In other words, can you really have BI without universal health care?

What are tech jobs in Kelowna? I can't imagine there are many tech jobs there at all. Or at least any tech jobs there that pay more than 30% of a similar job in major US cities, let alone SV.
turar··on FBI raids dental software researcher who discovered patient data on FTP server
It was FBI though, so it was at federal level?

Most of the improvements are superficial, apart from medicine maybe.

- Housing

- Education

- Quality of jobs

- Career growth

- Job security

These are less accessible than 30-40 years ago, while surely you can enjoy the magic of Facebook on your shiny iPhone, which were admittedly unavailable then.

There are ten tech cities in Canada? I thought there were like ten cities in total. :)

The US Attorney is widely believed to be loosely based on Preet Bharara. This is a good recent profile: http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2016/05/09/the-man-who-ter...

>> So I end up paying twice for each item I buy? Nice.

Not if you believe that you underpaid for it in the first place.

>> My experience is that clothes and particularly shoes that I buy which were manufactured in Europe

I was under impression that those were not available to you from your earlier posts. In that case, you can simply choose to pay more for European clothes of higher quality, so not sure what the problem is.

turar··on Being a Developer After 40
You can always go the extra effort to locate the factory workers who make your clothes and start sending them money directly. You have that choice too.

But back to your original point, do you believe that a shirt made in England that you would pay twice the amount of money for, would be 2 times higher quality than a shirt made in Bangladesh?

turar··on Japan's Growing Poverty Defies Glib Explanations
I'm curious, why would treating everyone as if they're equals make you run away to Japan?

Moreover, the person you'd be lying to couldn't care less if you're lying or not. The person is most likely paid by the hour and is counting down hours to clock out and go home.

It also probably had to do with religion. The US was heavily religious compared to the Soviet block. And religion usually puts women in their place behind men.
turar··on Nearly half of Americans would have trouble finding $400 to pay for an emergency
There's a large number of people that believe it's not their fault, e.g. comments here http://www.metafilter.com/158762/The-Secret-Shame-of-Middle-...
turar··on Nearly half of Americans would have trouble finding $400 to pay for an emergency
I'd imagine the difference between a highly and a lowly ranked school is more than an SAT prep course.
turar··on Nearly half of Americans would have trouble finding $400 to pay for an emergency
I'd imagine students at lower ranked schools had lower SATs scores, and thus didn't get to similar colleges.

turar··on The Problem with Electric Vehicles
Can somebody explain how are EV, and especially Tesla, batteries different from, say, my laptop batteries, which normally degrade to the point of being unusable within 4-5 years, and have to be replaced?
turar··on Will minimum wage hikes lead to a huge boost in automation? Only if we're lucky
A poor person has no Netflix, and doesn't have time for YouTube, she is either clocked in on the job, sitting in traffic to pick up kids from school, or cooking dinner. Besides, that kind of mindless passive entertainment is vastly inferior to what monarch had access to -- hunting, horseback riding, live music and shows, sex, etc. See pharke's response above regarding cheap processed foods.

This has a good overview of a routine day in the life of a monarch. It's nothing like bad meat and oatmeal. https://www.quora.com/What-was-daily-life-like-for-a-medieva...
turar··on Will minimum wage hikes lead to a huge boost in automation? Only if we're lucky
What's that number? Not even out of single digits? That's rich indeed, considering the entire history of the 20th century is that of successful foreign capitalist intervention, starting all the way with the Russian revolution.

No matter how bloody the communists were, my original point was that it was never done in an environment without active foreign involvement of undermining, destabilization, and outright warfare.

turar··on The Immobile Masses: Why Traffic Is Awful and Public Transit Is Worse
Yeah, Toronto is much better than most North American cities, but it's not perfect by any means, at least if one is to believe r/toronto. :)

Regarding car ownership, yes, you can always tax car registrations and gasoline way higher and spend the extra money to add more frequent service, retrofit car lanes into bus-only lanes/streets, add bike lanes, and lower fares.

turar··on The Immobile Masses: Why Traffic Is Awful and Public Transit Is Worse
It's a factor of poor public transit. Imagine walking out of your house, walking 3 minutes to the nearest bus stop, waiting at most 5 minutes for the next bus, and then not worrying about any congestion until you're at work.

If you miss the bus, the next one will be there in 10 minutes. If you don't want to wait for 10 minutes, another bus that will take a slightly different route and cause you to walk an extra 7 minutes from bus stop to your destination, will be there in 3 minutes.

Unfortunately most Americans have never experienced anything close to that level of public transit, and cannot imagine cities functioning like that.
