tw04··on 2026 looks ominous for media, from Hollywood to journalism
> It feels like we’re getting there with journalism

Huh? Media is less trusted now than it’s ever been and that’s largely driven by Twitter driving people to be “first” instead of accurate.

Not to mention the state sponsored bots promoting lies to try to distract from actual journalism. Combine that with billionaires attempting to buy up all our trusted sources of news to completely control the narrative (a functioning government would put a nail in Ellison) and we’re screwed. And no, there’s 0 chance that individuals are filing the void that will be created. They don’t have the access or the funds to do anything significantly meaningful.

tw04··on Texas first state to end American bar association oversight of law schools
That’s exactly what the end goal is. It’ll only be a matter of time before Texas has schools that don’t even attempt to teach impartiality.
tw04··on Bose has released API docs and opened the API for its EoL SoundTouch speakers
> Bose should not receive praise for this move.

Remind me of any other vendor in recent history that end of lifed a hardware product and then open sourced it whether they got backlash or not. Because I can’t think of a single one.

So yes, Bose absolutely deserves praise.

tw04··on A closer look at a BGP anomaly in Venezuela
They have a relationship with your cert provider and get a copy of your cert or the root so they can decrypt the traffic.
tw04··on Dude, where's my supersonic jet?
Presumably there are no flights from Paris to Munich then?

There are. A flight is about an hour and a half, a train is about 5 hours. Far more people fly between the two every day than take a train.

tw04··on Dude, where's my supersonic jet?
> Historically, faster transport doesn’t replace slower transport wholesale; it creates a premium tier while pushing the mass market down to a lower cost/energy equilibrium.

If that were true, we’d all be taking trains and boats everywhere. We aren’t.

tw04··on Pebble Round 2
Old notifications, assuming a 5 button watch, tap the middle button, then select notifications which on my watch is the first option in the list.
tw04··on Pebble Round 2
> Nope, some are touch screen only

Which ones are touch screen only?

tw04··on Donut Lab’s all-solid-state battery delivers 400 Wh/kg of energy density
I don’t see any mention of clay in the article, just this:

> It can be produced in custom sizes, voltages, and geometries, enabling structural integration and non-traditional formats like serving as the body of a drone or a vehicle chassis.

Battery packs are part of the structure of basically all EVs. That’s not really something new or unique.

tw04··on Pebble Round 2
I take it you don’t have a garmin? You can play music directly from it (spotify, YouTube music, etc apps). You get phone notifications, can respond to text messages, make payments, and newer versions include LTE. They are absolutely a smart watch.
tw04··on Pebble Round 2
Huh? Are you sure you aren’t thinking of another brand? Literally every garmin watch I can find on their site has buttons.

The size is also very much watch specific. They will all be thicker than a pebble, but they’ll also all have far more features. Like pulse ox, which is one of the main drivers of thickness.

tw04··on Trump says Venezuela’s Maduro captured after strikes
If we’re still chasing cheap oil we’re going to get crushed by China. Both from an economic and national security perspective, ignoring renewable energy to pursue burning more fossil fuels is the height of ignorance. Not only are we destroying the planet for future generations, burning oil is already more expensive than wind and solar + batteries.
tw04··on Microsoft kills official way to activate Windows 11/10 without internet
I don’t think that math is quite right. Graduating from college in 2000 would be 47, not 57 unless they were 32 when they graduated college.
tw04··on Foreign tech workers are avoiding travel to the US
Until/unless we institute ranked choice voting, the vast majority of people will NEVER have a candidate that reflects their preferences in any meaningful way.
tw04··on Foreign tech workers are avoiding travel to the US
> It's disingenuous to blame Trump when this is what U.S. voters chose.

It’s really not. Exit polls show a tiny fraction of voters picked Trump for anything other than his empty promises of “instantly fixing the economy”.

That’s ignoring all the people who didn’t vote at all. Saying not voting is the same as voting for the bad thing is an empty accusation that lacks critical thinking.

tw04··on Tesla’s 4680 battery supply chain collapses as partner writes down deal by 99%
> all paid for by global satellite internet revenue.

Huh? You think starlink is funding space-x? If they lost all government and private launch business tomorrow and had to rely on Stalink revenues to stay in business they wouldn’t last through next month.

> His electric crossover/SUV was the best selling car in America.

It was, and then he fried his brain and decided to support fascists across the globe and can’t understand why people no longer want to support him or his businesses.

He apparently watched handmaid’s tale and thought “man those Gilead guys are really onto something”.

tw04··on Tesla’s 4680 battery supply chain collapses as partner writes down deal by 99%
> it's that he profitably manufactured decently reliable cars for a price that lots of people found attractive.

Huh? Nearly all of his profit was government subsidies designed to push EV adoption. And now he’s trying to pull the ladder up behind him.

