turs0und··on The tragedy of Ben Bernanke
Interesting, I didn't realize Bernanke's performance is considered a disappointment. It's interesting to read the phrase "full prosperity" used so casually; I guess there's a specific definition of that. It's pretty eye-opening to learn that the monetary base was expanded 4 times.

The biggest issue I have is that they're spending so much money, but everyone refuses to actually just give some of it to people in the form of a universal basic income. How hard would that be? And yet the benefits are huge for so many.

turs0und··on The Bugs Bunny Defense
Wow. This is mind-blowing.

I've actually seen the "No more buwwets" episode. I just can't imagine pointing a gun at someone and firing without having personally seen that there were no more bullets, unless you actually didn't care or wanted to kill them.

turs0und··on 2,000 year old 'computer' discovered: tech and shipwrecks are rewriting history
"Thanks to an intricate series of gears and dials, the mechanism could be used as a calendar, to track the phases of the moon, and to predict eclipses."

That's pretty crazy. It would be really cool to understand more about how it was created/who created it.

Not sure if it's so much rewriting history as demonstrating the extent to which we've filled in the blanks with guesses.

turs0und··on Electronically signable contract that lives in a single PHP file
That's pretty cool. It would be even cooler if it weren't PHP, though.
turs0und··on Dear Founders: “Listening” to Your Users Isn’t the Same as “Waiting to Talk”
Really insightful. I can definitely picture the person "listening" while they're really just waiting to sell the person on an idea once they've finished. Taking the mindset of true reflection, hearing something that you didn't want to hear and didn't expect, and then adjusting based on that is truly challenging.
turs0und··on 10 years ago Wikipedia was widely considered a doomed experiment
It's incredible to me how Encyclopedia Britannica just couldn't conceive of it being a legitimate thing. I think that really exemplifies how larger companies don't bother to compete with startups that end up destroying them.
turs0und··on Scientists find what controls waking up and going to sleep
This is pretty sweet. A lot of people get addicted to OTC sleep aides. Maybe this will lead to better, more targeted help for people with sleep problems, and not have them get addicted to things that don't even really help.
turs0und··on Why following software design best practices decreases code complexity
Nice concrete walkthrough of an otherwise abstract concept. I'm not sure the source of code complexity that I worry about most is the number of possible state transitions, but that does seem like a legitimate source of complexity.

It would be great if the article acknowledged that these design patterns help reduce complexity in other ways, like more macroscopic codebase structuring, as an example.

turs0und··on [dead]
Assuming they did not do it, does anyone know why Islamic militant groups claim responsibility for this stuff?
turs0und··on Why Tesla's Autopilot and Google's car are entirely different animals
"This is not a difference of degree, it is a difference of kind. It is why there is probably not an evolutionary path from the cruise/autopilot systems based on existing ADAS technologies to a real robocar."

Really interesting. I did not realize that.

turs0und··on The Unreliable Startup
This doesn't strike me as a problem. Large companies also shut down initiatives and projects, and everyone knows that startups are inherently risky, because they don't have a business model yet.
turs0und··on Still fuming over HTTPS mishap, Google makes Symantec an offer it can’t refuse
Wow, feel the Google wrath. My view of Symantec is that it's an over-the-hill tech company that has its hands deep enough in enough enterprise stuff that it stays alive. I'd love to see someone animate a video of Google battling Symantec...
turs0und··on Do One Thing
I don't mean this negatively, but I don't understand what point you're making...
turs0und··on After guilty plea, judge confused why prosecutors still want iPhone unlocked
Haha, nice
turs0und··on Snapchat’s new ‘scary’ privacy policy
Who knows, good old Microsoft may want to put more cash down than FB or others on an app that gave then a legit piece of millennial mobile activity.
turs0und··on Snapchat’s new ‘scary’ privacy policy
Quoted from article:

“You grant Snapchat a world-wide, perpetual, royalty-free, sublicensable, and transferable license to host, store, use, display, reproduce, modify, adapt, edit, publish, create derivative works from, publicly perform, broadcast, distribute, syndicate, promote, exhibit, and publicly display that content in any form and in any and all media or distribution methods,” the Terms of Service state.

This is what it takes for the company to start monetizing seriously. I certainly expected it. Facebook did this like 20 times.

turs0und··on Amazon Removes All Apple TV, Chromecast Listings from Its Website
Good old free enterprise competition! It's interesting that Amazon has decided that the strategic value of limiting access to these products by removing from Amazon is more valuable to them than the revenue and engagement from people purchasing them. Amazon Fire hasn't done well at all, so I'm not seeing the end-game.
turs0und··on After guilty plea, judge confused why prosecutors still want iPhone unlocked
It really blows your mind how it's all about the government trying to increase their power at the expense of everyone else.
turs0und··on Every Day I Want to Quit Social Media
Got rid of my facebook account a few years ago and haven't looked back since.
turs0und··on A selfie app with a time limit just got $100,000 from Tim Draper
The extent to which an app can add something that seems like a non-feature (it takes a selfie of the viewer's reaction) then try to build a business out of it is truly amazing to me. Wow.
turs0und··on Do One Thing
This feels like an over-simplification. Life doesn't fit into 4 quadrants, and the only thing models are guaranteed to do is be inaccurate. "One thing" and "well" are fundamentally subjective and based on a particular use-case. You have to focus on the problem(s) you're solving, and be disciplined about the scope of the problem(s) you're solving.
