Reminds me of: "The ability to play chess is the sign of a gentleman. The ability to play chess well is the sign of a wasted life." Paul Murphy.
tvelichkov··on A Beginner's Guide to Switches
As a competitive FPS player, I can say that it's not just about "changing the actuation point to your liking", but a software feature called "Rapid Trigger" [1].

This thing is here to stay, in the past I've tried all types of mechanical switches (Blue/Brown/Red) and this easily beats them all in competitive FPS, the responsiveness is on another level, and you just can't go back after that.

tvelichkov··on A method to promote sleep in crying infants using the transport response [pdf]
I've read somewhere that white noise is similar to what they hear while they are inside their Mom, so this puts them into a familiar environment, which makes them calm.

For me the big issue with DST is the stress to the organism it's causing at every transition from winter to summer time. So I was wondering instead of picking between Winter and Summer time, can't we make the transition less stresfull? I.e. instead of shifting the time by 1 hour twice a year, shift it by 15 minutes 8 times in a year? Maybe this way the organism won't feel it so much?
tvelichkov··on Help the Graphics team track down an interesting WebRender bug
As someone who experience this very often I can't say that Firefox is becoming unresponsive, you can still scroll up/down, change tabs, etc.. but the all pages are glitched similar (even worse) to the screenshots.

This very much sound like a similar issue Linux users are facing from more than a year and it's still not resolved? https://askubuntu.com/questions/1088324/firefox-becoming-unr...
tvelichkov··on Facebook staff demand Zuckerberg limit lies in politcal ads
I guess because on Newspapers, Radio and TV you cannot target a specific group of people. Yes, someone can argue that you can target a specific Newspaper, Radio or TV which may have a specific group of people, but I think its not the same.
tvelichkov··on What’s New in Python 3.8
> It also states one line before

I know and I believe there is a purpose to be exactly after that line. Writing only simple code is not enough. If you write everything in a simple manner your code will most likely be complicated, that's exactly why you have next - complex is better than complicated.

I see this feature the same way as comprehensions, scary and complex at first, but once you learn it you would wish anyone would use it.

tvelichkov··on What’s New in Python 3.8
Well the zen of python also states:

- Complex is better than complicated.

Using the walrus operator makes the code more complex, but less complicated.

Great article, so no unit testing? I knew it!
tvelichkov··on How to conduct a good programming interview
Are you saying that Facebook employees are not motivated to work? Or that now after he has been hired, he is not adding any value anymore?

Facebook is a multi-billion dollar startup and its created by the people working there. So it may not be my favorite company, but I give respect to that, and the people working there.

I can't say what's the skillset to be an effective engineer at a large company, but I do believe that it must be a SUBSET of the skillset required to create a successful startup.

tvelichkov··on How to conduct a good programming interview
>> The cost of failing to hire a good engineer is small

I'm not so sure about that.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jan_Koum

"In September 2007 Koum and Acton left Yahoo and took a year off, traveling around South America and playing ultimate frisbee. Both applied, and failed, to work at Facebook."

"On February 9, 2014 Zuckerberg asked Koum to have dinner at his home, and formally proposed Koum a deal to join the Facebook board - 10 days later Facebook announced it was acquiring WhatsApp for US$19 Billion USD."

tvelichkov··on Why I Choose Delphi
> it wasn't a bad environment to first learn programming.

Actually I think it's great, AFAIK, Pascal is meant to be a teaching tool for students.

tvelichkov··on How I learned to code in my 30s
You are 27 right now right? Your life has just started, what did you actually miss that you cannot do now?
tvelichkov··on How I learned to code in my 30s
Nah, I have 3yrs old son, but this does not stop me from trying to make living with something I love to do. I actually think that if you hate your job, but make good money, this will be worst for your family/kids, because you are gonna start bringing all this negative energy at home.
tvelichkov··on How I learned to code in my 30s
> I wouldn't write another line of code in my life.

I personally see this as a problem, having to do something I don't like.. for years... probably for life?

tvelichkov··on How I learned to code in my 30s
So you did learn programming, because you wanted a great paycheck 13 years later? Lol, that's just stupid. I advised everyone from my circle to stay away from programming unless they fell in love with it. It's pointless to be a programmer if you don't have it in your heart.

However, if you did enjoy, then there is nothing to be upset about, I mean you are doing what you love right? If its all about your paycheck you could try finding another employer, but not everything in this life should go around money, there are more important things, find people who could appreciate you and your values, be happy what you do and maybe the money will come later.

tvelichkov··on Facebook: greater than 15% of employees are H1Bs
So, we are not trying to make the word, a better place, just to "make America great again"? Good luck with that.
tvelichkov··on Why we should all have a basic income
>> If you combine that with the decreased motivation of people to work (resulting in lower supply)

You won't get lower supply because of the automation, because that's the reason you are giving basic income in the first place.

John no longer needs to drive it's truck, the truck is gonna drive itself.

tvelichkov··on Is Your Site Leaking Password Reset Links?
If you steal someones else password-reset link, change the password, then at the end of the day, won't you end up with a password, but missing email/username in order to log in? I mean the reset password link shouldn't reveal any other credentials about the account. (I know at some sites after reseting a password you may end up automatically logged in, but i think this is a bad practice).

For a first time I'm actually having fun playing against a computer :D.
tvelichkov··on 100M games played
1. You can't up your rating beating players 400+ rating below you. The ELO system just do not allow it, you are gonna start winning zero points per win.

2. Playing against stronger players is not that bad, this a way to became a stronger player.

tvelichkov··on 100M games played
"On Lichess, as far as I can tell, I have to scan the list of games, compare them to my rating (which I can't even see on the main screen, and don't trust at all since it swung +150 points on my first game..), and then pick from the list."

Or you can just host a game and wait for someone to find you?
