tudelo··on Ask HN: Startup failed after years of work – Can I even get a job now?
Not sure how you could go 8 months and fail problems like that. Maybe after a month or two you should have focused a bit more on what the interviews are looking for...
tudelo··on Ask HN: How often should we deploy to production?
With feature flags, do you just phase out the flags later? Is that ever a messy process?
tudelo··on Ask HN: How can I learn how to paint?
I watched the first link. My first thought is that a pool makes for a very strange meeting space, especially for digital art. I know, pretty complex analysis.
tudelo··on Airbnb to Acquire HotelTonight
To be fair, I have used HotelTonight for day of booking and it had a better deal than I could get through any other location online for a very nice hotel.
tudelo··on Ask HN: Where can I find a job that matters?
Well... As unpopular as it is to some, many government or government contracting jobs are definitely jobs that matter.

It is interesting that you place a high value on Tesla when they are not even the affordable EV option. Is it the self driving aspect? Honestly curious what Tesla may be doing that other EV manufacturers really are not (other than being used as a status symbol).

Maybe I misinterpreted what "matters" means to you. I guess you mean a high valued position to a company? I originally interpreted it as a role with positive impact to society.

tudelo··on Tesla owners protest over drastic price cuts
There are cars newer than 60 years old that appreciate :). Of course, they do not usually appreciate past retail, but they appreciate relative to the lowest historical cost.
tudelo··on Unmutual friend: How Charles Dickens tried to place his wife in an asylum
I was not making a comparison.

And also scary is the reverse where everything you do when you're 12 now is likely going to be archived forever.
tudelo··on Ask HN: What Is Your Most Vivid Memory from the Dotcom Boom?
This might be one of the only times where it is acceptable to slow down and marvel. I can't imagine how terrible that felt for those guys...
tudelo··on Notes from Malcolm Gladwell's Writing Masterclass
A Ted talk about what is wrong with Ted talks. Amazing.
tudelo··on Introduction to Algotrading (2011) [pdf]
How would you even become a 'Tier One' mathematician? What does that entail?
tudelo··on My Notes on How to Start a Startup by YC
"It is also not socially acceptable to be in something just for the money unless it is wall street."

I'm not sure if I can agree with that. In general that may be true, but I would have to say most people do something they don't like 'just for the money' at some point in their life. Something like working as a kid for minimum wage in a store. It's most likely that you are just working there for money.

tudelo··on Ask HN: Studying DS/Algorithms will turn me in a better Developer?
If you want to work at Big4/5/whatever, you need to do a lot of leetcode or be naturally talented at solving algorithmic problems. It's not as hard as you think, though. Google, for example, really does not ask many leetcode "hard" questions IME. It depends on where you are looking to interview. In general, the most you really need to know is graph traversal algorithms like BFS and DFS and know data structures well. Basic implementations can be bruteforced, and to further optimize you can do things like sliding window algorithms or two pointer algorithms. Dynamic programming usually will not come up. Memoization is something you should know how to do though, and usually is a pretty natural optimization.

Of course, if you don't want to work at companies that do leetcode style interviews, there is no point in going much further than knowing data structures well and knowing basic algorithms (probably learn a sort better than bubble sort though... merge sort is pretty easy). You should know about trees, but I really doubt if you are applying for a company with sane hiring practices they will ever ask you to implement auto balancing trees.

In my experience interviewing with non-leetcode style interviews, I did get a lot more language trivia. For example, for a position primarily using Java, they ask about polymorphism, final vs finally, stuff like that. On onsites the focus is a lot more on STAR, past experience, and designing things. I personally actually like the former style of interview :)

tudelo··on Finding Kafka’s throughput limit in Dropbox infrastructure
That seems... like a lot. Thanks for the link.
tudelo··on Ask HN: Top three questions for a startup before accepting a job offer?
First one is going to have to be engineering.
tudelo··on Google: Oracle Java win will kill software development, so SCOTUS must rule
As someone who has recently tried Rust and uses Java in his day job, why do you think that Rust is the obvious successor? Wouldn't C# be a better fit for people looking to leave Java?
tudelo··on Ask HN: How to learn to write a compiler and interpreter?
You may be interested in this https://beautifulracket.com/stacker/intro.html. At the end you have a small interpreter that can handle math. There are further tutorials on https://beautifulracket.com to expand it. This is probably the most approachable option.
tudelo··on Pharo 7.0 released
Any good Pharo demos that you can recommend?
tudelo··on Ask HN: What was your worst personal financial mistake?
I would recommend playing around with https://www.firecalc.com/ as it seems to be a pretty customizable calculator.
tudelo··on Ask HN: Which audiobooks did/do you like?
I will second the Brandon Sanderson recommendation.
tudelo··on What Happens to Kid Culture When Streets Are Closed to Cars
The only way I could see this happening is with really damaging speed bumps every car length.
tudelo··on What Happens to Kid Culture When Streets Are Closed to Cars
6 mph... yeah. About that. People in the US don't really go the speed limit even in a 25mph zone so I don't know how well that will work. The only time I see people generally going the speed limit is in areas with speed tracking cameras.
tudelo··on Ask HN: Books you plan to read in 2019?
Any thoughts on their humble bundle?
tudelo··on Great Wall Motor unveils $9k electric urban car with nearly 200-mile range
Yet he said the crown vic has "reinforced doors due to being a former detective's car." Also, are fires really that much of a worry when you get in an accident? I have seen very little of that happening... More likely probably that your alternator causes a fire.
tudelo··on Epic Games banked a $3B profit in 2018
Of course there are games that already have proven this, most notably League of Legends (which is also mentioned in the article).

To all who click this... please be careful of your sound level before you do. The game right as it started loading made an extremely loud noise and scared me half to death.
tudelo··on Ask HN: Where do you go to request code reviews?
One place that can be useful is https://codereview.stackexchange.com/ . Of course, I think that the idea is not to post 500 lines and say "review pls", but I have seen some very thorough reviews there. It's likely you can distill a couple parts of your app down and get a decent review.
tudelo··on Show HN: Egeria, a multidimensional spreadsheet for everybody
To be fair there are SOME tools for reading netCDF files (there is netCDF4 for python for example) but it's not all that great out of the box, you have to write your own method to walk through all variables etc... kind of a pain. ncdump also.
tudelo··on Show HN: Egeria, a multidimensional spreadsheet for everybody
But then you need Docker... right?
