turnerc··on IT companies warn in open letter: EU wants to ban encryption
> Sites in the UK seemingly get banned by everyone as soon as the government requests it

I live in the UK this is not correct, these are voluntary agreements by ISP's and you can opt out of the default filtering.

I think the only time something has been blocked here it was due to a Court Order: https://www.virginmedia.com/help/list-of-court-orders

turnerc··on IT companies warn in open letter: EU wants to ban encryption
> service provider level

I think the parent comment was going to mail such drives, and good luck getting the EU to agree on blocking anything on their independent providers level.

turnerc··on DIY plastic recyclers: open-source machines for shredding plastic [audio]
Yes there is a plastics waste problem, but the real problem is that it cannot be infinitely recycled in the current process that this is talking about.

Additionally at 03:25 The problem is hit on the head in another way, you still have to sort and clean the plastic before these machines can start.

turnerc··on Amazon 2020 Letter to Shareholders
> It's outside of our imagination to assume there are different stations

No but my naivety thought there would be more automation in place to reduce walking, sorting and picking up heavy things.

Granted I have not worked in a fulfilment center and my impressions are solely based on amazon's own material but they put out jobs for operatives that just stand there all day sorting small packets, moving from this to sorting incoming large pallets sounds like it would do more damage!

Edit: Thanks for the incorrect wikipedia page, how does compute resources come into play here? I'm not taking anything away from software that solves the nurses roster problem or applies simulated annealing, just merely quoting the source.

turnerc··on Amazon 2020 Letter to Shareholders
> We’re developing new automated staffing schedules that use sophisticated algorithms to rotate employees among jobs that use different muscle-tendon groups to decrease repetitive motion and help protect employees from MSD risks.

Glossing over the "sophisticated algorithms" part, this is a welcome read and it seems to be a great way of limiting healthcare costs for new hires, but I am concerned at how "rotational" are such jobs surely manual warehouse work would be pretty similar in muscle groups used?

turnerc··on Did you know you can put a whole game inside of a push notification
I cannot tell if this is satirical, I hope so.
turnerc··on [dead]
> Wall Street firms paid their New York City-based traders an average bonus of $184,000 last year.

I wonder in what proportion to salary.

In any case this article is just an outrage piece, since when does it make sense to track anything against trader bonuses?

turnerc··on Google is exploring a health record tool for patients
They did and retired it 4 years later saying they couldn't turn "limited usage into widespread adoption in the daily health routines of millions of people"[0].

People didn't like the idea then, and I'm not sure they will adopt it this time around...

turnerc··on Court rules grocery store’s inaccessible website isn’t an ADA violation
> Don't write off accessibility as something too hard to implement

For a lot of these websites it would necessitate a lot of manual work, the unfortunate reality is that although producing accessibility features is not 'hard' it can be time consuming and most corporates won't go for it.

turnerc··on Generational changes pressure CEOs to take up political activism
Correct would be subjective
turnerc··on The West’s Crisis of Academic Freedom
> gender studies has been denied accreditation as an academic course

And for good reason, it lacks academic rigour to be awarded as a standalone degree.

> Orwellian gesture > install a Free Speech and Academic Freedom Champion

These two cannot be compared, I'm sorry but I doubt the author here has read the proposed measures, the position to be established does not have regulator power of speech but more of a guardian whom can investigate alleged breaches.

turnerc··on Malfrats/xeuledoc: Fetch information about a public Google document
Nifty but also likely against ToS, given there is an API key tacked onto the request to clients6.google.com.

Also this information is available publicly using googleapis.com/drive/{v2,v3}/files/fileId

turnerc··on Launch HN: Stacksi (YC W21) – Doing Security Questionnaires, So Your Team Isn't
Damn these security questionnaires are a pain and I appreciate this product, might not be best to feature Anthem on your frontpage about a security related product though...

