trueno··on Ask HN: What would happen if your company stopped using all AI tomorrow?
this and i think a lot of "leaders" would go back to being quiet. they're quite emboldened to be in everyone's business these days seems like they're smoking a ton of "you're absolutely right to challenge engineering/architect teams here..."
trueno··on Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Mythos 5.1
i think they took a huge bet that speaking like a ted talk was going to be a vast popular differentiator in their offering, i don't think they anticipated that people were going to make fun of it, that it could become a meme..that it could get in the way of getting stuff done and result in cancellations.

it's downright exhausting to read claude, the language style was a regression imo.

trueno··on Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Mythos 5.1
> In some cases, though, its prose is denser than Claude Fable 5's: sentences run longer and there are fewer paragraph breaks

that feels like they just blocked words like load-bearing but can't actually fix the real problem. The insane word slop density and run on sentences was the real reason it became annoying to work with claude, colored with way too many analogies and pointless linguistic comparisons.

trueno··on Understanding ChatGPT Work
last week i finally bit the bullet and did the vm thing and my harness exclusively lives in there now, no more env files for local dev keychain access only which is requiring a lot of input from me but oh well. i'm 100% web browser chat on my host system. i cannot afford to have my world compromised and i stalled on setting that up for way too long. all of these major services are inevitably going to get compromised they're just adding too many surfaces constantly it's insane. i also ejected node/npm the fuck out of my world after the recent shai halud. In this "AI is assisting in finding vulnerabilities" era i'm just like done with the exposure. keeping vendored copies of any libs i need and mostly just use go now and making stuff that is effectively distroless for deployment and my build chain is pretty much just compiling my go, and even with go im carefully looking at packages theres so many packages appearing out of thin air now all vibe coded no reputation.
trueno··on It takes 5 cloud services to hear my doorbell
gotta get claude to write the garbage nextjs vercel app that plays the recorded video online ofc you're smart and you tell him to build a login screen but your no auth vercel edge function accepts requests from anyone. oh and you let openclaw run the show and it puts the videos in your free cloud flare blob. you show your friends and family the app you made, you offer to build them one too, everyone claps
trueno··on Calibrate Before You Accelerate: Bias Toward Action in a New Role
broadly speaking AI has shown itself to be unreliable in a lot of domains so even if its strongest feature is in fact language, it still carries a readers predisposed experiences with the tech. That is just one problem. You also have to contend with the onslaught of AI generated content that is being used in deliberately fake articles, online personas and the mountains and mountains of things people and entities are trying to push to make a buck. Scams, misinformation, state-sponsored propaganda, a lot of things that are arguably bad for society. So if you consider that, you must also accept that you are making a choice to use a linguistic style that is used by many websites that are vectors that do harm or deliberately mislead (which also does harm).

Even if the ideas are of your own merit, you can't expect readers to always do the literary surgery it will take to identify that. That's extra investigative work and assessment that was never a part of anyones reportoire before all this took off. But at this point i don't think you should be surprised that AI writing isn't met with open arms, AI writing has become a pain point for a lot of people in their personal lives and their work lives, a lot of organizations are wounding themselves as people throw their ideas around curated in AI and everyone's eyes are glazing over. It's become synonymous with "this guy does not understand the claude proposal he just sent me". And the choice is yours if you still want to use it knowing that, I just don't think you should be surprised if it doesn't get the reception you hoped for.

Plus, you should lean into whatever your monologue is to write. Even if you're afraid it's not pro enough, like. That's writing. It's a journey it has crossover with your ability to communicate it defines you as a person. Keep sharpening that tool and you have untold ways to convey ideas exactly the way you want people to experience them for the first time.

i threw the oscar server up on a container at work last year and sent my friends the clients. absolute trip hearing that open door sound again lmao. good times. we all just warned each other for the rest of the day.

somehow that experience eclipsed microsoft teams. i suppose thats unsurprising

trueno··on A better SQL in 11 lines of code
and i think this is somewhere in the ballpark of a p good approach, treat it as a dataset that has some predefined queries to get what's needed if you're OCD about seeing it in the code

sql is an interface query way to talk to databases, and treating things as datasets where their initialization query lives in a certain spot that flows into something generic/typed or whatever so that it can be wrangled elsewhere in the code with its own bespoke guarantees and handling behaviors is fine i think

i think i just don't think seeing sql in code or near code is a bad thing at all, to me it just means this code talks to a database and its using the database dialect/language to query the data. maybe people see string replacements over the query to apply variables or whatever as a bad thing i dunno, I think it's a relatively simple way to look directly at how a query might be dynamically adjusted on the fly. i dont have to like step through the lineage of methods and whatever other abstractions to formulate _how_ it put a query together. it's definitely annoying that there's some wild west feel to having so many dialects of sql, but it's a hard bet to make that you're going to make a better sql in 11 lines of code. SQL looks different than code because it is different, it's entire function is different, different paradigms are at play it's specifically purposed for querying and it excels at that on every front.

