tylergetsay··on In the US opioid-maker Purdue is bankrupt. Its global counterparts make millions
I agree. If you think they're bad I really hope you don't get a kidney stone.
tylergetsay··on Independent directors of 23andMe resign from board
I think a more common use case might be finding siblings if your adopted, or trying to reengage with your roots if you were say a member of an indian tribe or native hawaiian.

I have a family member who is retired and has taken up geneology as a hobby, she has connected our family history really far back. Not my cup of tea personally but I can see the appeal, its like a treasure hunt. She has traveled to go to old libraries and dig up newspaper archives.

tylergetsay··on Running NixOS on Proxmox LXC
Its also possible to build the Proxmox container directly with nixos-generators, with the added bonus that you can configure the VM specs in nix as well

tylergetsay··on Comma.ai: Refactoring for Growth
The comma pedal allows for it if you can source/build one
tylergetsay··on Ask HN: How do you choose a hostname for personal devices?

tylergetsay··on Julian Assange has reached a plea deal with the U.S., allowing him to go free
I would bet it is Saipan local goverment, they probably don't have (or dont want to expend) the resources to secure him.
tylergetsay··on The one-year anniversary of my total glossectomy
Anyone who goes through something like this is an inspiration to those they interact with. I wish the absolute best for you.

tylergetsay··on Drone Flying 101 – An interactive tutorial for beginners
I bought a $300 fpv kit with small drone, goggles, and controller that worked in the sims. Emax tinyhawk i believe. Small enough to fly indoors
tylergetsay··on Ask HN: How to handle user file uploads?
I have used https://github.com/cshum/imagor infront of S3 before and liked it, there is many (some commercial) offerings for this
tylergetsay··on Tailscale SSH is now Generally Available
you also can't forward ports which kind of makes sense from their security model, but is annoying when wanting to use one host as a bastion
tylergetsay··on Meta CTO explains how AI changes the plan for AR glasses
These glasses don't have a screen, just camera and speaker
tylergetsay··on Jury Finds Realtors Conspired, Awards Nearly $1.8B in Damages
Not only everything you mentioned above -- the associations control access to the homes themselves
tylergetsay··on Drugmakers are set to pay 23andMe to access consumer DNA
This is already illegal though, directly by the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act, which passed 420 to 12. I'm not pro DNA collection by any means but this argument gets tossed around a lot and it's clearly undesirable to everybody, and we can change/set laws to prohibit it.
tylergetsay··on BP to purchase $100M in Tesla Superchargers
"Tesla chargers" is sensational because recently every major automotive manufacturer adopted the "Tesla" charging port (NACS). Having fast charge spots retrofitted into existing gas stations, closing the gap between gas and ev sounds awesome. They need as much extra utility infrastructure as your house when installing
tylergetsay··on Ask HN: Why has no one replaced Ticketmaster?
It's not that LN owns the venues, but that the venues have an exclusive ticket agreement with TM. So if you want to perform at this venue, you must sell via TM. When my startup was trying to compete, we found that basically every single outdoor amphitheater had exclusive ticket rights. This makes stuff like crowdfunding a concert impossible
tylergetsay··on DSLinux – Linux for the Nintendo DS
Every once and a while I get the urge to run this again and host a webpage from it.. sucks this device lacked a lot of IO and the wifi stack is so weird
tylergetsay··on The Tailscale Universal Docker Mod
The "benefit" of one tailscale daemon per container is https/external access/etc can be handled automatically
tylergetsay··on Does Market Timing Work?
Schwab gives a similar return, they don't offer any high yield savings
tylergetsay··on Burning money on paid ads for a dev tool – what we've learned
This is super insightful, thanks for outlining this!
tylergetsay··on FTC sues Amazon for illegally maintaining monopoly power
Yes -- They even ship the products directly from China to Amazon, who handles all the logistics of importing.

tylergetsay··on Croatia demolished houses of libertarian project “Liberland”, seized property
Its not really meant as a "documentary" but more as entertainment, but a youtuber visited the area under this idea. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jb8T9X5K1AA
tylergetsay··on Choose Postgres queue technology
it wont work with a timestamp because each write will have an affected row of 1 beacuse the writes happen at different times. setting a boolean is static
tylergetsay··on Android 14 adds support for using your smartphone as a webcam
A dashcam will loop recordings, saving with a button or some kind of gyro event
tylergetsay··on 64-bit bank balances ‘ought to be enough for anybody’?
For simple accounting I've always used integers and done all operations in cents, only converting on the frontend. what's my downside here? I guess it wouldn't support unit prices less than a penny
tylergetsay··on Problems with homemade billing systems
Same with "Role your own auth"
tylergetsay··on Unshackle: A tool to bypass Windows and Linux password logins
A cleaner imo solution is kon-boot which modifies the kernel on windows/osx to disable password checking
