twfarland··on Optimal quitting
Insufferable, patronising humble-bragging. This belongs on LinkedIn
twfarland··on Ask HN: Cheap places to live with a good intellectual atmosphere?
Prague, if you live outside the tourist area. Very healthy arts/music scene. And you're a short train ride from Berlin, Vienna, and Budapest, which have great scenes of their own.
twfarland··on Uber Scam in Brazil – Drivers Have ‘Challenges’ Ending Trips
Brazil is becoming a parody of itself
twfarland··on Pre-sleep treatment with galantamine stimulates lucid dreaming
Had a similar experience - started as a teenager and now it's automatic. Also dreams are becoming more abstract, more visceral, and more epic as I age.

Sometimes wish I could turn it off, though - it can be exhausting. I'd like sleep to be more restful by default but have a way to choose to have a lucid dream if desired.

twfarland··on The Rise of Edible Insect Farming
Yeah nah this isn't gonna catch on. Synthetic or simulated meats will mature commercially first.
twfarland··on React is the new jQuery
This is from the guy who posted recently about struggling to learn React.
twfarland··on Redux – Not Dead Yet
Redux has been great, but after a few years, I've had enough of the action creator and reducer boilerplate, and now just use Proxy objects for external state (with a listener on the handler's setter). It's mutable but hasn't been a problem in practice.
twfarland··on Ask HN: What do you do on long-haul flights?
If you take Air NZ, they are generous with the wine. I get amongst that while watching bad action movies.
twfarland··on One of Estonia's first "e-residents" explains what it means
I had a similar experience. The ID card in particular was the biggest hurdle. I gave up on it.
twfarland··on Elementary Knightship found in Conway's Game of Life
The names they give these things are so cool. Frothing spaceship, oblique glider waterbear, 10hd demonoid, weekender, loafer.
twfarland··on Patent trolls are shaking us down for selling “rubies” in our game
Estonia's marketing as an e-nation doesn't live up to the reality.
twfarland··on Estonia, the Digital Republic
I'm using gmail, which has a great spam filter, but have had a lot land in the inbox.
twfarland··on Estonia, the Digital Republic
There seems to be a fair bit of tech work here, at least, but the average salary is low, and the personal tax burden (with social tax) is high.
twfarland··on Estonia, the Digital Republic
Terrible experience here. Endless problems with the ID card, slow, unhelpful support, clunky company admin portal with poor translations. Got spammed by random accounting firms as soon as I was on the company register. I gave up and decided to just continue using my NZ-based company in the end. They need to do a better job if they want to live up to their self-congratulatory marketing.
twfarland··on WebAssembly support now shipping in all major browsers
I would want the inverse of that, where the application logic is in some high-level language, and the rendering is done in WASM, i.e. react-dom and the diffing parts of react are in WASM.
twfarland··on React 16
Ignorance revealed :) thanks. What's Vue's idiomatic approach for managing state at the top, outside of all components (like Redux)?
twfarland··on Things learned while running your own self-funded startup
I also use that billing strategy happily. There's another detail that helps with 'training' new clients on good payment behaviour - give them a small % discount on the next milestone if they pay early on the first.
twfarland··on React 16
Agreed. Pure views are much simpler.
twfarland··on Scenic Tram Simulator
Very calming way to start the day. Almost like a guided meditation.
twfarland··on Clojure will affect the way you think about programming
Scheme is a smaller language and has legendary beginner books. Start with HTDP and then SICP.
twfarland··on Pattern Matching with TypeScript
This looks a bit overdone. For the first example I'd just do it like this:

    const numbers = [,'one','two','three']
    function matchNumber(n: number) { return numbers[n] || n }
twfarland··on What I've learned from 100s of interviews with candidates at top tech companies
Candidates who know their worth should also have the confidence to grill interviewers. Including technical questions.
twfarland··on Recovering from Burnout and Depression
Specialisation helps. Look at what the market wants, is paying well for, and is underserved by. Then you can just look for advertised contract gigs. It's also nice to have one or two contacts who funnel you work, but not essential, if you have an in-demand specialty.
twfarland··on Recovering from Burnout and Depression
For me, contracting works because you can go in, provide value, get paid, and get out, before getting too involved in some inevitably quixotic adventure. Of course, you have to pick your clients/jobs. It's more pleasant to work on greenfield stuff or for clients where one of the founders is technical. And define clear end-points up-front. Otherwise, it will be a pain. Pickiness is a privilege that should be used to the max.
twfarland··on Recovering from Burnout and Depression
I burned out three times in salaried jobs. Mostly due to chaotic leadership. Hard work isn't the problem. Chaos and bad leadership is the problem. Moved to contracting, and have been fine since.
twfarland··on Build Yourself a Redux
typescript makes it tolerable, if well-used
twfarland··on Build Yourself a Redux
You can replace redux with any FRP library. Your state is a signal/stream/whatever that folds over an initial state with a signal/stream/whatever of actions/messages. Your top level view component should listen and render based on that. Example: https://github.com/twfarland/sprezzatura-acto-mario
twfarland··on Ask HN: I got duped into working on legacy code, should I leave?
yes
twfarland··on Apple Paid $0 in Taxes to New Zealand, Despite Sales of $4.2B
Where's the explanation of how this was achieved?
twfarland··on Ask HN: I got duped into working on legacy code, should I leave?
If you were lied to, that is reason enough for leaving. If they lie about the role from the start, they will lie about other things.
