trinovantes··on Wideboard: Render millions of lines of text at 60 FPS using WebGL (2013)
WebGL was really cool when I first saw it. Today, it's basically a wrapper around OpenGL 3.0 ES.

It's too bad development has stopped in favor of WebGPU but it's still in beta which means we won't have access to GPU ray tracing in the browser for at least 1-2 more years

trinovantes··on You need to earn over $200k to afford a typical home in these 8 U.S. cities
Page 3 of this doc [1] lists the definition of city by state

Apparently most states recognize a place as a city if it just has a few hundred residents/voters. There's plenty of abandoned houses (thus $0 homes) in places that fit these definitions.

trinovantes··on Mojo.js is a port of Perl's Mojolicious to TypeScript
In the case of Express vs alternatives benchmarks, you're looking at differences in the sub 1ms range as these benchmarks simply test how much "hello world" you can return per second
trinovantes··on Mojo.js is a port of Perl's Mojolicious to TypeScript
The first thing I consider when looking at Express-alternatives is if the API is fully compatible because almost every other 3rd party library/package (e.g. sentry) expects the Express object. This doesn't look like the case as I have no idea what the mojo context object is.

On a side note, I'm surprised to see frameworks trying to use benchmarks against Express as a key feature. Framework overhead is insignificant when requests delays are mostly due to the database/network.

trinovantes··on 100s of Twitter employees leaving after Musk's 'extremely hardcore' work demands
The world cup should be a good stress test for Twitter's automated systems
trinovantes··on CSS: Not understanding the behaviour of position:static?
position:static is just resetting it to the default value. You should be explicit and use position:unset instead

Without 'static' in mobile, it would be position:absolute

trinovantes··on Mom handcuffed, jailed for 8-year-old son walking half a mile
Speed limits (in North America) are simply the 85th percentile speed of drivers on a specific type of road. The onus should be on the civil engineer who designed the road to make it physically impossible to go 150 in the first place - e.g. narrow/curved lanes, speed bumps, concrete bollards, trees on the sides, etc. If roads are actually designed properly, then speed limit laws are unnecessary because drivers will naturally slow down to avoid damaging their vehicle or themselves.
trinovantes··on U.S. FBI director says TikTok poses national security concerns
For most people, it's probably harmless. However there's still risks like:

- Run facial recognition on the vast amount of public footage to find political dissidents that tried to go off grid

- Identify when political figures and their family congregate to determine if something important will happen in the near future

trinovantes··on Deno 1.28: Featuring 1.3M New Modules
patch-package is a tool for this specific purpose

https://www.npmjs.com/package/patch-package

You commit your changes as a diff text file and add the patch-package command to your post-install hook so it runs after every install

My main use for it is fixing other packages' package.json exports field and Typescript definitions

trinovantes··on Deno 1.28: Featuring 1.3M New Modules
Downside is you can't use patch-package

Even the --node-module-dir flag just creates a symlink to your home directory cache so you can't do per-project package fixes (besides forking and rehosting the package)

I'm also not sure how/if it supports packages that require compiling binaries like sqlite or playwright without post-install hooks

trinovantes··on Show HN: A Memcached client for modern Node.js
You should really have Typescript definitions and ESM exports if you're creating a modern nodejs package
trinovantes··on Which face is real?
I found the professional headshots hardest to tell since real ones purposely bokeh blur the background which gives the glowy edges around the hair
trinovantes··on Tell HN: Duty of care
In some jurisdictions, software engineer is a protected job title that requires professional licensing (ever wonder why Google only hires "developer" in their Waterloo office but "engineer" elsewhere?). IIRC the engineer that wrote the code for the Volkswagen scandal was jailed for failing his professional obligations.

For OP's case case, I'd assume/hope a professional engineer would need to sign off on this change or be able to tell the VP to f off.

trinovantes··on Ask HN: My political party knows I haven't voted yet. How?
I'm surprised information about who voted is publicly available

Will businesses start offering discounts/bonuses for people that show proof that they've voted (under the guise of rewarding those that did their civic duty), but only in areas that are heavily biased towards one party? Technically it's available to everyone but only easily accessible to those that voted for the business' preferred party.

trinovantes··on Blurhash: A compact representation of a placeholder for an image
It's unlikely since the smallest possible jpg 10x10 jpg is just under 300 bytes. You might be able to squeeze out a few dozen bytes if you tried multiple browser supported formats (e.g. jpg, webp, png, gif) and pick the smallest one since they might be better at encoding blurhash's gradient effect.
trinovantes··on Ask HN: Why did GPG / PGP fail?
I gave up PGP after forgetting to back up my contacts' public keys when I reinstalled my OS

Also xkcd 538 exists

trinovantes··on Blurhash: A compact representation of a placeholder for an image
Both formats are trying to encode the parameters of cosine functions except jpg is implemented natively in web browsers, likely with SIMD instructions. Is the ~200 bytes in savings per image really worth the extra computation cost you're passing onto your users?
trinovantes··on Blurhash: A compact representation of a placeholder for an image
It seems more like a modified version of jpg compression which also uses DCT.

Why not just downsample the original image to 10x10 jpg and encode it as base64 so it can be directly used in an <img> without blocking your main JS thread to decode the image? Apply css blur if you like the soft gradient effect.

trinovantes··on Blurhash: A compact representation of a placeholder for an image
Is the space savings of using a custom base83 encoding really worth it when modern browsers can natively support base64 image encodings?

trinovantes··on Rise of generative AI will be comparable to the rise of CGI in the early 90s

trinovantes··on Ask HN: What piece of code/codebase blew your mind when you saw it?

trinovantes··on Russia says UK navy blew up Nord Stream, London denies involvement
Putin may have an interest in destroying the pipelines himself

Inside Russia, there's probably some sentiment to end the war, dispose/blame everything on Putin, and resume the gas trade. If Putin removes that option, his opponents will have little to gain from getting rid of him as they'll inherit a mess with no way to rebuild.

trinovantes··on All About E: A Language That Infiltrated JavaScript
There's still non-const enums generating runtime code

I think it would be huge if some future nodejs/web browser can parse native TS so we no longer need to deal with the mess of dev tools like ts-node and babel and wonder why some folder structure or sourcemap is not working

trinovantes··on Test scores are not irrelevant
Said test can also bias against the poor depending on how it's created. It can ask questions based on subtleties that only private schools/tutors have the time to cover or on life experiences that only upper middle class realistically have experienced.

Neither system is perfect but I think the purely SAT approach creates too much unnecessary stress for high school students when there are other proxies for determining future success.
