“Ever growing world population” - isn’t demographic growth in decline?
twojobsoneboss··on The biggest source of waste is untapped skilled pragmatists
The only constant is change. It sucks esp when later in career and just looking for stability, but it’s just the way it is.

Reduce expenses, earn as much as possible, save and invest wisely, and remove your reliance on the system as soon as you can, is my advice.

To be clear, there’s a big difference between taking 4x as long to do something useful, vs actually doing nothing, or something of negative value ;-)

If you’re fast and working remote, you can still achieve seemingly normal output while reclaiming much of your time

If you’re in a team lead or staff (most places) kind of position you can’t…

Boss makes a dollar, I make a dime. That's why I poop, on company time.

“Jobs for life” part is huge and under appreciated - there aren’t many jobs where you don’t have to worry about ageism nowadays

Stayed in the South many years and while yes they can be busy bodies, I don’t think they actually wish ill on others.

This is the kind of insider comment HN needs more of!
twojobsoneboss··on What Boeing did to all the guys who remember how to build a plane
Have you been in upper management? It is stressful and if things don’t go well it’s quite likely that you’ll get canned, vs an IC

Grass is always greener

twojobsoneboss··on What Boeing did to all the guys who remember how to build a plane
Apart from pushing someone out who they don’t wanna pay severance for, what incentive does a manager have to treat one of their reports like dirt?
twojobsoneboss··on Ask HN: Who's getting their job applications rejected?
I mean it hits the seniors hard too - you’re talking about a 50% or more reduction in this type of job compared to before
twojobsoneboss··on Ask HN: Who's getting their job applications rejected?
It’s definitely a recession for US based tech workers
twojobsoneboss··on Ask HN: Who's getting their job applications rejected?
Ding ding ding, this right here is a big part of it. Previously it was very rare for vc funded startups (which are the main source of decent tech jobs apart from big tech) to hire from abroad, but now it’s more the norm rather than the exception (just look at the HN postings, tons of latam)

The remote work movement chickens have come home to roost

twojobsoneboss··on Are we all trapped in The Matrix 25 years later?
It wasn’t like this when the Matrix was produced - but maybe the Wachovski brothers were prescient
twojobsoneboss··on Are we all trapped in The Matrix 25 years later?
I have increasingly thought of this, how our current lives are ever more reminiscent of the matrix, being confined in our isolating community-less suburban “pods”, zombiefied on our phones, with no money or safety net to do much else, passing each day like the last
twojobsoneboss··on U.S. sues Apple, accusing it of maintaining an iPhone monopoly
You know all the incredible inventions that came out of Bell Labs (eg the telephone, the transistor, the C programming language)?

Yup, all those happened when they were an uber-monopoly and had the resources and breathing space to fund such bets!

twojobsoneboss··on U.S. sues Apple, accusing it of maintaining an iPhone monopoly
They are a company who’s out to make money and not a non profit, no?

Nothing worse than tech bros pontificating about macro and economic policy, thinking it’ll give them an edge and FIRE earlier
twojobsoneboss··on Loneliness in Midlife: A Growing Gap Between US and Europe
Yeah I was thinking more bootstrapped businesses or small businesses - the tax advantages for such businesses you get in the US are insane
twojobsoneboss··on Loneliness in Midlife: A Growing Gap Between US and Europe
Ding ding ding
twojobsoneboss··on Loneliness in Midlife: A Growing Gap Between US and Europe
Europe is objectively better for salaried workers who will never have a shot at early retirement (which is prob 90% of the US population)

US is better for business owners and entrepreneurs and maybe the super ambitious

twojobsoneboss··on Experienced engineers are struggling to get hired
That’s fair. Was just pointing out the viewpoint. We’re all just along for the ride to the ebbs and flows of history at the end of the day. Good times and hard times come and go for different groups at different times.

I think it should be fine to say “good for you, but sucks for me”, and have empathy towards groups that have the rug pulled from under them

twojobsoneboss··on Experienced engineers are struggling to get hired
Have you seen the family formation rates recently? Way more people are deciding against kids now, with costs and salary not keeping up being usually the major factor… and this is across the board, not just tech
twojobsoneboss··on Experienced engineers are struggling to get hired
Really useful advice. More people should see and heed this

Keyword outside of tech - it’s well established that employment and wages is doing pretty well in large parts of the economy esp the trades, whereas it’s been the opposite in tech, and not just entry level either
