tsoukase··on I should have loved biology (2020)
The cell is a factory. You can have deep dive with the book Molecular Biology of the Cell, although it's used in university. It's the SICP of biology. The latter was published in 1985 the former in 1983. I read it in 1995 and it's amazing how much was known then. I haven't followed a cellular/genetic path to experience the evolution.
tsoukase··on Why the Ocean Cleanup hasn't solved the plastic pollution crisis
Yes, but removing plastic from a huge concentrate in the middle of the pacific sounds much nicer in the media than removing trash from distant beaches that noone visits. And environent protection depends a lot on how it is presented to the public.
tsoukase··on OpenRouter is joining Stripe
I used to demand the same but a word can have multiple meanings depending on the context, eg OpenMind means something specific. Open{$IT-term} does not necessarily mean Open Source {$IT-term} and OpenAI might mean an AI available to all people, not implying anything about cost. What could be illegal is the word Free, which a for-profit company would never use in the first place.
tsoukase··on A controversial Alzheimer's surgery is said to reverse symptoms
Chinese authorities already debunked the theory and banned the procedure.

There was the Italian Dr. Paolo Zamboni that in 2008 promised a multiple sclerosis treatment with a surgery on the neck based on falsified data. European Neurological society uncovered the scandal.

It seems the neck attracts charlatans.

tsoukase··on Super El Niño Keeps Growing as New Forecasts Reach Record Territory Ahead Winter
I am also up in the mountains. I confirm it's the warmest summer for four consecutive times. Something happened in 2023. We may call it a tipping point. Although I enjoy milder winters (goodbye skiing), the summers are not mild anymore.
tsoukase··on Abdominal fat predicts heart disease risk better than BMI
This is known since decades. Male type fat, central obesity or belly fat, is much worse than female type, pear-like. Hormones play a role under the hood. I don't know if liposuction would play any preventive role.
tsoukase··on Semaglutide linked to lower predicted dementia risk
Let's not be absolute. There are some people craving for food (esp. endomorphs), some binge eaters (eg under depression) or low metabolizers (hypothyroid) but for many it's easy to cut calories.
tsoukase··on Semaglutide linked to lower predicted dementia risk
Diabates can harm the brain either indirectly, through vascular damage, or directly through nerve cell degeneration. The latter is a less studied mechanism and can explain the benefit from GLPs. But I agree, it's not different than a low calorie diet. In the modern times of abundance and sedentary lifestyle, fasting makes wonders. So, if you have even one vascular risk factor, just cut your calories in half, just stop eating. Your body will thank you.
tsoukase··on AI has access to a vastly larger working memory than the human brain
Working memory is literally the L1 cache of the brain, which holds a mere 3-7 objects. The article seems to conflate w-m with regular memory, which is what a human knows at a specific time.

Computers, especially now with LLMs, have everything vastly larger than human like speed and complexity. What LLMs lack is more qualitative traits, like creativity, abstraction and intuition.

tsoukase··on The Indo-European Family Tree
Same in Fennek. Did they not check their presentation in mobile?
tsoukase··on Principia Mathematica is modern and insightful
The foundations of math can equally by ZFC as well as in my basement. From any initial concept you can bootstrap mathematics.
tsoukase··on Illinois just passed a law that puts Linux on the hook for age verification
I could accept the solution that the superuser decides about the age bracket of each regular user, that can be changed anytime.

sudo chage -u mybob --bracket teen

Users cannot change the setting, it can be presented to apps and let parents simply and safely enforce will.

The root is the ultimate leader of the system, let him do his thing.

