tubbo··on We are Colorblind
How are you guys reading this if there's no `wp-config.php`? :)
tubbo··on The Differences Between Germany and the United States
"What are they afraid of?"

Have you not been paying attention in the last 50 years? We've made a hell of a lot of enemies, and before that it was communism, and before that it was world wars. Our military is strong because if it wasn't we would be getting attacked constantly. I'm pretty sure that a major reason why there haven't been any substantial terrorist attacks on the US since 9/11 is because our military will FUCK UP ENTIRE COUNTRIES if that happens again. Shit, we got launched into a 6-year war with 2 countries after an independent terrorist group blew up our building. If the KKK went to another country and bombed a building, would that country then attack and occupy us? Absolutely not! Because they can't.

tubbo··on GitHub.js
yeah i was wondering about that too...

"Github.js is automatically™ tested by the users of Prose. Because of that, we decided to save some time by not maintaining a test suite."

I know that Prose isn't a for-profit, business-centric app, but how does this work exactly? Is there some system built in to notify developers when an error happens, like with Airbrake? If so, THAT sounds like an awesome tool for businesses!

tubbo··on Introducing Outlook.com - Modern Email for the Next Billion Mailboxes

tubbo··on Step by step from jQuery to Backbone
Awesome write-up, always good to see examples of Backbone apps written properly alongside jQuery.
tubbo··on Step by step from jQuery to Backbone
HAHAHA nice IE 503 error...
tubbo··on The real reason we’re upset about Sparrow’s acquisition
What's the point of paying at all if it's going to be acquired? Seems to be you could save a bit of money by just stealing it until it gets acquired, then download the free version legally. I'm all for supporting independent developers, but I feel like I'm wasting money when I buy an app that's just going to be free in the future anyway.
tubbo··on How This Guy Lied His Way Into MSNBC, ABC News, The New York Times and More
What a fucking attention whore.
tubbo··on Spool is joining Facebook

tubbo··on The Silent Majority of Experts
I think this has more to do with age than anything else. But it might also be because you can do stuff faster in Ruby or Python or JavaScript so you have all this time to wax poetic about it. ;)

There's still nothing like C/C++ for getting close to the metal. And until we have an OS written in Ruby or Python, rather than C, it's gonna be like that forever.

tubbo··on The Most Important Social Network: GitHub
It could work as a center of collaboration all around the world. Until [Gobbler](http://gobbler.com) came out, I was using Git as a means of version-controlling my music projects (even going so far as to branch and merge the project, my DAW allows me to do this without touching audio files since all changes are saved to a new file). GitHub has shown us that you can create an extremely powerful collaboration tool around Git, all you have to do is design a user interface that's simple, elegant and familiar to those involved. I can't wait to see what other companies do with Git.
tubbo··on Free Chrome CDs in Best Buy

tubbo··on Why Our Elites Stink
Not only that, but we're talking about what the press knows. The press is a lot bigger now, because we're all a member of the press. There's more news now because there's more capability to disseminate information quickly. In the "heady days" of the 50s and 60s that David talks about, our speed of information uptake was much lower than it is today. So to tie our current problems to a meritocratic system that isn't run (well, as deeply) by a caste of elites is just completely ignorant of the fact that the average person knows more than the average person did in the 1960s.
tubbo··on EpicEditor: An Embeddable JavaScript Markdown Editor
That's...fucking awesome.
tubbo··on Thoughts on Rails, Node, and the web apps of today
The reason why Rails is going to continue being awesome even in the API-dominated web apps of tomorrow, is the asset pipeline. There's just nothing else out there that manages your assets quite the same way. In fact, the asset pipeline makes it dead-simple and even efficient to program big, high-performance apps in CoffeeScript. Sure, it doesn't force asynchronous behavior, but I feel that's more of a feature than a flaw. Sometimes, asynchronous calls are just not possible (like in the case of Authorize.Net's API), and you need to build something a little more robust, and easy to test when things go wrong. Therefore, I feel Rails is actually the best choice for an API backend, because it has so many drop-in monitoring tools available as well as ways to enhance performance by dropping frameworks you don't need, plus you can code asynchronously with it but you don't have to.
tubbo··on HP Memristors Will Reinvent Computer Memory "by 2014"
Memristors have "been around" in laboratory settings for a few years now. The research is done, now it's time to figure out how to market it. Seems pretty reasonable to me. This is actually very exciting to me, because the concept of a memristor, that of a large amount of small devices storing chunks of a larger piece of memory, is supposedly the same or a similar way that your brain's memory works.
tubbo··on Viacom pulls “The Daily Show” offline as a result of contract dispute
isn't it annoying how adblock screws with hulus ads? it's almost harder to watch the thing without ads than with them. eww, did i just say that? shudder

tubbo··on Github Raises $100 Million

tubbo··on 2012 Submarine Cable Map
Easy, so we can spy on Russian traffic.
tubbo··on On Configuration
Agreed. The trick is to be away from your comfort zone periodically, so you can retain the mnemonics of vanilla bash/vim but take advantage of zsh's nice features as well. I typically don't have ZSH running on any remote server I work on (except my personal VPS) for precisely this reason, it helps me keep the vanilla shortcuts in memory.

But realistically, most my custom configuration is suited to working with large projects that have lots of files. I never open the whole project up in shell vim on the remote server, if I'm gonna be doing that I might as well just open it locally and push to Git. I feel that configuration should build on top of the editor/shell you're already using, not modify it so heavily that it renders the vanilla shell unrecognizable.

tubbo··on StackOverflow Man Remakes Net One Answer at a TIme

tubbo··on PHP is much better than what you think
PHP still can't access email inboxes inherently, can't do CSV import, can't download packages from GitHub the way Bundler can, doesn't support metaprogramming, has a hacked-together OOP system, and has an absolutely horrid syntax.

Why am I meant to use PHP again?

Oh yeah, because you haven't discovered Ruby yet.

tubbo··on Spam from an Android botnet
It seems far more likely to me that this is the case.
tubbo··on Wunderground.com sold to The Weather Channel Companies
This statement is total bullshit. Weather Underground doesn't have better data or coverage than the Weather Channel. If you're really looking for more coverage, check out the weather blogs.
