tyohn··on Ask YC: Can you provide Feedback on my customizable homepage start-up?
It's cool! I like the site. I like the idea. What group of people do you think will use it? I was thinking thinking this would be great for "unsophisticated" users. When I worked as the webmaster for a large school division in Virgina - I always got ask to help employees "create" things on their computers. It was kind of like putting a picture of your kids on your desk or desktop screen saver. When other people visited your office/cube they always ask about your kids. And the social aspect of your idea might fit in too. If you're interested in testing out the "unsophisticated" users angle let me know - I don't work at the school anymore but I still have inroads to to other similar environments.
tyohn··on Corduroy: A billing system for your startup (launched today)
Interesting but - $59.00 per month for the service?
tyohn··on How I Wrote a Search Engine in 6 Weeks
6 weeks? Why so long? - (just kidding) I am building a search engine as my current project. It took all of a weekend to get it up and running. I didn't do it alone my friend helped so I guess maybe that doesn't count ;) We've been crawling for a little under 3 weeks and I keep making interface and search-results tweaks but otherwise it works "ok". I am in the process of switching it over to S3 (maybe EC2) - after that change I think I'll open it up to the public.
tyohn··on Social Networking Advertising - It Will Be Even Harder than we Think
Using the "request for some restaurant recommendations" example; couldn't potential advertisers put a coupon some where in the "conversation" that might sway the requester to visit their restaurant instead of the other options?
tyohn··on Ask YC: Can you point to someone that has made money off an idea?
Nope, I don't know the guy or the company just the book. He does seem to have a good reputation but like I said I don't know...
tyohn··on Ask YC: Can you point to someone that has made money off an idea?
I know of an example from the book "How to license your million dollar idea" by Harvey Reese. He thought of an idea, drew it on paper, faxed it to a company and got a deal - all in one day. Although: He did quite a bit of business with the company previous to his fax and he does talk about needing to evaluate the originality and market need of your idea.
tyohn··on Ask YC: Can you point to someone that has made money off an idea?
I guess the question is how do investors know an idea is "obviously good"? Did anyone/everyone know that the pagerank algorithm was "obviously good" before they tested it? And if it was - did they build it/think of it in one day?
tyohn··on Ask YC: Can you point to someone that has made money off an idea?
So are you saying that someone thinks of and idea - like a car powered by toenail clippings. They never do any research, they don't build a prototype, they don't even know if it will work but they want to sell the idea?
tyohn··on Ask YC: Can you point to someone that has made money off an idea?
I believe that Tesla sold several of his patents.
tyohn··on Ask YC: Can you point to someone that has made money off an idea?
Nikola Tesla
tyohn··on Ask YC: Payment as a method of quality retention?
same here - I'd be willing to pay a small fee
tyohn··on News.yc Meetup in KOP, PA in One Week (Thu 4/24)
I've attended this several times. If you're in the area check it out its a great place to meet up with other hackers/entrepreneurs.
tyohn··on The "one pair of glasses" theory
I'm not sure logic will work for your "one pair of glasses". Logic won't help you deal with people because people are rarely if ever logical. As far as awareness of the immediacy of death; well I believe that death is simply part of life - so that won't work for me. Although if you mean awareness of the immediacy of death - as in Carpe Diem - I'm all with ya!
tyohn··on Ask YC: Feedback on my site: pageonetimes.com
I like the site but have you considered adding a search?
tyohn··on My startup: Build your own search engine and share it.
What technology are you using for your crawler?
tyohn··on My startup: Build your own search engine and share it.
I like it. I wish I would have had access to this a few years ago when I had to build my own search for a company I worked for :) How do you plan on making money?
tyohn··on Domain Squatter Tries New Business: Running Websites
"each site will cost him between $1 and $3 million a piece" - are you kidding me? Just to build it out? Wouldn't you build a "test" site first before you invested a million dollars?

p.s. Congrats - to Auctomatic...

tyohn··on Ask YC: Feedback From Fellow Hackers On ShowFilter.com
If it wasn't for the introduction you gave here I wouldn't know what the site was about.

When I visited the site I had no idea who I am rating the shows for; one person or a group of people or whom? In addition maybe you could provide the YC users with a (demo account) user name and password to test the system? Oh and I tried to rate a show but I got a server error...

Side Note: When I go to the sign up page and I try to go back to the main page by clicking on the logo it stays on the sign up page.

tyohn··on BigDog robot is back with a new video
ok that made me laugh - kreative :)
tyohn··on Ask YC: How did you name your startup?
I start with names related to the concept but it always seems to morph into names that aren't related. I end up pulling words out of my brain and then break them apart and put them together in different forms. I also use a thesaurus to find other meanings for words...
tyohn··on Ask YC: How did you name your startup?
I am working on that right now. Something that is easy to remember - easy to spell correctly - and creative...
tyohn··on Why Is There No New "Einstein"?
There is one - J. Craig Venter. I know he's not a physicist but I think the comparison is valid.
tyohn··on This is the first time I've seen this - Google search
At bottom of my Google search: In response to a complaint we received under the US Digital Millennium Copyright Act, we have removed 1 result(s) from this page. If you wish, you may read the DMCA complaint that caused the removal(s)
tyohn··on Ask YC: What logo do you prefer
You're kidding right? Neither.
tyohn··on Ask YC: what is your favorite startup related quote?
Because its there...
tyohn··on ASk YC: Your opinions on my website. And a few questions.
My thoughts about your questions: 1. Launch - its fine in its current state and you'll be able to get feedback.

2. I'd use PayPerPost, StumbleUpon, maybe Adwords...here's what YC users say: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=104627

3. For this question I'll refer to Chris Anderson http://www.wired.com/techbiz/it/magazine/16-03/ff_free?curre...

Side Note: I wish it had better time tracking - that way I could use it for my freelance web work.

tyohn··on Ask YC: Do you believe social networks have a lock on their users?
I think a certain percentage will stick to what they know. But yet if you had a specialized social network for lets say insect collectors - members of the other social networks who loved to collect insects would probably jump ship. And then another question is what would make one "insect collector" social site better then the other? I guess you could offer free insects to users or suchlike. Do something focused and cool and maybe you can "unlock" users...
tyohn··on Did Arrington Just Kill YC News?
I was wondering the same thing.
tyohn··on Social networking finds for the week
Cool we're social site - who knew...
tyohn··on Genius hack by PhD candidate (with source code): Turn any monitor into a 3D display using a Wiimote
I wish I had a Wii developers kit. It would be so cool to create games using this technique.