Additionally I'd be a little wary of handing off all my documentation to a third-party how do you protect this?

turnerc··on Palantir: NHS faces legal action over data firm contract
Imprisoning unwitting employees... that's a new low
turnerc··on Palantir: NHS faces legal action over data firm contract
It's certainly possible to do, whether or not the controls are in place to prevent re-identification is a different matter...

The document I linked says they do have these controls in place but having done my fair slog in the NHS I'm doubtful.

turnerc··on Palantir: NHS faces legal action over data firm contract
It's worth nothing that the Datastore in question has undergone a Data Protection Impact assessment[1] which states that this information Palantir has access to will be in anonymised form and even aggregated.

In fact its non-anonymised data never hits the "Datastore" (Palantir Foundry) or leaves NHS Systems.

Morally sketchy extension to the contract? Yes. Illegal? No.

Edit: Corrected Palantir will have access to data, not be given it.

turnerc··on Launch HN: GreaseBoss (YC W21) – Real-time system to manage industrial greasing
Congrats on the launch looks like a solid and interesting product, Is there other hardware besides the head unit and RFID tags that I would need to make accommodations for? Most of the sites I visit barely have cellular reception.

Can the head unit be used without the RFID tags, for example in an environment where re-fitting a zerk can take place on the next maintenance window?

turnerc··on Element – All-in-one secure chat app for teams, friends and organisations
I guess this was meant for https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=25719796 ? :)
turnerc··on Update on YouTube copyright dispute over guitar tutorials [video]
I think it's more that he was earning income from the guitar tabs, since the original song is copyrighted would it not count as a derivative work?
turnerc··on Ask HN: Google Drive/Office 365 alternatives
Microsoft partners with TechSoup to validate charity status, this is their UK affiliate
turnerc··on Gitlab Support is no longer processing MFA resets for free users
> Even crypto exchanges allow recovery if you lose all traditional recovery

Yes, and Crypto exchanges are a paid product so they would be able to provide this additional support.

turnerc··on iRobot's New Education Robot Makes Learning to Code a Little More Affordable
I completely agree here, it seems like they are just playing into education's concept of code=STEM job, or maybe it's a new Roomba recruitment drive...
turnerc··on iRobot's New Education Robot Makes Learning to Code a Little More Affordable
Unfortunately I am yet to see evidence of these new "coding robots" actually providing educational benefit, they seem to be more of a distraction from the fundamentals of maths and science, and an even greater burden on an already stretched education system budget.

Perhaps children aged 6 should be focused on reading and writing rather than worrying about Moravec's paradox on a $200 bleeping pile of plastic.

turnerc··on Stack Overflow gets series E funding for $85M
> This is an exciting inflection point in our company’s history as we accelerate the realization of our mission

If your first line of a financing announcement is this, then I do wonder if SO has lost touch with who their target audience is.

I also struggle to see where the value actually comes from, if tomorrow all of the top 1% of posters stopped then their leverage to promote other lineups is dead.

It's a shame to say it but its another case of VC overvaluation

turnerc··on Ask HN: How do you keep proper posture while seated?
The NHS guidance[1] on this has been helpful, but I think a key factor is being aware of your posture slouching, which is where taking breaks is vital so you can re-adjust.

turnerc··on Ask HN: HN Invaded by Mass Media?
I'm not sure how facebook.com is considered mass media in your example, the link is to their AI research microsite.

Bloomberg has around 20k HN listings[1], of which a majority are around technical topics or relating to scientific/technical topics i.e patents or law which are valuable to HN community, granted some of them are duplicates and possibly spam but I wouldn't rule out clicking on one.

turnerc··on Neuralink Live Stream [video]
Their projection dates seem a little far fetched, to have a clinical trial by 2020 without yet having started an FDA process
turnerc··on Suicide prevention: large scale and small details
This paper highlights that it had positive effects for those who had a previous hospitalisation with a suicide attempt, a study[1] also shows that 26 % classed as MA's (more than one attempt) regret their recovery opposed to 7% with a single attempt, so I get your point but these decisions are often not thought out and made rashly.
