Not a designer? Here’s how to make your web apps look awesome
A) Please hire a designer. You might hire someone who is not very costly and fits your budget but I cannot over emphasize the value someone who does this day in day out brings to the table.
OR
B) If you were a designer and wanted to build something, what would you do? Use one of the million ready made coding junks like "Digg Template" or "Twitter template"? No you know very well that innovation does not work that ways. You would pick up a book and learn to program or find someone who knows it and will help you.
Just because "everybody" thinks they can design or make things "look" good, it does not mean it is design. Read a few books like the following to get started:
1)The Design Of Everyday Things by Donald A. Norman, Don Norman (basics of design)
2)Visual Grammar by Christian Leborg (basics of visual design)
3)Stop Stealing Sheep & Find Out How Type Works by Erik Spiekermann (typography)
4)Don't Make Me Think!: A Common Sense Approach To Web Usability by Steve Krug (basics of UX)
5)Understanding Comics by Scott Mccloud (basics of storytelling- useful in web interfaces too)
6)The Visual Display Of Quantitative Informations by Edward R. Tufte (useful in information design and dashboards)
If you have read them and want to learn more, please feel free to contact via my HN Profile.
Are not they gaining two days in the 5 day week. Just like US-India, there is always somebody from the company working and available due to the 12-13 hour gap.
Design is NOT about the way things look or for that matter even work. Design is about that inherent way of thinking that makes you question, understand and then perform actions. So yes, if you are actually good with graphic design at a fundamental level, you are also good with web or iOS or any other new screen devices where elements need to be arranged and form a visual relation.
If there is any one designer who says they are good with mobile design and not web or vice versa, beware, either the person does not their own potential or does not get design.
Designing for any medium has their own constraints and designing for that medium is designing within those constraints.
— Massimo Vignelli.
This helps because even if in hindsight, I would know if the comment was the general consensus or a popular one or not?
Also I love the discussion in this post since, when with Georgify (http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=2410195) I had tried first to seperate the upvotes with points of a comment, everyone (and yes a blanket term) had said it was a wrong thing to the extent that I had to make changes.
Of course it is not my site to make decisions for the users of the site, but still almost a dual reaction when the same decision was taken on HN by two different people in a very nearby time span, one being me (for Georgify) and the other being PG himself (for HN).
Ok I tried the product and here are my suggestions:
1) Use Google Connect/Yahoo or something so that you can access my Contacts list
2) It is the same as opening a browser window with email app since the contacts are not there already or shown in a dropdown.
3)The problem is not that I have to move away from the page to share it. The pain comes in moving away and doing stuff. If I have to move away to find that one email id, it is of no use.
4) Who would save Contacts in a seperate list? No CSV Upload is not the solution.

Also I will give it a shot and suggest if there is something that can be improved (at least from an experience perspective). You can of course take it or ignore it too.
If you are just a great hacker, you CANNOT be the next thing. If you are just a designer, you CANNOT be the next big thing. And likewise.
Assumption: You do not have a team/cofounder that/who compliments your skills totally and share the same vision.
If No, then why the distinction (did not want to use discrimination).
This was something ideally Google should have come up with but never mind!
Also a point to note is the device these are on (iPhones and iPads) is making them accessible to these, so saying "without consent" seems like the wrong word. The device will have that information by default and nature of it being the middle layer.
Why Apple is putting it in an unencrypted format is a different story altogether.
Also the major USP is that Dropbox behaves just like a folder on the OS and not a seperate entity.
What if they are able to have cheaper subscription rates for shows (entire season, maybe?), entire NFL season etc. I chose what I watch and when I watch and the experience can hardly get any better.
Of course I am not saying that iTunes is at its peak of innovation, but just saying that perhaps Apple is not bringing innovation to TV but bringing TV to a host of innovative devices.
For me every bit of TV watching happens online and I would like to believe that that is the trend the industry is witnessing. What else defines YouTube buying rights for streaming live IPL matches for India, a country where TV sets definitely outshine the web streamers.
