often see from religious zealots.

The God of math has spoken: obey, conform or be cast out...There is nothing other than Me. All other gods require Me to make them whole - in fact you can't even think without Me... Now go forth and preach my wisdom because there is no other wisdom other than Me.

tyohn··on Google+ Isn’t Going Away
This may seem a little out there but maybe Google should buy MySpace and incorporate it into G+?
tyohn··on Gmail’s new look
That is the exact comment I gave to Google (via the feed back link) when I changed back to the "old" version.
tyohn··on Why don't developers dress better?
Seriously just be yourself - what else is there really...
tyohn··on Mind-reading technology reconstructs videos from brain
I assume Facebook wants to add this to your timeline too?
tyohn··on Space Satellite UARS Adrift and Heading for Earth
I hate to show my age but - as a kid I remember being extremely excited about the possibility of finding a piece of SkyLab.
tyohn··on Show HN: Ernie's, Click & Collect Groceries
I like the idea. I'm much rather pick up my stuff than have it delivered. I don't want to wait around at home for the delivery and I don't want to wait in line at the store.

Edit: And as a plus - they could use Amazon like recommendation as customers are "shopping" instead of getting coupons after you finish your shopping - like they do in normal retail stores.

tyohn··on Show HN: my collaborative drawing webapp
I like it but maybe add an undo button?
tyohn··on Ask HN: What will be Facebook's weakness?
Over popularity...
tyohn··on Ask HN: Should I stand tall in the face of negative feedback?
"Dog goggles" - whenever I get feedback that bashes my ideas I think "dog goggles" a million dollar business... Who would have ever said that's a great idea!

Just take a look at the feedback and then move ahead. What was his motivation behind detailing why you would fail? Is he trying to save you the pain of failing? Is he working for or on a similar concept? Is he just a negative person? I just don't get it. My advice is never ask an insider about doing or making something different. It's so easy "shit all over an idea" and even site facts and figures but does the guy really know that your concept will fail before you try it? When I worked for a newspaper - I tried to tell the powers that be - that they should consider changing the way we did things but the current facts and figures told them I was wrong.

tyohn··on Interview Question: What tools have you made to help you find a job?
Maybe you should create a website that other people can use to track their applications?
tyohn··on Fake Steve Jobs: Why I'm Switching to Android
I agree with you - I didn't add much to the quality of discourse. I just feel like I need to walk on pins and needles here (YC) when I want to voice my opinion about Steve Jobs and Apple. It's almost like I'm drawing a picture of Muhammad...
tyohn··on Fake Steve Jobs: Why I'm Switching to Android
Feeling a little touchy? :)
tyohn··on Fake Steve Jobs: Why I'm Switching to Android
You know what I kind of like about this post? - before such a post on YC would have been bashed by Apple fan boys... but now after Apple's policy pigeon holed and alienated developers - I'm starting to see a real conversation about some of Apple's issues...
tyohn··on Gave up a day job Now what? - Income report #1
I'm sure this will be sort of frowned upon but what about selling stuff on eBay? I know people who buy stuff at yard sales or suchlike and resell it on eBay...
tyohn··on Blood-like microbes spew out of Antarctic glacier
I have to wonder what people would have thought about this during biblical times.
tyohn··on Ask HN: Help beta test my startup and possibly win $50
The site also lets you connect/link your own ads to display with the short links you create. For instance say I ran a retail business... I could "target' my own links to display my own ads. So when a user clicks on an one of my unbig.me link in the retailers Twitter stream - one of the retailers own ads could display.
tyohn··on Ask HN: Help beta test my startup and possibly win $50
That is a very good point. I've been thinking about that issue for awhile now. Thanks for the input.
tyohn··on Ask HN: Help beta test my startup and possibly win $50
Thanks!
tyohn··on Ask HN: Help beta test my startup and possibly win $50
If anyone is at all interested: Almost all the traffic from HN skips the ads via the "Click to close and continue" link at the top right - while the majority of Twitter users let the ad run for a full 12 seconds.
tyohn··on Ask HN: Help beta test my startup and possibly win $50
You're not the first person to tell me that. If the concept isn't successful I'll change direction to a weight-loss app :)
tyohn··on Ask HN: Help beta test my startup and possibly win $50
Yeah it's by no means perfect but I am working on it. And I need more advertisers to match more effectively :)
tyohn··on Ask HN: Help beta test my startup and possibly win $50
I think your vision is a little short sighted. I think business could use this on their own social media sites and alike.
