trm42··on Apple's Hypercard website redirects to the Wikipedia article
Oooh, Manhole <3 <3 <3

Only problem with the Archive.org setup is that you need to use System 6.0.* or really early System 7 to get the animation timing correct. The slow and sluggish frame by frame animation with later System versions is so annoying and ruining my childhood memories ;D

trm42··on How Checkers Was Solved
Awesome story and well written.
trm42··on JRR Tolkien book Beren and Lúthien published after 100 years
These new books are just longer versions of the Silmarillion stories. I did read the first one (Children of Hurin, I think) and decided to skip the rest.

Especially if you've read the multiple variations of the stories in Christopher Tolkien's History of Middle-Earth series, you'll be really, really familiar with the repetition.

trm42··on The broken promise of Web Components
It starts to sound like browsers should support JSX natively...
trm42··on Whatever happened to Winamp?
Nowadays there's Vox music player for Mac which more or less mimics Winamp somewhat. There's not that much of selection for Mac outside of Spotify and iTunes so this is awesome:)

https://vox.rocks/mac-music-player

I'm not affiliated to Vox in any way but it's nice :)

trm42··on PCMCIA History: From Laptops to CableCards
You forgot the most prominent feature of PCMCIA/PC Card: You can stuff them inside of the laptop instead of carrying bunch of USB dongles and cables.

For storage expansion this was easy way to get more space but of course network cards required additional dongle for the RJ45 connector etc. But still the idea was awesome :)

trm42··on From OS X to Ubuntu
Yep, part of the reason I commented. Also the reason I listed some PITAs regarding LR. The author of the article didn't really describe his workflow regarding raws and jpegs so if he doesn't do really big edits, maybe he doesn't have the same problems as I do.

I truly like the idea of Darktable, but converting existing photo library to Darktable is big and problematic job and the workflow + UX feels really painful.

Sure there are other apps with great Algorithms for RAW editing like Capture One but that's another workflow/UX killer. Lightroom is actually quite awesome compromise between the quality, workflow and UX.

trm42··on From OS X to Ubuntu
Used Linux before really started photography hobby. After a while of fumbling with additional WinXP desktop for Lightroom 1-3, decided to start using my work Macbook for photography as well and it has made my life a lot easier. One reason being that keeping laptops working with Linux is PITA.

Lightroom is amazing piece of software for its purpose, but the vendor lock-in of 9 years of raws stored and edited() with Lightroom means I'll need some LR machine unless I want to create my photo library again. On the other hand I haven't seen other as well streamlined photography workflow + raw application.

Of course I can export the good photos as JPEGs/Tiffs out of LR but then I'll miss the non-destructive history of edits and have to rework metadata etc...

trm42··on When Finnish Teachers Work in America's Public Schools
Please take into account that the Finnish health care and getting kids to school etc is free compared to the US system, so 40-50k wage in Finland is fine. Not sure how much more those add, but would guess something like 20k.
trm42··on Street-Legal ebikes are underpowered
From the tone of the article, it sounds like the author should buy some enduro motorcycle and forget ebikes completely. Problem solved, move along.
trm42··on How Apple Alienated Mac Loyalists
 Old-timer here: they have alienated loyalists before and they will do it again. They're not afraid of change.

The bigger problem is that there's not that much of alternatives for many. If one wants to concentrate on making things with computer instead of making computer to work, Linux* isn't that good option and no, Windows isn't an option still...

* I'm still missing the windowing and Finder of Mac OS Classic ;-) For desktops and servers Linux is usually fine but laptops are PITA + there's still no Adobe apps for Linux.

trm42··on Skype multiple service outage notification
And all those idiots who started converting Lync to "Skype for business" as well. In addition of the nowadays really quirky working Skype, I have bunch of Lync/Skype for business apps installed as well and they are even more horrible and PITA than the Skype.
trm42··on Hyper 1.0.0
Looks cool, but for some weird reason I was expecting something related to Apple's HyperCard <3 :D
trm42··on Ask HN: Why is Notepad++ not ported to mac yet?
Text Wrangler is lot nicer than Notepad++ for random ascii/script stuff. For bigger projects, use Sublime or some other IDE(ish) editor.

In addition to big IDE I have TW running all the time for notes etc.

trm42··on Ask HN: Disappointed by the new Macbook, what alternatives do we have?
KTerm of KDE is quite similar to iTerm2. Using them both bot not that much iTerm's special features.
trm42··on The ‘Dyson Sphere’ mystery deepens: Star keeps dimming
Unicron, devourer of worlds!
trm42··on Flickr is shutting down Marketplace, its commercial photo licensing program
Sounds like my use case for Flickr differs a lot from the ones mentioned here. I don't store everything there (Over a terabyte of raw photos etc is not worth publishing;-), only photos I want to publish as an enthusiast photographer and see other photographers photos + talk about them. For that Flickr still trumps over 500px, Facebook* and any other service I've seen. Would've probably quit photography as a hobby multiple times without Flickr.

