trinovantes··on Silent crisis of soaring excess deaths in Britain is only tip of the iceberg
You can start by paying doctors/nurses a better wage for the shit they have to put up with for the last 2 years

Our Ontario government capped nurse pay to 1% per year which is effectively a 8% paycut/year given the current inflation

trinovantes··on Ask HN: Is it time for AI to start replacing doctors?
I doubt you'll ever find an insurance company willing to underwrite that risk
trinovantes··on Find Unused CSS Across Entire Web Project [Local]?
You can try automating it with puppeteer by programmatically accessing the coverage data

    await page.coverage.startCSSCoverage()
    await page.goto('https://example.com/')
    await page.coverage.stopCSSCoverage()
trinovantes··on Is the Windows Bridge for iOS Projects Dead?
It's funny when you look at the contribution graph and see that most of the activity happened in the typical tenure length at tech companies (1-2 years)

trinovantes··on We’re Deleting Some Inactive Accounts
To be more precise, all of these conditions must be met to be deleted:

> Account is inactive (see Definition above)

> Account did not purchase any game currency in its lifetime

> Account did not receive any game currency in its lifetime

> Account has played fewer than 20 hours

> Account does not own any rare limited edition game entitlements

trinovantes··on Researchers: World can reach 100% renewable energy system by/before 2050
I'd say NIMBYism is also a big contributor. Renewable energy farms are rarely located near population centers and convincing rural people to sell their land to generate/transport energy to urban centers is a multiyear process with single holdouts stalling projects. The alternative of invoking eminent domain is also politically unattractive.
trinovantes··on Tell HN: Unpaid home assignments are not ok
Historically, professional accreditation came from the need to protect the general public from harm. Random people can't use "doctor" or "engineer" in their job titles because the consequences of incompetence means loss of life. For most software development jobs, the worst outcome is probably user inconvenience.
trinovantes··on Think Different(ly) – Development Done on Windows
The only downside is the Win11 taskbar

It's been a huge productivity loss trying to switch to a different window of the same program

trinovantes··on Ask HN: Do you trust digital voting for the election of the President?
No and I never will

A basic requirement for democracy is the process must be transparent and understandable for everyone. Telling non-technical people to "trust" the machine is how you erode it.

Paper voting is dead simple: you (and your opponents) can observe the count in person. Electronic voting has far too many potential attack vectors. Once a weakness is found, you can potentially overturn an entire election. At least with paper ballets, you have to potentially bribe everyone which is infeasible on a large scale or democracy has already fallen.

trinovantes··on To meet demand, US needs 4.3M more apartments by 2035
Here's a crazy idea: a basic human need shouldn't be an investment vehicle.
trinovantes··on Discord has forums now
Unless Google/Discord have some bulk api access agreement, I doubt anything in Discord will be indexable. Sadly I think the adoption is inevitable because Discord is just much more convenient for users.
trinovantes··on Astro 1.0 – a web framework for building fast, content-focused websites
One thing that's not too clear to me is if it's possible to use existing UI libraries. For example, to install Vue's Quasar component library I need to run

    import { createApp } from 'vue'
    import { Quasar } from 'quasar'
    app = createApp()
    app.use(Quasar)
But since astro abstracts away the root Vue application, I don't see how this is possible anymore.

Astro might make sense for a blog where you don't need a full blown component library but for any other web application, I'm skeptical of its capabilities.

trinovantes··on Discord has forums now
Can't you access Discord in a browser?
trinovantes··on GitHub deleted accounts of people who contributed to Tornado Cash repos
Unless they enabled PGP signed commits, can't you just forge their commits?
trinovantes··on Next generation play-to-earn games are here. Gamers are still skeptical
There's research that suggests games where the player doesn't play for the sake of playing are bad for mental health e.g. playing due to FOMO, external rewards, etc. [1]

> It wasn’t the quantity of gaming, but the quality that counted... if they felt they had to play, they felt worse.

trinovantes··on Tell HN: Debian blocks access to wiki pages from VPN IPs
I guess whatever spam control system they use is simply blocking all VPNs rather than more fine grained check if the request is for read/write
trinovantes··on Tell HN: Debian blocks access to wiki pages from VPN IPs
> What is the benefit?

Reduce spam and abuse

trinovantes··on Ask HN: Why don't we pay stackoverflow or medium?
Back in the day, expertsexchange was a paid version of stackoverflow. Needless to say, it was not as successful (their awkward name did not help)
trinovantes··on Gitlab U-turns on deleting dormant projects after backlash
OP is talking about obtaining an username from an inactive user. If they were able to obtain the username, they effective took over the namespace.
trinovantes··on Gitlab U-turns on deleting dormant projects after backlash
Gitlab's approach also sounds like an easy way to hijack dormant projects to inject malicious code and let unsuspecting users download "updates"
trinovantes··on Ask HN: How concerned should individuals be about monkeypox and what can we do?
Remember to wipe after using equipment at the gym
trinovantes··on California funding 3% down first time buyer program with $1B a year
They could at least stop preventing people that may want to build

Reforming zoning laws may not be the panacea but it's a vital first step

trinovantes··on Canada Will Implement a New Luxury Tax on High-Priced Planes and Vehicles
Can't tax the ultra rich's income because they don't have any

Can't tax the ultra rich's wealth because there's no political will and can get complicated really quick

Taxing their consumption is probably the only thing left

In Denmark, the vehicle tax has a 150% marginal rate

trinovantes··on Diablo Immortal brought $100M to developers in less than two months
That horse armor from Elder Scrolls was truly a pandora's box
trinovantes··on The Node ecosystem still has tooling problems
I've used webpack for several years now and have written custom plugins to accomplish what I need. esbuild-loader gives great typescript performance almost on par with vite so I don't see the need to learn a new build system.

Also, there's no official Vue 3 support for esbuild so that's a problem for some of my projects

trinovantes··on The Node ecosystem still has tooling problems
I just checked my most recent frontend project that uses Typescript as much as possible. Here's how it works:

- src/.ts: Compile with esbuild in webpack

- tests/.test.ts: Compiled with babel

- jest.config.ts: Compiled with ts-node

- webpack.config.ts: Compiled with ts-node

In an ideal world, one tool should do everything but I doubt that will ever happen

trinovantes··on AMD passes Intel in market cap
I think they're referring to how AMD threw everything out and started from scratch on their Zen CPU architecture in 2012 (when their stock was near rock bottom)
trinovantes··on Show HN: Doxx Me – See how doxxable your phone number is
Seems my info came from the massive Facebook breach last year
trinovantes··on An Introduction to Multithreading in Node.js
I wonder why node call workers "threads" when they're actually os processes spawned like fork()

   const { isMainThread } = require('worker_threads')
   if (isMainThread) {
       const { Worker } = require('worker_threads')
       const worker = new Worker(__filename, { workerData: {})
   } else {
       const { workerData } = require('worker_threads')
   }
