trident5000··on Apple discriminated against US citizens in hiring, DOJ says
Of course thats it. Are you this naive? By the way a judge blocked it.
trident5000··on Apple discriminated against US citizens in hiring, DOJ says
Except only one of these groups gets penalized for the behavior.
trident5000··on Apple discriminated against US citizens in hiring, DOJ says
Companies complain the H1B program is needed because the talent doesnt exist. Thats just a lie to get cheaper labor.
trident5000··on What if we replace guns and bullets with bows and arrows? (2022)
Not to dismiss the entire HN community (theres some good discussion on here and it probably swings a bit older than most places) but the majority of people who even have the time to vote and comment on the internet tend to be younger and pretty naive. This is especially true on places like Reddit.
trident5000··on Young people would sacrifice other perks for a 4-day workweek
Sounds like a lifestyle choice. Stop packing into cities like a can of sardines and it wont be an issue. Being inflexible to literal physics and reality is a personal issue.
trident5000··on Young people would sacrifice other perks for a 4-day workweek
The financial aspect of owing a home, as we know, is more complicated than wages and home prices. Theres also the debt aspect and juxtaposed interest rate.

In any case, the home ownership hasnt budged much in over 50 years. People just like to complain like they always have.

trident5000··on Young people would sacrifice other perks for a 4-day workweek
lol good luck telling that to this this community who are frustrated they cant afford a home in the most niche place on earth and refuse to live anywhere else.
trident5000··on Young people would sacrifice other perks for a 4-day workweek
I think its bifurcated. Theres ambitious and lazy people in every generation.
trident5000··on Young people would sacrifice other perks for a 4-day workweek
I keep hearing this but home ownership percentage is comparable to past generations when you actually look at the data.

https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/RHORUSQ156N

Also gen z has surpassed millennials and genx in home ownership (with comparable timing).

""In 2022, 30% of 25-year-olds owned a home. At the same age 28% of millennials, and 27% of Gen Xers owned homes, according to real estate brokerage, Redfin.""

https://www.marketplace.org/2023/09/14/how-are-gen-zers-buyi...

Im more inclined to believe the lazy mentality is from lifestyle and cultural stemming. Its cool to not care or try. And according to instagram if you're not a millionaire by age 25 then you're a loser. So why even try?

That being said I see nothing wrong with a 4 day work week.

trident5000··on 'It's quite soul-destroying': how we fell out of love with dating apps
Absolutely. Its probably time the govt steps in and shifts patent law to favor cures over treatments. There will be incredible resistance to this from lobbyists though.

Other thing they need to do is eliminate the requirement that all new treatments reviewed by the FDA meet the requirement of a "disease". Theres a lot of things people want out of lets say gene therapy that is not strictly a disease but benefits your health in the end. And I dont know why cosmetic or enhancing treatments should not be considered as well. They need to loosen up.

FDA approval for (gene therapy for instance) is taking something like 15 years to get approved. And only their narrow definition of whats necessary for the public is even considered. This is an absurd situation. Govt red tape is literally killing us.

trident5000··on 'It's quite soul-destroying': how we fell out of love with dating apps
"predatory monetization"

Yeah...the goal of these dating apps is not to have you happily be in a relationship and stop paying them money.

trident5000··on 13 States join the IRS direct-file test after tax prep firms dropped the ball
Just have a sales tax and an inheritance tax and forget collecting taxes from millions of people every year.
trident5000··on Hacker leaks millions more 23andMe user records on cybercrime forum
A honey pot is just a place where sensitive and valuable information is centrally stored.

They can be unavoidable but need to be well protected. Most companies fail at this.

All it takes is one employee to pip install the wrong library or fall victim to a phishing attack or 3rd party vendor attack and its over. And on a long enough time scale, it happens.

trident5000··on Hacker leaks millions more 23andMe user records on cybercrime forum
The issue is 23andMe is a honey pot. Thats fundamentally whats at play here.
trident5000··on Goldman Sachs reportedly said Apple Card savings account was a mistake
The issue as stated in the article that I'm pretty sure nobody actually read, is that consumer finance is a logistical nightmare they wernt prepared for. It had nothing to do with Apple.
trident5000··on Goldman Sachs reportedly said Apple Card savings account was a mistake
This has nothing to do with the situation.
trident5000··on John Carmack on AI
This is what people who have never built anything like to say.

Bezos as an example built a great service. An exchange of value between willing customers and what he created happens repeatedly. Therefore he earned the billions. Thats how it works. The more value you create for the most people makes you more money. And I cant think of a more fair system.

trident5000··on OpenAI is exploring making its own AI chips
The economy is in an interesting place when in house chip making efforts or startups are popping up now. It used to be a task like landing on the moon. Still a difficult effort but it looks like this industry is expanding. It speaks to the rapid nature of technology in general where insurmountable tasks over time become closer to trivial.
trident5000··on John Carmack on AI
The summer riots that were fueled by people not needing to be anywhere.
trident5000··on John Carmack on AI
People who receive money dont necessarily expect and demand to sit on their ass. It just happens to them and they got lucky.

And theres not a "pass" you or anyone else is entitled to give. Its not your property or family matter.

trident5000··on John Carmack on AI
The vast majority of people who have money didnt inherit it. The vast majority worked for it.

You dont have it because you didnt earn it. Instead you're on the internet demanding like a child that you dont need to work for anything. Thats the difference between people with money and yourself.

trident5000··on John Carmack on AI
We definitely got a small taste of what people do with their time when they are not at work during Covid...and it wasnt pretty.
trident5000··on John Carmack on AI
This view is hilarious. That you think you can sit around and produce nothing while everyone else around you produces everything you need. Or that everyone can stop what they're doing and still provide you with that. You're just lazy with dreams of contributing nothing and thats not admirable. Until the day where robots are literally walking around wiping our ass, people need to do things.
trident5000··on John Carmack on AI
Maybe the work week hasnt shrunk yet, but the amount of goods and services available at an affordable price to the average joe is way up.
trident5000··on John Carmack on AI
Think of it a bit differently. Think of production being so efficient and labor free that producing goods and services is extremely cheap and in turn produces abundance.

Theres a reason why Jamie Dimon is saying people will be working 3 days per week in a generation because of AI.

And its why in capitalistic and technology forward societies the poor are generally better off than every generation prior.

trident5000··on The elderly are becoming homeless at a rate not seen since the Great Depression
Im sure you put a royal effort into that.
trident5000··on The elderly are becoming homeless at a rate not seen since the Great Depression
Im going to have to decline doing a research project for you. Regardless and back to the main point of my comment - the reason 3/4 of water delivery is a public service is from permitting and other red tape primarily. Not because of reasons having to do with pricing.
trident5000··on The elderly are becoming homeless at a rate not seen since the Great Depression
Price controls dont work. This is economics 101 and tested many times in the past and as of recent. All you're doing with artificially constraining price and other regulations is reducing supply in the long run. The issue bubbles and then eventually bursts.

However, the issue in congested areas is a matter of physics and people unwilling to relocate. Its not from renters simply fulfilling the pricing demand. I mean what exactly is the long term play in areas like this? Just keep stacking people on top of each other into infinity? Its obviously not realistic.

trident5000··on The elderly are becoming homeless at a rate not seen since the Great Depression
The only reason they're regulated is because of logistical and permitting issues. Not because they're special for any other reason. If there was private competition for delivering water it might even be cheaper.
trident5000··on The elderly are becoming homeless at a rate not seen since the Great Depression
It shouldnt be allowed for people to raise rent on the property they own? Thats an absurd idea.

People have been complaining about not having the home they want in the location they want since the beginning of mankind.
