tsoukase··on Has Violence Against Teachers Become Accepted by Society?
Violence should be unacceptable on every level (personal, social, inter/national). But it still happens because we are humans. Now, violence against teachers, doctors/nurses and other service professions is more acceptable than in the past, simply because the mass shows less respect to everything, including these services.
tsoukase··on Back and shoulder surgery is often worse than useless
Back and shoulder surgery contra/indications must pass through an AND gate. Appropriate age, symptoms, duration, no response to drugs, specific target in the MRI. If one fails, it is contraindicated, which happens in 95-99%, at least for my patients.
tsoukase··on Six-year-old breaks women's world Rubik's Cube record [video]
This is an amazing endeavour for a child but I am sceptical about the transfer of this dexterity to real life achievements and eventually happiness. My son was obsesssed at that age with LEGO, making his own sets and uploading them to public repos, and now at 11 yo all he wants is to be a soccer player with no interest in any intellectual activity.
tsoukase··on Why is the liver so weirdly regenerative?
Cells are specialized to their function, as well as to their diseases. The trade offs mentioned in the article seem simplistic, trying to capture the billions of years of evolution. Repair, regeneration, regrowth and cancer have distinct mechanisms that vary from cell type to type.

Liver regeneration has been known since the ancient times: in Greek mythology an eagle was eating the liver of Prometheus every day for thousands of years after Zeus punished him for donating the fire to humans but he survived to be saved by Hercules.

tsoukase··on AI Has No Wisdom and Neither Will You
I love when I can reason about and follow the LLMs' output, when I learn from it. I hate when it makes me dumber and less efficient.
tsoukase··on Microsoft exec called AI scraping 'the largest theft of labor in human history'
There were the fundaments of communism two centuries ago.
tsoukase··on Two parallel neural ectoderm progenitors contribute to the developing brain
Hemispheric neurons seem totally different than those of brain stem, the latter being more like an extention of spinal cord. Higher neurons are not only specialized but they form sophisticated centres and complicated networks that process the highest sensory and motor signals and form what human is. The brain stem only contains nuclei and autonomic centres that are of low complexity. We knew they are different, kudos to the team that explored, proved, published and even applied this knowledge.
tsoukase··on Douglas Hofstadter: Analogy as the Core of Cognition [video]
In ancient Greek the word Logos means Reason and Analogy. He explicitly states that they are not the same. So I guess we have a debate.
tsoukase··on Trey Parker and Matt Stone Are Changing the Name of South Park to South America
I suggest we support the, already in use, name of America for the whole continent, so, almost for free, USA means all north and south America countries together and we are done with land. Now the oceans are tricky: Atlantic can become East American sea and Pacific, West American sea. Or just Little Boy and Fat Man.
tsoukase··on AlphaGenome Atlas: a high-resolution map of human DNA
May be that's the reason for the alpha naming. We are waiting for a stable release (just kidding).
tsoukase··on Switzerland's Federal Government Is Replacing Microsoft on 3k Computers
I wonder where does Linux have more share, in personal desktops, in private companies or in government.
tsoukase··on 216M Spy TVs – The LG Smart TV Problem [video]
This might be a source of personal data for Facebook so the next day they present you the product you discussed with your wife last night.
tsoukase··on Actively exploited sandbox RCE in all Chromium versions
I believe programmers still write in C(++) after memory safe options, in order to continue being occupied afterwards, fixing the bugs that will arise. Without criminals, police is obsolete.
tsoukase··on The Real Luxuries In Life
Human needs are tricky. We usually hold basic needs as luxuries. Time and health are basic needs while luxuries should be some unneeded details, like a larger car or home. The most basic human need is oxygen, but I think this falls under health.
tsoukase··on Dogs can distinguish between fearful and angry or sad human faces
My dog knows my complete mood complex instantly every time I show up. It's a social/emotional intelligence unmatched by human. Unfortunatelly, or hopefuly for the human race, he cannot combine this ability with enough cognitive intelligence.
tsoukase··on Global warming will exceed 1.5-degree limit, UN says
After 50 years since I was born for the first I didnt eat grapes from my backyard in Southern Europe because they dried up due to extreme heat. In the rest of my life I might miss any other fruit.
tsoukase··on Play Store blocks AuroraStore, hurting GrapheneOS users
Please add to the title "... and all other degoogled devices", which are many orders of magnitude more than GOS: almost all Huawei devices (degoogled out of the box), custom Roms, rooted and all non-logged in. I am a non-GOS hurt victim.
tsoukase··on The world may have less time than it thinks on climate change
If you don't express your comment in logic notation, I will not understand it. Though you might be right.
tsoukase··on The world may have less time than it thinks on climate change
The globe couldnt afford a couple of massive energy consumers (USA and Europe) let alone three more (China, India and Africa). Even if Renewables or EVs reach a pesky 30% in limited areas, CO2 levels will not care.