tsoukase··on US hires over 2k video gamers as air traffic controllers
It would be more interesting if they control for the games played. Eg Air traffic controllers that play Flight Sim, truck drivers that play GTA5 or teachers with Call of duty.
tsoukase··on I made tinnitus my friend, then it disappeared [video]
The more weight the better. There is an expression: break your comfort zone. But more important is an (almost) perfect exercise technique. Then resistance training makes unexpected wonders in all ages.
tsoukase··on Show HN: Scroll through all 43252003274489856000 Rubik's Cube states
My kid wanted to jump 3x3x3 and go directly to a 4 cube. I freaked out when we messed it and thought we could never solve it, because you can't disassemble a 4 cube into pieces like a 3 one. In the end it's not so difficult: like a 3 as you move around the two middle pieces of each edge together like one.
tsoukase··on Taxi drivers rarely die of Alzheimer's
A primitive risk factor of Dementia is the lower cognitive effect lately due to any modern cause: drugs, mobile phones/LLMs, stress of war or climate crisis, job burn out. Even the reverse Flynn effect measured at early adulthood predisposes to earlier dementia diagnosis.
tsoukase··on “Code was never the hard part” is an insult to all programmers
This property is not so hard to learn and has some advantages, especially in oral form. For example for the words though, tough, through, throw it's easier to learn their pronunciation than their meaning, as well as the multiple meanings of set down, throw off, pull up, bring around, get on, go over. English is a foreign language for me though.
tsoukase··on Everything you do is being recorded
Privacy, as security, is spread on a spectrum, depending the threat actor capability. FAAM account and content linking and LLMs' deep online search easily uncover anyone using non-advanced tools.
tsoukase··on Don't use your phone while you poop
Mandatory thinking in the bathroom must be an ingrained behaviour in our DNA. It happens in very diverse cultures by people of every class.
tsoukase··on “Code was never the hard part” is an insult to all programmers
Every language has it's specific difficulties as foreign, the French pronunciation, the Spanish speed, the Chinese ... well leave it. The English has the "easiest difficulty" among all: phrasal verbs, which are of moderate importance and can mostly be avoided.
tsoukase··on NASA figured out how to keep its Voyager 2 probe running for another year
Relevant for Voyager I

tsoukase··on Adults over 65 will outnumber children by 2029
Humankind obviously will not die, it will adapt through various ways. Eg health services for elderly will be needed and inheritance will play an increased role as a single person will inherit multiple ancestors.
tsoukase··on Tax cuts for the wealthy only benefit the rich (2023)
If we started the society/economy from scratch today, the current situation would seem absurd, inhumane and unacceptable. Imagine an inequality in scale of 10000s while you are only 1.5 more capable than the average.

(Very) rich people with their legal (eg tax loopholes) and illegal (eg sold politicians) tactics cost middle class people almost 100% their optimal income. Not to mention qualities of life like social state and safety. Calculations need a blog post.

tsoukase··on The US is not a democracy but an oligarchy, study concludes (2014)
Any political system regresses to oligarchy. Both a single or all people cannot practically govern, so a few take over soon anyway. The question is, how are these few chosen?
tsoukase··on The US is not a democracy but an oligarchy, study concludes (2014)
Kakistos = worst. I am Greek and I have never heard such an accurate word for the modern political system.
tsoukase··on Aristotle quotes on virtue, knowledge, and happiness
Aristotle is very good, but Plato is perfect. Some random quotes:

Only the dead have seen the end of war

We can easily forgive a child who is afraid of the dark; the real tragedy of life is when men are afraid of the light

Wise men speak because they have something to say; fools because they have to say something.

If women are expected to do the same work as men, we must teach them the same things.

tsoukase··on Germany Records Historic 12B KWh Solar Feed-In in July 2026
In Greece there is an unjustified support for natural gas. They deliberately stop renewables adoption (no more netmetering, no more batteries) because the Prime minister sleeps at the same bed with gas-people (like Mytilinaios). We have to burn gas from a few to many hours per day.
tsoukase··on More German than many Germans
I am glad I hear the warm and polite Willkommen hasn't changed. Thirty years ago a 20 something me visited Bonn for Erasmus and the following for medical Residency. Same excellent impressions, same humanely feelings, same satisfying conclusions. Although I returned back to my country, I always question myself if I should stay and regret. But you can never know how an hypothetical life path could unfold, because, well, YOLO.
tsoukase··on Linux Desktop Market Share Surpasses 10% in North America
For sure Linux ecosystem will dominate over Windows if things remain as now. The question is when: in 5 or 15 years. There are so many reasons:

- high hardware prices push people to keep their 5-10 y-o PC that crawl under updated Windows versions

- stupid Windows practices, like ads and updates, that make people feel, well, stupid

- improvement of Linux distro support, mainly due to instant help by LLMs

- a series of other goodies, like games on Steam, practically non-existent malware, strong security, lack of privacy invasion and the most important: legally FREE.

At about 30-35% market share there will be a tipping that will accelerate the adoption through support by big corps, mild monetization and by being just a "sexy compute".

tsoukase··on Anthropic AI Models Hacked Three Companies During Tests
The last resort path for a failing company is to sell porn. When this time comes for LLM companies, it's the end of the bubble.
