once i finally outgrew the tribalism that came with having used windows for the first couple decades of my life, i feel like i just have little to no reverence for that OS anymore that is made by a company that has been downright hostile to computing in general.
i can think of... zero times where a business-coded person even a technical PM (which is a role i do appreciate btw) has ever come up with an official design doc or specification that didnt suck. creating a good design doc is either going to require an architect/staff or senior engineer to sit down and just do it. the overworked architect or staff engineer inevitably gets dragged in if the developers hands are full, or they just beat the shit out of the developer and fill their calendar up with meetings and make them do it... then they beat the shit out of them again and make them build it.. then they beat the shit out of them repeatedly doing fast follows for months and say "no not like that"
i think everyone wants to take some pride in the org they work at and maybe they feel like they've got the formula for sucess, but i personally haven't seen it. there's always going to be an additional translation tax required of the developer(s) who is/are also building the damn thing at the end of it. cover it in poorly run agile/jira shenanigans and this just slows down the possibility of getting to a super stable state back soooo far.
i actually agree with the guy a couple posts up: do some loose design work, friggen dropkick/prototype and see where it lands and go from there. i like facepalm when i hear that our project guys were planning a project for a year and when it was finally time to move on it every specification they planned out missed all the details. this is totally so much worse now with AI writing everything everyone is putting together.
the only game that seems to hit the mark of what im actually itching for is star citizen that is in a perpetual state of never-finished but i can't even quite put a finger on what it is i'm after. beauty, art, real weather, being able to fly up through the atmosphere and just let me escape into a sci fi movie. i can acknowledge star citizen has actually come a long ways and i think they do deliver that, though i haven't played it myself just going off vids ive seen.
NMS somehow feels like a visual and playable interpretation of depression to me with a Dr. Seuss world backdrop lol. Like it reminds me of times in my life where I've just been stuck in the motions, unhappy, resigning myself to the fate of doing absolutely nothing of inspiration because I felt like I had no other options and gave up.
Shout outs to steam for refunding when my reason was "This game is actually depressing"
if there was ever an iphone that was the size of the iphone 5 it would literally be over for me id pay 2000 dollars for it i dont care. there's literally no other options for small phones that don't suck right now i have looked exhaustively. the 13 mini is still the small phone king it's the best damn phone in the milky way.
instagram/facebook over my 20s left some real mental scars though im still trying to sort what the f those apps did to me and to culture at large. i quit instagram like 3 years ago, the classic millenial exploration of pruning your life of shite things to lower the anxiety. the scars i am still stuck with, and mind you i literally don't have these apps anymore:
- i still feel this soft pressure that anything i do doesn't matter unless there is a witness (a post, a story, etc). that is insane. it's been three years and i can still feel that what the hell? there's just no way the guy from 100 years ago who trainhopped around the country ever experienced that kind of pressure. it literally messed my brain up and i have no idea how to fix it for me at least the feeling hasn't gone away
- when you're on the other side it feels like you're just sitting outside of the rest of the worlds culture at this point. it can actually challenge why you left it in the first place and make you consider sacrificing your own well being just to not feel like you're not an outsider from another planet
i never did the tiktok thing so i dunno what that's like. at least leaving twitter felt like shutting a book that kinda sucked and you don't really ever think about it again
going back to opus 4.8 and on is literally like talking to the guy who wants to hear his own voice in meetings. going back to 4.6 is actually refreshing, and it feels so much faster. actually gonna laugh if 4.8 and on is so slow because it's draining lakes fighting for its life trying to conjure up this god forsaken persona.
It literally is maybe not by your metric but someone elses metric that can absolutely be a success. Sometimes getting up in the morning is a success for people I've been there I know what that's like. I'm kind of amused at the gatekeeping of what a 'success' is here. Guy said he has literally learned things that have stuck with him sounds like something he marks as a success to me, not like he was taking the course for college credit and had to demonstrate fluency lol
edit: yea the guy is now consuming media in a foreign language and has had small convos based on what he learned on duolingo. idk man smells like success
in the marine/rv world there are like walkable solar panels that you can literally just like walk on now, theres solar awnings, i dunno. just in my limited experience i'd be surprised if they dont have the christmas light problem (one goes out many go out) and solar arrays just seem to do awesome in panel configurations and i think in the consumer world theyre reaching 25% conversion, no idea what tesla is marketing but those guys are dorks with marketing anyways
this is an ode to me in second grade thinking calculator watches were the pinnacle of human achievement.
I LIKE SMOL AND FUNCTIONAL THINGS!
there is like literally no history to go off of here that indicates there could be consequences for mark or meta.
there is, however, kind of a lot of history showing nothing will happen to him or meta. and the conditions that enabled him to be consequence-free are exist in pretty much the entire judicial apparatus at this point.
it's not so much that it's doomerism as it is... just look at it. lol. we are sailing literally the opposite direction of accountability right now as a nation.
these days with what might as well be branch capture by these bazillionaire entities, id be very surprised to see any actions attempted at the regulatory level against zuck against meta against any of this class ever actually make it into law. am i jaded sure but im mostly stepping back and looking at the game board at this point. i will be very surprised if things ever balance / restore in my lifetime, for now i literally do think the rest of my life is not going to have any chapter where the law puts zuckerberg or meta in its place.
i occasionally do a bit of aws and azure deployments for work, everything is reduced to yaml hell, i think its the most over convoluted experience ever to do anything and opaque billing strategies, abstractions, it's just gross. its hard to be passionate about that stuff.
i kind of laugh when people at my org talk about colocation and elastic strategies for some podunk reporting app, like the bare minimum sla 99.9999999% uptime and runs in regions close to the data and weeks of planning to have like a stupid crud app that maybe five people. use. everything has to neatly fit into this one size fits all cloud strategy the infra/devops team came up with and they could've just run multiple apps off a server rack in the office it's literally an internal tool. or hell they could've just came up with a desktop app deployment strategy to company devices and not used any cloud services. feels so boring
feel like the field of "devops" just kinda threw their hands up got really weird this past decade, and like you said just kinda bought into the deployment strats aws/gcp/azure pulled out of their ass.
the frustration i have with that is the "i don't have a problem with it" crowd is the poster child for lower standards and shittier software experiences. there seems to be no meaningful way to convey "hey, you should care about this".
firefox fumbled super hard earlier this year trying to push their on-by-default AI. it took entirely too long to get them to backtrack a little. you could feel the insulation between customer feedback and their teams working it, they already have the operating models in place to try and force an enshittified offering and you can tell their new MO means they are hungry to do it and i expect more bullshit from firefox up ahead. hopefully we have other options locked and loaded before we get there because they're playing with fire considering how much user share they don't have. mozilla has completely shifted its priorities and structure, i do not expect them to move independently in a direction that benefits us anymore. no one should be surprised if/when they resume shipping some real bullshit up ahead
whether they like it or not spreadsheets word docs etc are just ubiquitous parts of existing in society at this point you're gonna need to reach for these tools eventually just to apply for jobs or do homework
