tuhin··on Georgify: Make Hacker News More Readable
Hey all. I created this over two years ago.

I created this for myself, which means it is highly opinionated. Some will love it and others will hate it and that's ok. I have been using it for the last two years and there is no way I can go back to the old HN. That said it is equally possible that most of you do not like it as much. And really that is fine. There are more important things for us to argue about. :)

Feel free to reach out at tuhin @ me.com or ping @tuhin on twitter in case you guys have more constructive feedback.

tuhin··on Introducing Pulse for Web
1) It is not black it is #111 :) 2) Rules in design are meant to be broken. It is good to know the rules nevertheless, so that you know which ones to break.
tuhin··on Introducing Pulse for Web
The biggest reason of all, it lets you sync sources across all devices. Sync saved stories. Notification and communication take a backseat when you can easily send push notification to a much larger audience that is your entire userbase. Just thought it was important to mention that.
tuhin··on Being a Developer Makes You Valuable. Learning How to Market Makes You Dangerous
I would really extend this to the following qualities that people in the field of building products should try, to the best of their abilities, to be good at. They might not become the best at each one, but enough to become potent and in the very least better than they were before trying:

-Understand technology. What it takes to build, scale, maintain and fix things. What are the affordances and benefits of one approach over the other.

-Understand design. Not just pretty pixels (in fact that is the least important part, IMHO). But the WHY. How it affects people, what the goals are, why the current system is broken or why it does not exist.

- Understand Marketing. How do you convince others that your product (idea or finished) is THE one they should vouch for. Why should they invest time and money into it. How can you make them believe that you know what you are doing and better than any bad experiences they have had with products of that kind. Selling/Marketing is not evil. It is a necessary (evil). Many humble and smart people fail to understand that.

I totally understand it is very hard for one person to be great or even good at all three. But hey most don't even try, so you are already better then them the first day you try.

tuhin··on Show HN: I love weird socks and I'm finally launching my lifestyle business
Hey, Really nice initiative. Some quick feedback.

- I would really improve the quality of socks. Especially design wise. I would have subscribed in an instant but then looked at the lineup and was dissapointed.

- Lifestyle business is as much about the experience as it is about the product. Make me feel happy. Everlane is one of the best online experiences I have seen. Especially since you have a simple proposition and only one product to sell you can do a lot in the experience factor without making things unusable.

- Use better product photography

-I love the "How it Works" part

- I think you are already doing but use your blog as the bandwagon for raising awareness and interests in socks. Maybe even push content from other sites about socks? Like this one? http://www.nytimes.com/2012/02/05/fashion/in-silicon-valley-...

Feel free to ping me @tuhin for more design related and experience feedback

tuhin··on They may just be chat bubbles, but they’re our chat bubbles
To be honest, when you start designing generic icons like Messages/chat, things start to get pretty hazy. But I like how Hipchat is taking this as a chance to create a better icon.

Also to play devil's advocate, the blue is the an evolution of the Hipchat blue, and the stripes an addition from the Messages/iMessages icons on iOS.

tuhin··on Show HN: My weekend project Parallax.js
Try using something more colorful like a landscape or bokeh so that the perception of parallax feels natural and impactful. I had totally missed the parallax had it not been for the comments here.

tuhin··on App Engine charges $6,500 to update a ListProperty on 14.1 million entities
For those questioning the use of Google App engine as a serious platform for applications, we at Pulse use Google App Engine: http://googleappengine.blogspot.com/2011/11/scaling-with-kin...

So, yes you can build serious applications on GAE but like everything else it boils down to, it depends on what you really need.

tuhin··on Why I’m scared of the post-PC era.
So essentially the promise and dream of the post-PC era comes at the cost of killing the current golden age of Computers? I would say we are being hyperbolic here.

For what it is worth I, (and I know of so many other people) have an iPad but end up spending my entire time (around 10-12 hours everyday) in front of a Mac. This is not going to change anytime in the near future because quite frankly the iPad is just not capable of doing all that I want to do on a "computer".

So yes. there is a post-PC era, but think of it as a new species that co-exists than an evolution that simply eliminates the last one.

tuhin··on Steve's Google Platform rant
what prevents A players from hiring B and C players They know it will not end up good for anybody. Also they understand hiring another A player or if possible an A++ player is good for overall health of the company.

prevents B players from hiring A players Ego and in a big corporation, the fear of the hire going ahead of you.