* Facebook is where other people are and there are some good groups but for really following other photographers it sucks + FB molesting JPEGs is just horrible.

trm42··on OS/2 resurrected: Blue Lion becomes ArcaOS, details emerge for upcoming release
Linux and OS/2 ran on similar specs. Used both of them (triple booting with DOS etc) with 10 MB of ram happily and without too much of swap trashing with XFree86 and even with the early KDE.
trm42··on Jolla C, a new Sailfish OS phone from Jolla
Well what did you expect if you bought a phone made in 2013 and which was low-end phone with mid-level price even at that time (costed about 400 € and felt like a 200€ smart phone).

Nowadays it's either Android or iPhone. Pick your poison.

The specs for Jolla C are quite limited, but maybe with their OS those specs are enough. At least now they gotten better display panel (IPS) because the one of the biggest fails the first Jolla phone had, was the display.

Jolla C looks like it's priced at zero-margin. They just want to have lots of developers at this point. And the 169 € sounds a lot better than 400€

trm42··on Jolla C, a new Sailfish OS phone from Jolla
Well some of the new Microsoft Lumia phones had the ability to work as a desktop computer. Look how well it did for Microsoft ;p

The idea is cool but the computers and smart phones are so cheap everyone has somekind of computer (or access to one) + smart phone. This would've awesome in the mid-2000s, though ;-)

+ Haven't seen a device that really solves different usage patters of mobile phone and desktop in the same UI. If you're going suggest Windows 8-10, I'm sorry to break it to you but they failed miserably.

trm42··on Intel’s Contributions to the Windows Bridge for iOS: The Accelerate Framework
It's awesome how the old monopolistic companies like Intel and Microsoft are really trying to get developers back to their platforms in any way possible, like trying to behave nice and create migration/adaptation layers and offer some kind of "port theory" tools.

It's interesting to see how far they are willing to go...

trm42··on Kid Pix – The Early Years
It was awesome application then. My dad purchased it and it was lots of fun for long time. It was one of those magical apps that opened the world for 7-8 year olds :) The rubber stamps enabled you to create whole worlds etc.

Got my first baby last year and when I started looking for good iOS apps for children, I first tried to search for Kid Pix and was disappointed that there's no iOS version.

I know my toddler is too young for that kind of sophistication but still would buy iOS version of the app :)

trm42··on Google Cardboard Plastic
Better than I expected :D
trm42··on Kraft Reveals Revamped Mac and Cheese, 50M Boxes Later
In many cases companies are not advertising "gluten free" as it may require additional tests and certifications which cost extra money and extra effort, especially smaller companies avoid these unless it's really important for their brand.
trm42··on Google pays $250M for Sunnyvale offices where 3,000 could work
Heh, read first Sunnydale. Would've been awesome to have offices next to Hellmouth.
trm42··on Maxed Out: A Closer Look at Coffee Consumption in Finland
Finn here, although just drinking tea :p Can't understand why people drink and drink that much of bad coffee and bad beer in Finland. There are good artesan beers in Finland but those are not consumed that much compared to the classical Finnish big brand lagers.

(somewhat offtopic:) Had a conversation with a Korean girl living in Finland and she complained about the quality of tea in Finland. I ROTFLMAOed as the tea culture in Finland started basically in the 90s with horribly over aromated teas compared to longer than dynasties tea cultures of Asia. Nowadays there's bunch of nice tea shops at least in the bigger cities, though.

trm42··on The Pyra Linux Handheld Computer Has Now a Working Prototype
Even though Sailfish OS is quite nice and Linuxy, the original Jolla phone was published on 2013 and even then its hardware wasn't that good (especially the display), so until there's some modern hardware actually running Sailfish and the price is ~400 €, there's no point of talking about any Jolla/Sailfish phones :(
trm42··on Free Windows XP-10 VirtualBox/Parallels Images from Microsoft
Using one of those newer Retina MBPs which one cannot be upgraded in any way. The only disk expansion for these is the micro sdhc card hack (like this: http://9to5mac.com/2014/05/23/three-hacks-for-adding-permane...).

On your model you can even opt for bigger main SSD and probably replace dvd with another SSD like this: https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Installing+MacBook+Pro+17-Inch+... . Oh the sweet upgradeability! <3

I have plenty of disk space but my photography hobby is eating most of it and the first thing that gets thrown away is the 14 Gb vmdk (this time it's Windows 8.1 + IE11).

Next one is probably 8 gigabytes of MS Office 2016. How can Office eat 8 gigabytes? :D (Compared to LibreOffice's 700 Mb or Office 2011 1,3 Gb.

And why worry about the new IEs and Edge? Microsoft says they support standards and so forth ... ;-D

trm42··on This is why people fear the Internet of Things
Don't have any experience with PCI compliance but I assume this kind of stuff _should_ remove the most idiotic security holes.
trm42··on Free Windows XP-10 VirtualBox/Parallels Images from Microsoft
So the main point seems to be MS has killed modern.ie -site and redirect to this dev.windows.com site. Still useful once in a while although the big disk images are PITA to download and setup. I have better uses for my laptop SSD than to fill it with different IEs and Windowses :p