Tesla has not been profitable for the vast majority of its existence when it comes to selling a car for more money than it takes to produce.

tw04··on How we lost communication to entertainment
And I can guarantee they’re on government assistance because I know what a “mover” makes, and I know what diapers and formula cost, and they aren’t paying for multiple children on that salary alone.
tw04··on How we lost communication to entertainment
Yes, college aged men who aren’t in a relationship are avoiding pursuing one because they’re thinking about whether or not they’ll be able to afford a house some day. It definitely has nothing to do with social media and dating apps breaking human interaction.
tw04··on How we lost communication to entertainment
> predominantly caused by telling women they should prioritise education and career over children

Who is “telling them that”? Society by allowing them to open a checking account? Women’s suffrage? The reality is that other than the most privileged, a modern family can’t afford to function without both parents working. I assume you’re for raising the minimum wage to allow a family to run on a single income with multiple children? Or your solution is to send us back to the dark ages and remove womens rights?

> enabling the invention of the single mother who survives on government largesse.

There’s literally nobody who has kids as a single mother with the goal of raising them on welfare, that might be the single most ridiculous statement in this thread.

> Separating church and state appears to be contributing at least to some extent.

The Russian Orthodox Church is government sponsored. How’s their birth rate going?

tw04··on How we lost communication to entertainment
> Remember when it was Reality TV that was supposed to be the downfall of civilizations?

I’d say we’ve already got measurable statistics. When half of genz isn’t dating or married, it’s signaling trouble.

https://aibm.org/commentary/gen-zs-romance-gap-why-nearly-ha...

Now, we can discuss if that’s good or bad for the planet, but it’s not great for humanity.

tw04··on How we lost communication to entertainment
We’ve started instituting a “no phones” policy when the kids have sleepovers to try to combat this at least a little bit, and have constant conversations about why things like Instagram are toxic and we should just try to spend our time enjoying life.

Obviously I’m also posting here while I wait in the car waiting to pick someone up, but I actively make an effort to unplug on a regular basis.

tw04··on Nvidia's $20B antitrust loophole
Physically building a datacenter yes. Repurposing a crypto datacenter for a new purpose, no. But days is hyperbolic no matter how you look at it unless they’re reusing ALL the existing infrastructure (network/security/hvac/physical server racks/some amount of compute). And aren’t actually including the time to procure the inferencing chips.

You can call up Cisco tomorrow and offer them a billion dollars to get you an entire datacenter worth of switches tomorrow and the answer is going to be no because they just don’t keep that much inventory sitting around. That’s why covid was such a shitshow.

I should give a caveat of: they could in theory redirect existing orders to you but would likely be violating contractual obligations and risk a lawsuit from the fortune 500 Peter they robbed to pay you Mr. Paul.

tw04··on Inside CECOT – 60 Minutes [video]
You and your downvote brigade can continue to hit my posts but it won’t change the fact the US has been subsidizing our agriculture sectors and oil and gas to the tune of hundreds of billions of dollars for a LONG time.

Anyone claiming the US is a completely free market is either uninformed or a delusional nationalist.

tw04··on The e-scooter isn't new – London was zooming around on Autopeds a century ago
Did someone actually think scooters were new? We had them growing up, I thought it was common knowledge the only thing novel about e-bikes and e-scooters were the lithium ion batteries and electric motors giving adequate runtime and performance.

You could drive a moped on city streets before you turned 16 which got a lot of teenagers in my hometown to work and sports in the summer when their parents couldn’t.

But they were slow, noisy, and smelly compared to a modern ebike.

tw04··on Inside CECOT – 60 Minutes [video]
Remind me where I can buy a Chinese EV?

And I assume there’s no government subsidies to allow US private sectors to compete globally because free market right?

Right?

tw04··on Inside CECOT – 60 Minutes [video]
And it would quickly be destroyed by competing governments that don’t believe in free markets and actively subsidize their industries to capture market share.
tw04··on U.S. Plans $80B Nuclear Power Expansion
There's not a lot of grift in solar and batteries, it's too easy to acquire and deploy. There is literally limitless ability for grift with nuclear.

Look no further than Trump's media corporation merging with a "fusion reactor" company. What do they have in common? Absolutely nothing, but it's an excellent conduit for bribes and fraud, and a way for Trump to send our tax dollars directly into his own pocket!

tw04··on Airbus to migrate critical apps to a sovereign Euro cloud
> just scare-mongering from the US because it has no manufacturer of 5G equipment.

Even if that were accurate, which it isn’t, what exactly do you think the US stands to gain by Europe buying 5g from someone other than China (like the European providers Ericsson and nokia)?

tw04··on Ford kills the All-Electric F-150
> *They're loaded with useless/barely-functional interior electronics that are poor copies of Tesla

Having owned both an EV Ford and a Tesla I can say with absolute certainty that the ford runs circles around the Tesla. Outside of having steam games on the screen, Tesla’s infotainment does literally nothing better, and the interface itself feels like an early 2000s Linux gui. Oh, and Ford actually supports carplay and android auto.