Also another deadly combination is the B player who hires another A player thinking they themselves are A+ player and spoils the fun for everybody.

tuhin··on Hacker News Front Page Snapshot from Last Night
If this is in reply to Tim Berners Lee writing the web on a NeXt, it is not false. He also went to Paris to a conference to show Steve the stuff with his black NeXt. Unfortunately he (Tim) was at the end of the line and Steve had to leave before seeing his "web". Actually if I recall, since then, Tim never met Steve until very recently or perhaps they have never met.
tuhin··on Color.com Pivots to Live Personal Broadcasting
Why on earth:

1) Does the Facebook blocker block the page from anything to load. Weird. 2) Does Color.com ask for SO many permission. I mean allow Color may mark notifications as read?

Why? Am I missing something?

tuhin··on Spotify now requires a Facebook account to sign up.
Yes it is part of the premium model. Offline playlists and mobile sync of those as well as other playlists is too. Sad to see them using the Facebook in such a short sighted fashion. They had till now been my best music service, not sure anymore.
tuhin··on I was once a Facebook fool

tuhin··on Facebook Timeline
You will not be disappointed then by what we are cooking up.
tuhin··on Facebook Timeline
Well it is not the happiest day of my life. I first had this idea when I was looking at these pics on my hard drive and mobile that were years old and yet I had never shared them anywhere because they were just private bits of my life. That is when I read more about it and laid my hands on "Total Recall" and that gave a whole new dimension to the idea.

I am kind of sad actually when I realise that when in say a month from now I launch the product, people would think it was inspired by FB or is atleast something similar.

That said I think merging apps and everything else out there is a bit tricky since what you end up remembering about your life are moments by people and cherishing the experiences. Not by what song you are listening to, what movies you watched and stuff. Or maybe that is just for the emotionally bent folks like me. So we will see how people respond to what is essentially a very natural way to cherish our lives.

tuhin··on Facebook Timeline
This in short is a great piece of design. Especially coming out of facebook this is amazing (well they now have one of the most talented designers so not that surprising).

However, as a business this is killer and shrewd. Everyone would want to save a log of their life. More app permissions to add to timeline > more auto posts in ticker > more connection for Facebook.

Well played!

Disclosure: I am working on something similar as a place for all the memories of your life (http://momment.com) so the above text comes in view of having actually thought about this problem for months now.

tuhin··on Remembering a relationship, one chat at a time
We are trying to bring together the past and the present (realtime) memories together with http://momment.com

Other great example is http://1000memories.com but this is more of analog memories to digital artifacts as far as I see.

tuhin··on Hiring a designer is a premature optimization
FWIW I am fairly comfortable in setting up Django so despite that there are a thousand things beyond the gettting it to run. Things like DB, hell even the basic DB choice. For a current project I along with the developer (my brother) realised that we were better off using MongoDB than use MySQL for our quick random features in very near future.

Again I cannot imagine doing this without a developer. At the same time things like Product Design and User Experience (note I am not even touching User Interface- which is what ou get with templates) require a certain level of detail that are perhaps better served by a designer who does this day in day out.

It appears that the general consensus is that just getting it out there is good enough reason to call it an MVP. I think this post from 37Signals nails it down as to what happens to user experience in an MVP http://37signals.com/svn/posts/2963-what-happens-to-user-exp...

tuhin··on Hiring a designer is a premature optimization
If you know how to use photoshop, you can design.

Wow.

tuhin··on Hiring a designer is a premature optimization
So essentially using a similar logic, if I am a designer, I am better off using a scripting tool to make Facebook Clone than hire a developer?

I know this comes off as an arrogant comment but I am drawing the logic straight from your arguments here.

A developer cannot design so the best option they have is to use templates of design created with no clear audience, and goal other than probably looking good (which is not in the least way what design is about).

Similarly, then if I am a designer then I should just use free scripts that let me make a social networking clone or delicious clone for my next project, right?

tuhin··on TechCrunch As We Know It May Be Over
Liking Arrington and reading TC have no logical correlation, as far as I see.

No.

But it helps if people show interest. It is one of the many directional metric that you can use to gauge to understand what of your 10 ideas you have every week should you invest more time in.

And no, it does not mean you have a sign up page for 10 of them. :) Highly recommend Eric Ries' Lean Startup Video/Book.

tuhin··on Who Does Facebook Think You Are Searching For?
My list is all random. The first entry is my girlfriend, the next though is a random girl from college whose profile I have hardly visited more than say 4-5 times ever on Facebook. Same for others down the list.

So is it something were people are apparently assuming that it is onto something because they can see those 2 names they do not want anyone to know about among the 10 being in the top or is the result for everyone actually correct?

In the case of the latter how is it so random for me? I have Michael Arrington on the top 15 and I swear I do not stalk his profile.

At least care to dig around before making such a sweeping statement.

-This was not uncompensated market research statement. -We are 30 days away from first wave of access invites. -We don't do nothing.

PS: I just went through your comments and it made me realise why you would make such a statement.
