tsieling··on Show HN: Bracket City – A daily, exploded (?) crossword puzzle
Really fun and a fresh format. Well done!
tsieling··on AI Interior Designer
“Try me” “You have credits” on buy credits page “Sign in with google” “Upload image” “You have no credits - buy some” pricing page is broken

Pretty much sums up AI scam slop. What a joke.

tsieling··on Should required fields be marked?
I'm not sure we can always interpret 'optional' as 'nice to have but not necessary'. Optional fields can often cover edge or alternate cases like an apartment number in addition to a street address, a dietary or other accessibility accommodation, etc.

You could work around it by adding a bunch of conditional fields which then move more work onto the person filling in the form (tell me you need the extra fields then I'll show them and they will then be required) and add code complexity (more UI flows to test).

Many optional fields are indeed nice to have but assuming they all are misses that the world has a lot of fuzzy edges, and optional spaces handle those with a simple convention that many people expect and understand.

tsieling··on Scarlett Johansson Sues Disney over ‘Black Widow’ Streaming Release
I think they were negotiating in March 2019, when there wasn't a pandemic to consider?
tsieling··on Adobe Photoshop ships on Macs with Apple Silicon
That's exactly how I read it and my immediate reaction was 'hard no'. Glad it was a misread because bad things lie down that path.
tsieling··on Search Engine for Free Music Ranked by Usage of Youtubers
Why the email address grab?
tsieling··on Apple to kill Epic’s accounts on Friday the 28th
Roughly the same, I think the variance is about 10% with Steam being an outlier working in tiers tied to revenue. At least one allows developers to name the cut (including 0%) but 30% is the most common number.
tsieling··on Show HN: A bookmarking tool designed to help synthesize your web research
I feel pretty dumb, sure enough it's right there. Pardon my error I glanced right past that. Positioning the text with the password field would likely help, and/or include all rules in the error message, not just the one that's violated.
tsieling··on Show HN: A bookmarking tool designed to help synthesize your web research
Ah another round of 'guess the password policy'!. Try a password. No, it needs a capital letter. Next try, No, it must also have a symbol.

I moved on after that. If this is the UX of setting up a password, I'm not up for the rest.

tsieling··on Facebook's employees reckon with the social network they've built
The policy and the design of the interface is inextricably linked to that change in interactions. A hands-off policy is still a policy for a site that rewarded more inflammatory content in pursuit of certain metrics.
tsieling··on Santa Cruz, California bans predictive policing in U.S. first
More crimes are documented because of extra policing, but that is different from whether more crimes are committed. Crimes of different degrees are happening all around, but if you look particularly in one area that is where you'll see crime.
tsieling··on Ask HN: What collaborative whiteboard are you using?
Agreed. Instant deal breaker.
tsieling··on Dotscience is shutting down
I appreciate how this was handled on the homepage: direct and looking out for your team.
tsieling··on How Tech Can Build
$1B, but it landed at about $750M because of the FB shares that took a tumble just after.
tsieling··on Highest French court reclassifies Uber drivers as employees
Take it or leave it isn't really negotiation, though, is it. There's no counter offer or alternative terms to work with. As I understand too many declines get drivers kicked off the platform, so their autonomy in this regard seems fairly limited.
tsieling··on Global warming has begun to make Norway warmer and wetter
Totally agree. I sent this to a few clients noting 'when we talk about digital storytelling, this is a good example'.
tsieling··on WikiHow’s art is made by a network of freelancers, mostly in the Philippines
Press esc and wave that block away. For now, at least.
tsieling··on macOS Catalina
It's in the Mac App Store for me, but not as the marquee product at the moment.
tsieling··on Dropbox exposes personal details of viewers of publicly shared Paper documents
I couldn't figure out their licensing or payment model for a team, everything led back to subscriptions and was hideously complicated. We went back to Dropbox because it just worked, no matter how much cruft its taken on.
tsieling··on The Last Apple Keynote (Hopefully)
This article is deluded. Apple practically creates its own weather and rules the news cycle through these events. Because poor Charlie is bored is hardly a reason to give up on a formula that creates billions in sales.
tsieling··on Dark Matter from Scalar Field Fluctuations
Thank you this is helpful.
tsieling··on Dark Matter from Scalar Field Fluctuations
Can anyone explain the definition of big bang that they're using here? My understanding has always been that inflation happened a very short time after the big bang, arguably as part of the process itself, but pre-big bang is hard to conceive (like going north of north). Is it meant as an antecedent or precondition of the big bang, or as something outside the big bang itself?
tsieling··on Show HN: A tool to create printable UI mockups and wireframes templates
This is really well done. And +1 for the suggestion of placeholder spaces for notes. Great work, thank you for sharing this.
tsieling··on Netflix CEO may have missed the real reason why US subscriber numbers plunged
No punishment is enough for auto-play previews.
tsieling··on 1Password: Standalone / Local Vault Option Gone?
What did you move to?
tsieling··on Soulver – Notepad, meet calculator
Pretty much identical to the desktop apps, all docs sync nicely.
tsieling··on Superhuman: Read Statuses
When these things happen, to me the more important thing is what will leadership do to change the thinking that led to the problem. Issuing a patch is a solid step, but it's a symptom that points to a need for change in how features are vetted and thought through.
tsieling··on Superhuman: Read Statuses
Make it opt-in with a link on the first email sent to that address?
tsieling··on Cambridge's Ambitious Protected Bike Lane Law
The cost of things should indeed be considered. Depending on region, tax money subsidizes every mile driven (one well done source here https://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2015/10/driving... but there are many, many others). A switch to cycling amounts to a much lower subsidy per mile, so if we want to talk costs then the argument for cycling infrastructure becomes even stronger.

The Miami Herald article where I think this story broke suggests it's that not every incident gets resolved:

> Despite several email exchanges, Uber never agreed to reimburse her the extra money. But she disputed the charge with her credit card company and got back her $98. Uber then canceled her account.
