trin_on Ask HN: What's a reasonable salary at a Berlin startup?

no ... i have no clue but i dont think i know anyone seriously making 10k as a software developer ... i think i dont know anyone making above 5k in a real startup (and that includes various technologies and experience levels)

trin_on Ask HN: What's a reasonable salary at a Berlin startup?

well not high for europe, maybe berlin but in hamburg 5 years of expertise could very well get you 60k+

trin_on Y Combinator Summer 2013 Demo Day, Batch 2

Wow Estimote sounds horrible. Who the hell would want that as a customer???

trin_on Is a Nest worth the money?

my hat is off to you if you are able to sell all the 16 hours that you're awake every day to someone for 100$ each without dropping in productivity and maintaining mental well beeing.

trin_on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (August 2013)

And are you looking for a direct employment of someone from europe or a contractor agreement? it is my understanding that it's quite a bit of paperwork for US companies if they have no local branch in a memberstate of the european union.

i'm asking because it sounds interesting (and i'm german ;) ) and i'm looking for a new gig as a software developer right now.

trin_on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (August 2013)

Could you elaborate a little bit on the industry you are servicing and/or the specific problem domains?

also: where is the company located (i'm asking for tax, health insurance reasons etc.) ?

trin_on Ask HN: What's the oldest piece of software still in use?

just a heads-up for you. 1&1 will disable php4 too this year! ;)

trin_on Quickly generate product screenshots in realistic environments

awesome service!

any chance of getting a good ol' boring office version maybe with a real monitor or just a laptop on a desk? the kind of people i would use this for really dont go for "macbook air with a notepad in the garden"

trin_on Open Pixel-art Platformer

seems like this is "only" the art and the .cfg files for usage with the anura [1] engine.

trin_on Open Pixel-art Platformer

i think there is. the .cfg files include some kind of instructions, probably for the engine.

trin_on Ask HN: Developer laptop under $1500?

plus much more ram, faster drives and the fact that newer cpus get more done even at comparable clockspeeds ... and there's your 60x

trin_on Ask HN: Why Does It Take "10 Days" To Be Unsubscribed From Marketing Emails?

manual mail list management. and i'm not joking. i know of various companys that have some intern or apprentice doing their mailing list management by hand if they come around to do it.

trin_on Confirmed: The NSA is Spying on Millions of Americans

you dont have to tell the police when you move. only the local goverment (Einwohnermeldeamt)

trin_on How Clash of Clans earns $500,000 a day with in-app purchases

LoL is horrible compared to Dota2 in this regard. You cant play every hero and with added points you get addex abilities. Dota2 micro-transactions only pay for cosmetic items that you can (mostly) also get via trading with other players or as a drop after each finished game.

trin_on Facebook Group captures a fourth(10,000) of it's intended audience

There is something from ebay at least for germany that does exactly this and is 100% Free ebay-kleinanzeigen.de and it is VERY popular. The Facebook groups still exist and are used.

trin_on Ask HN: Why do famous technical co-founders tend to fade away?

its probably not that he stopped playing with technology but that he stopped beein involved with technology that is marketed and sold and known.

not everybody craves the recognition and thus they might not sell/opensource everything they do. i for my part would be very content with my private metalworking/electronics(woodworking shop and just do stuff that I want/need just to scrap it eventually if i want to.

trin_on Lulu: An App No One Should Accept

Besides the sexist nature of the app (imagine the outcry if it would be an app to rate girls... "sexist startup guys treating women like netflix movies") what the hell is their business model? they collected 2.5 million for a free app, without a business model and a VERY questionable legal standing (if not in the us almost anywhere else in the world)

trin_on Opera will use Blink

not to be too off topic but it seems to me that he's great live when he's not acting all kinds of crazy because two weeks ago someone in the vicinity of the stage ate meat.

trin_on Two Months of Soylent

and it tastes good! in fact i like all their products :)

trin_on Ask HN: Inline assembly. When do I need it?

you'll know it when you need it ... seriously. unless you really know what you want and what you are doing the chances of outsmarting the compiler are very very slim.

there's a rather old but good video about this very topic that i just remembered:

http://media.ccc.de/browse/conferences/camp2007/cccamp07-en-...

and i think these are the corresponding slides: http://www.fefe.de/know-your-compiler.pdf

trin_on Show HN: Demiba - Get the most out of YouTube music

"Demiba finds automatically the best quality versions for each song"

sorry but on multiple tests i'm getting obscure solo-guitar covers of songs and sometimes shoddy quality live performances. just because something is in 720p doesnt mean its good quality!

example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=S...!

thats probably not the best white of the clash - white riot on youtube

trin_on Germany orders changes to Facebook real name policy

facebook has an office in hamburg and iirc it is in the same building as qype(recently aquired by yelp)

trin_on Germany orders changes to Facebook real name policy

they do. studivz plays ther same role os/2 and or anything else played in the microsoft monopoly era. they are at this point a niche site that is almost dead.

trin_on Google acquires BufferBox (YC S12)

Funny that you would say that. There are a lot of us start ups (even yc ones!) that copy companyies/ideas that are proven and established here in Germany. The package stuff s just one example. All the ride sharing start ups that were hyped some time ago basically copy "mitfahrgelegenheit.de" ( now the company s known as carpooling) wh have been dong this for nearly ten years now. Public bike sharing is another example.

It's easy to just blame rocket Internet and pretend like that's all of German innovation/startp scene. Packaging and bike sharing weren't even pioneered by startups but by huge formerly state owned companies who are Slow and boring n the Public eye

trin_on Netflix CEO: Amazon Losing Up to $1 Billion a Year on Streaming Video

trin_on Ask HN: what is your recommended 3 monitor setup

why should he get that matrox thing if a <150€ ati gpu can run 3 monitors without any problems on its own? the TripleHead2Go seems to be something you'd use for a laptop.

trin_on If I Were Google, I Wouldn’t Release A Native iOS 6 Maps App For Six Months

the maps for the town i'm living in (250k people, state capital in germany) are not entirely accurate. the positions of the listed businesses especially. some are downright false and some are misplaced by sometimes 400-500m.