Total climate change is almost 100% sure, there is no return. Or, for the optimists, the time we have is until the next elections.

tsoukase··on California lawmakers unanimously pass Linux exemption from age-verification law
The year of linux desktop lies in the heart of each of it's users.
tsoukase··on GUIs should be fully keyboard-driven
That's because I am keen of TUIs. Keyboard-only and so necessarily intuitive.
tsoukase··on Doctors are finally learning to manage antidepressant withdrawal
The guideline "The benefit must outweigh the harm" is more relevant for aD drugs than anything else in medicine. The problem is that it's difficult to estimate the risk for such relatively rare but debilitating side effect. When I prescribe an aD, there is a wide margin of expected benefit taking into consideration a dozen of long term risks, among which, I admit, PSSD is of less worry. Others more important are cardiovascular, metabolic (permanent weight gain), cognitive (dementia), even social (disruption of relationships).
tsoukase··on Doctors are finally learning to manage antidepressant withdrawal
All cases are possible with S{S|N}RIs (I am a doctor but I know a little regexp). Patients that took them for two months and never needed again and others that cannot stop them after 20y. The start, the stop and every restart of the drug needs an indication so it should be approached with the same care as any medical decision.

It's not right to call it withdrawal. These drugs are not addictive like benzos or alcohol are. If any symptom reappears it's just that the mental disease most usually changed form after so long time. As for the sexual dysfunction, a common known side effect is that they kill (delay or eliminate) the orgasm. Libido and male erection are affected by so many psycho-social, somatic and genetic factors that it's usually difficult to spot the exact relation with these drugs.

tsoukase··on Oceans hit highest temperature on record
I think it's time to rename it to El Hombre.
tsoukase··on Oceans hit highest temperature on record
I am also in a convenient place expecting more heat (mountainous region with cold nights/winters, enough water). I admit I enjoy the warmer months and wait for people come visit me for Coolidays.
tsoukase··on Explain it to me like I'm ten
The whole ELIx implies that an advanced narrator has to simplify things for another adult. Why not just call it a simplified ELI-at-my-age?
tsoukase··on Why aren't smart people happier? (2022)
Simple, many-times-repeated fact: smartness -> high expectations but low yield -> disappointment. The imbalance between expected and returned may or not be the person's responsibility.

Every smart person should invest time to learn the dexterities to manage their talent.

tsoukase··on I should have loved biology (2020)
The cell is a factory. You can have deep dive with the book Molecular Biology of the Cell, although it's used in university. It's the SICP of biology. The latter was published in 1985 the former in 1983. I read it in 1995 and it's amazing how much was known then. I haven't followed a cellular/genetic path to experience the evolution.
tsoukase··on Why the Ocean Cleanup hasn't solved the plastic pollution crisis
Yes, but removing plastic from a huge concentrate in the middle of the pacific sounds much nicer in the media than removing trash from distant beaches that noone visits. And environent protection depends a lot on how it is presented to the public.
tsoukase··on OpenRouter is joining Stripe
I used to demand the same but a word can have multiple meanings depending on the context, eg OpenMind means something specific. Open{$IT-term} does not necessarily mean Open Source {$IT-term} and OpenAI might mean an AI available to all people, not implying anything about cost. What could be illegal is the word Free, which a for-profit company would never use in the first place.
