tudorachim··on Introducing Google Building Maker
It's true, but since everybody has access to the test images (so they can label them), and the models (through google earth), it seems like anybody can train whatever algorithm they want on the same set.
tudorachim··on FMS: Spam-proof anonymous message boards on Freenet
"It is likely that the necessity to pull from the outbox of every user will only scale to a limited point, however FMS is being actively developed, and it is likely that these problems can be overcome in due course."

Those are some famous last words...

tudorachim··on Ask HN: What was the worst bug you've ever solved ?
I'm not sure how the example could make the assertion fail; I think that the point is that if 3.3 is treated as a long double by the compiler, then the result of x*3.3 will be a long double, which is more precise than the double returned by foo; but, regardless of how bar1 and bar2 are compiled, they both make a call to foo() which returns a double. Is it the case then that the behavior depends on how foo is compiled? I don't see how else the 80-bit result could propagate to the test for equality.
tudorachim··on My GMail password scares me with its power
Although you're right that websites might have access if you use the same password for everything, in this case even if you use all different passwords, you're completely blown if somebody gets the gmail password, because they can just reset all the other ones.
tudorachim··on The Last Days of the Polymath
This is true; one of the points the article was making is that the current definition of polymath is much weaker than the one we had even a hundred years ago. The GP is probably referring to that one.
tudorachim··on Poll: Change the name of computer science to informatics?
Since this is an opinion poll, it should have the "It doesn't matter" option. That's the one I'd go for.
tudorachim··on [dead]
You don't need to; change the Authorised=false in the url to Authorised=true.
tudorachim··on Amazingly detailed motorbike model
Are there supposed to be pictures on this page? None load for me.
tudorachim··on Conferences
I don't know what the point of going to a conference is, if you can get videos of the talks afterwards, like TED.
tudorachim··on Create Python GUIs using HTML (And Webkit and GTK)
I was under the impression that time.sleep'ing all over the place was the only way to let threads do their work in python because that's one of the few ways to release the GIL. Is there some other way to get this done (that doesn't involve C modules)?
tudorachim··on OK, it’s a pandemic. Now what?
How did you manage to translate "Although rare, severe respiratory illness (pneumonia) and deaths have been reported with flu infections in children" to such a broad, absolute statement like "you have fever, headaches, sore throat, but one week later, you die."

Did you even read the page you linked to?

tudorachim··on Python Autocompletion for Vim, Emacs and TextMate
Do you happen to know if there exists something like this for vim?
tudorachim··on Video 2.0: Tiny Cameras Watching (Over) You
The fact that you don't have to provide a social security number doesn't say anything about the privacy guaranteed by flickr; if they keep logs of IPs, uploaders can be traced by location, which can often be mapped to a specific person.
tudorachim··on Ask HN: Please Review our App: Weatherbike.com
With NoScript enabled, this happens:

ActionController::InvalidAuthenticityToken in IndexController#index

tudorachim··on Sun is cooling down and what that means for us
Oh, come on. There's the good kind of can-do attitude, which is useful, and then this kind, where if you think you want something enough, anything can happen.

Consider how much effort had to go into just putting a man on the moon, and compare that to the effort required to affect the fundamental energy processes of a body in which one million Earths can fit. The two problems are many, many orders of magnitude apart. Affecting the Sun in a noticeable way is well out of our reach now, and with high probability will be for the next millennium.

EDIT: I'm full of shit, it's 1 million

tudorachim··on Apple's Mac OS X update breaks Perl

tudorachim··on Ask HN: Has anybody observed cheating?
The instructor for our discrete math class has a most hilarious way of catching cheaters: he sets up trap sites regarding the problems that he googlebombs to be on the front page of the results. Every student signed a document at the beginning stating that they acknowledged googling for solutions was cheating, but 20/195 people still managed to be caught cheating on the first assignment.
tudorachim··on Academics: Why it's faster, more lucrative, and fun to do startups
Not that the actual research part has paid off, but companies like Anybots have been much more successful in their bipedal research efforts (see Dexter @ http://anybots.com/abouttherobots.html) than many academic labs, much less other companies.
tudorachim··on Obama's Presidential Limo Will Be a 'Rolling Tank With Windows'
This sounds pretty cool, but it seems like this is a waste of money. I can't remember there ever being an attack on a president while he was in an enclosed limo (but I'm going from memory, haven't looked it up), and the previous one seems to have been enough of a deterrent. Washington, D.C. isn't exactly a warzone that requires a tank.
tudorachim··on I'm using Git because it makes me feel cool
Did I miss the content? He seemed to be responding to "all those people" who claim git users are all fanboys, but the whole thing just comes off as a crappy attempt at sarcasm.
tudorachim··on Prius used as an emergency generator
I find it hard to believe that they actually advocated using hybrids to give power back to a smart grid. The idea behind "giving back power" is to use renewable sources installed around the home, not to burn gas in a place that is not a power station.
tudorachim··on Japanese Girl Sensation: Virtual Boyfriends (Webkare)
No, I don't think so. I think there is entertainment, like reading a good book, or listening to good music, that is worth something because it ... helps you in some way, and entertainment like digg, which is just a complete time sink.

This essay by Neal Stephenson puts it into words better than I can: http://www.nytimes.com/2005/06/17/opinion/17stephenson.html

tudorachim··on Japanese Girl Sensation: Virtual Boyfriends (Webkare)
People simply wanting it doesn't make it important or useful in objective terms. Diggers, for example, really keep up with the service, even though a) almost all of the stories are a waste of time and b) almost all of the commenters are hilariously misinformed, to put it politely.
tudorachim··on Five reasons why iPhone is still the best thing invented this year
Yup, they evolved past the graphical user interface :).
tudorachim··on [dead]
Arc - new programming languages are released too often and too quickly (stiffx)
tudorachim··on MIT replacing Scheme with Python for Intro CS class