trueno··on A better SQL in 11 lines of code
am i the only one who's not afraid of sql taking up lines? sql thats formatted well is beautiful to read my brain enjoys it. it's way easier to read sql in terms of "what resultset is this trying to build" then it is to pick apart some fluent api lookin orm on top of sql

i use this stack quite a bit too. i made the claude do some load bearing 360 backflips, gate and seam a whole buncha smoking guns, and bolt go-starlark on top of this so i can just declare little web apps like its streamlit but it doesn't feel sucky like streamlit. i get to just write little blurbs of python-looking code and i get these fully reactive tools. probably my favorite and most used abstraction that came from too much wine and lazy boredom. also built stupid simple framework ish coverage for connections and duckdb and a few other things.
trueno··on Get your Windows license refund
all of our engineering teams use macs except one dude who carries his early 2000s windows4life gamer energy with him wherever he goes. as it turns out if you aren't specifically like doing cuda or dx stuff having unix and being able to compile quickly, emulate or translate every deployment target architecture, great ppw ... lends a lot of credit towards many domains of software engineering. it feels like it collapsed multiple devices into one. i just spin up a windows environment if i need to support some janky legacy windows only thing.
trueno··on Overcooked? Why robotic pizza makers are failing
My mom's from a third world country and food is literally her way of showing love and yea i dunno i find robotics interesting but i find myself pretty unamused at a lot of automation attempts in the world that just carry this thick undertone of "fuck people", especially when the chances of UBI are virtually zero in The Default Country.

Just feels kinda gross for people to champion the "Doubt all you want but the tech will get better" when a lot of people who don't deserve to be screwed are literally going to be screwed when that day comes. Even with Waymo, like yeah. Cool, car drives itself don't have to talk to a driver sure great. I personally don't feel like it's worth displacing an entire industry of people who don't have other jobs to go to, but some people love to not think about that stuff because futurism. If I call a lyft/uber like both of those aren't my favorite companies at all but I understand the position people are in that work these jobs and it's not a perfect arrangement but I summon them anyways and always treat my driver well and tip well.

The _only_ robotics I'd be in here championing "haters gonna hate, itll get better you just wait and see!" is laundry folding machines. I'm annoyed that we're draining lakes over AI, throwing darts on dartboards of low paying wage jobs and spending millions on building robot automation to get rid of them, instead of perfecting the at-home laundry folding machine. Why can't that just be like a global race man I hate folding laundry.

trueno··on Disrupting a new covert influence campaign from Russia
i mean maybe? i wouldn't put it past them personally. producers allocate kind of a lot of budget to the marketing channels and late night talk shows for the cast to try and generate buzz, i think i'd be zero percent surprised disney was willing to burn money engaging in fake content if that's what "the industry" showed to be effective. there was a smaller budget film and by small i mean not disney-wallet that did terribly because it's marketing firm shit the bed on the social media engagement it promised, and that led to a lawsuit. basically all their bots only engaged with themselves on the movies instagram page. this stuff absolutely exists, and on the tron trailer point: sure, again maybe. but the vid was up for like.. literally a minute, like im not even certain any of the commenters would have finished the trailer by the time they had commented. and it was an early morning drop iirc.
trueno··on Disrupting a new covert influence campaign from Russia
i think a lot of people don't realize how far not just nation-states are willing to go, but bajillionaire entities are willing to go to control any given narrative now that AI is so accessible. ig comments, tiktok comments, reddit comments, hn comments, on seemingly innocuous and harmless content, just out there trying to look real and game the perception. these entities are well aware that people go to comments and discussion for "the real tea" and yeah. marketing behemoths offer "social media engagement" packages to entities like disney to push trailer hype. flood youtube and other socials with fake content engagement. i remember within the first like minute disney dropped the latest tron trailer on youtube, it was absolutely flooded with "i'm not ready" "omggggg" caliber comments from seemingly real looking youtube profiles.

trueno··on A week of using Codex more than Claude
my problem with claude currently is the language its using is dense and feels like its not even meant for humans. this guy is calling everything a spine, a seam, a gate, load bearing, any ui element is "chrome", it's actually absurd.
trueno··on Canada will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down

trueno··on Canada will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down
indeed. i'm sure he's surrounded by some lumber moguls stateside that are going to get very rich from this. very russia coded.

i don't doubt deregulation on clearcutting as well as removing land ownership and no logging in national forests & protected lands.... are around the corner with this admin. feel like they attempted that during his last term with attempting to disgrace park rangers over wildfires and saying they didn't rake the leaves on the ground or whatever.

trueno··on Stop Making TUIs
qt is exhausting. flutter is actually awesome these days but the last thing i want to do is commit to dart
trueno··on Stop Making TUIs
there's a million gui frameworks under the sun and i still haven't found one that feels like what everyone has been asking for:

good dx, cross platform, fast, not ugly.

pick i dunno 2 or 3.

tui's get to check 2 or 3 of these just like any other gui library. somehow there still isn't a silver bullet here.

now i personally don't build tuis but guake style dropdown simple command and i have some other thing someone made open immediately running in ghostty? hell yea. with that said yes there are some stupid tuis out there that are anything but simple.

trueno··on Devices with GrapheneOS support should be available in 2027
yea i straight up am not downloading apps anymore if i can help it. virtually zero companies put apps out to provide a better experience, they just do it to get telemetry data. which is why all these banking apps are just their website in some wrapper lol
