tumdum_··on What Zig felt like, coming from Rust
Each one makes me update my estimate slightly in favour of AI. Also, pangram agrees.
tumdum_··on Dystopian Surveillance Is Becoming a Reality
Exactly, they are *hated* for it. Afaik, I haven’t met anyone live streaming in my boring real life.
tumdum_··on Dystopian Surveillance Is Becoming a Reality
That’s simply not possible with the announced Apple products. Afaict, Apple will let people save *transcripts* of last 15s and save *summaries* of transcripts.
tumdum_··on Dystopian Surveillance Is Becoming a Reality
It’s been 20 years since first iphone, this is nothing new. And somehow people are not recording everyone all the time.

tumdum_··on Poland now 6th-largest EU economy, ahead of Switzerland and Belgium
It tells you little about living conditions but it tells you a lot about importance of a country as a whole. GDP per capita of China might be far from US but due to its size it still makes China very important actor.

tumdum_··on U.S. economy lost 23,000 jobs in July, a sudden reversal
So you are saying that they cherrypicked some obscure illnesses to make Europe look good? They used data for:

- infant mortality

- maternal mortality

- colon and breast cancer survival

- heart attack mortality

- childhood acute lymphocytic leukemia (most common childhood cancer)

Those are one of the most common health issues.

Also, here is another recent paper showing how it’s better (health care wise) to be average in EU than wealthy in US: https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMsa2408259

tumdum_··on U.S. economy lost 23,000 jobs in July, a sudden reversal
They are looking at the outcomes of specific procedures because they are interested in the health care system quality. Looking at things like life expectancy would make it impossible to disentangle them from other factors like lifestyle or environment.

Is google still a big contributor to the c++ standard? I thought they are far less involved than a decade ago.
tumdum_··on Kimi K3: Open Frontier Intelligence
I'm not sure how true is this claim about weak environmental laws. I don't have any data to back this up, but I was in China in 2013 and two years ago and the difference in air quality in major cities is staggering. So, maybe they destroy the environment but for sure they no longer do that near the big cities.
tumdum_··on Are we offloading too much of our thinking to AI?
Reading a book is a way to peek into author's mind. There is nothing to peek into when the book is generated by llm.

tumdum_··on Google Books (or similar) all book scans – $200k bounty (2025)
If no issue there, then why would you ask who is behind it in a public forum?
tumdum_··on The deadly rise of giant trucks and SUVs
Did you know that only 1,6% of US population works in agriculture compared to 5% in Portugal? See https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/employmen...
tumdum_··on The deadly rise of giant trucks and SUVs
I think that in Europe the trend is in the other direction: https://ec.europa.eu/commission/presscorner/detail/en/ip_26_... - e.g. -15% since 2019.
