how? management in most Tech companies are incentivizing them to do just that, so if you bring it up, they'll happily trot over to your manager to complain and then the uncomfortable conversation is you with management about why you're getting in the way of AI uptake by the team.
trustfundbaby··on Appearing productive in the workplace
Or maybe they just didn't have the time (left it to the last minute and ran out of it), and went with the first thing that AI proposed which was said CLI with documentation.
trustfundbaby··on Alert-driven monitoring
SLO timelines are usually over 7d, 30d etc no? and also often don't work that great for backend services in my experience ... they can't give you the level of reactivity that defining alerts about things you care about give you. I'd argue that moving from that direction upwards to figure out what alerts to aggregate and define SLOs around, rather than the other way around in those cases.
trustfundbaby··on Skilled tech workers snapped up despite downturn
I don't think that massive downturn people are thinking is coming ... is going to come. The job market is too strong (because of lower immigration, and how many exited the job market during covid) and so is the housing market.

I thinks its going to be more like this for the next 8-12 months, until the fed stops raising interest rates, and then it will be a mad dash to get everything going again.

trustfundbaby··on Skilled tech workers snapped up despite downturn
> Is anyone aware of how hard covid hit the software engineering community via early deaths/retirements?

Can you provide some data around that?

Bird is another big one, they've been trading below the $1 watermark for a week or two now, after 30 days of consecutively trading under $1 companies get delisted from the exchange.

This is one of the truest things I've ever read.

trustfundbaby··on Bits of advice I wish I had known
The people who like your new stuff will help you figure out how to fix it and make it good enough so the old system truly becomes obsolete, otherwise the old system will continue to exist and people will continue to use it, so that now, theres 2 options instead of just one.

trustfundbaby··on US Federal Reserve raises interest rates for first time since 2018
>We did waste the 3 yrs before Covid hit by not increasing interest rates and not reducing Fed's money printing.

Most of the money printing happened in 2020 and after. https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/M1SL

No Dichotomy there, its one thing to 'charge more' for your services, its another thing to ask for 30% of your client's SaaS subscription revenue, because you built them a website.

I think you get to choose the proportion of cash and stock for the number you're given or did I get that completely wrong?
trustfundbaby··on Know how your org works, or how to become a more effective engineer
This is a really good post that every engineer should read, especially early on in their career. I spent a lot of mine butting my head against a wall, and getting nowhere because I thought that soft skills and understanding organizational politics (not necessarily participating in them) weren't super important as long as you were good at the primary work of building software.

This post articulates exactly why those things are important and furthermore exactly how to pursue acquiring them in the right measure to get things done in your org. Brilliant stuff.

trustfundbaby··on Ask HN: My boss doesn't think I'm doing good work, how to proceed?
I think what probably happened here is this ... your bosses boss, has had misgivings about the project and your work on it, that he's been passing on to your boss. I think your boss either disagrees, or agrees but has been trying to softly nudge you in the right direction without alarming you.

My feeling is that it's probably the latter, which is why you haven't heard anything since the meeting between two of them after you left. You're new in the industry so this isn't something that you should even be able to pick up, but what I'd suggest is a bit more tactful probing around these ideas to find out if one of those guesses is correct.

If you, or worse you AND your boss are on the higher ups shitlist, you want to take corrective action as quickly as possible even if your boss doesn't (which might involve lining up another gig, just in case).

As an anecdote, in a toxic environment, I had a boss who was shielding me in similar fashion from his boss who was supportive of some other coworkers I was repeatedly butting heads with. My boss agreed with me and thought my approach and work was the right way to do things, but I had no inkling till one day he casually mentioned that his boss had weighed in on what up to that point just seemed like low level squabbling. That got me very alarmed indeed, and he was shitcanned not even 4 weeks later. Turns out that they had pressed him repeatedly to fire me, and used he refusal to do so as one of the reasons to get rid of him.

In came a new boss, and within weeks (conveniently after I'd wrapped up a very difficult project, which was part of the reason my now-former boss had been shielding me from them) I was told I had no future at the company (directly from the higher up). So, keep your ears and eyes peeled and proceed to do some digging.

Your boss might not be giving you the full scoop on what's going on behind the scenes, and you might need that information to take evasive action. Hopefully I'm wrong though.

trustfundbaby··on A request for Pinboard old-timers
Old timer here. I actually wound up building something that worked a little better for me (I wouldn't deign to call it a competitor) but the value pinboard has provided me for years makes this a no brainer. I will pay for at least one year.

Thanks for being so straightforward about this and letting us use it for free all this time!
