trevithick··on How Silicon Valley Is Turning Scientists into Exploited Gig Workers
Still bad for the scientists. They get little money and zero recognition.
trevithick··on Why the US Navy won't blast the Iranians and 'open' Strait of Hormuz
Thank you. I heard about The Guns of August when I was looking for related books after reading A World Undone. Then I forgot about it. I never heard of March of Folly but I'll read them both.
trevithick··on Why the US Navy won't blast the Iranians and 'open' Strait of Hormuz
How does that book fit in the timeline? It was published in 1984.
trevithick··on Cockpit is a web-based graphical interface for servers
Thanks. I like the spirit of this.

I will not assume any liability for damage caused from running this code. Especially if you are running it as root. In fact, we both know that this will cause damage to the system, and that's why you want to try it. You have been warned.

trevithick··on Cockpit is a web-based graphical interface for servers
I need to know more about this.
trevithick··on DIY NAS: 2026 Edition
Topton makes a lot of those router mini PCs. I have an N100 with 4 2.5Gbe ports. It has a serial port too, which is nice. It's been running great for about a year now. Then again, it's from Aliexpress, so who knows if it's even really a Topton.
trevithick··on PicoIDE – An open IDE/ATAPI drive emulator
Interesting, thanks for posting. I never heard of this either and read EDM as

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronic_dance_music

Which kind of makes sense.

trevithick··on PicoIDE – An open IDE/ATAPI drive emulator
This is really cool. I'm glad people are out there making this stuff even if I'll never have a use for it.

What are the use cases for this? I'm guessing retro computing and possibly very old machines tied to very obsolete hardware that can't be virtualized (e.g. manufacturing controls).

trevithick··on How to fix subsystem request failed on channel 0
Sometimes the message is different. I think it depends on the recipient server. Trying to scp to a dropbear ssh server on a router gives

   sh: /opt/libexec/sftp-server: not found
   scp: Connection closed
The -O resolution works.
trevithick··on Baby Shoggoth Is Listening
Yes. I've always planned to stay dead forever after I die. AI is not changing that.
trevithick··on Baby Shoggoth Is Listening
True, my question assumed AI "progress" and adoption follow the hype trajectory. Reality could be closer to the scenario you laid out. The bubble pops, some AI tools maybe improve things in some areas, societal disintegration gets kicked down the road a few years.
trevithick··on Baby Shoggoth Is Listening
I have not heard or read anything about AI that could be construed as positive for an ordinary person. Step one is "lose your job with no possibility of finding another one, but still have to buy stuff to survive." That will also be the last step for a huge number of people. Is there a bull case for some hypothetical regular person with a desk job? I haven't seen one.
trevithick··on Show HN: Halloy – Modern IRC client
I had the same question. I briefly joined the Slackware IRC a long, long time ago when I had questions, but now I wouldn't even know what to do with this client.
trevithick··on Tariffs Are Way Up. Interest on Debt Tops $1T. and Doge Didn't Do Much

trevithick··on Kirigami-inspired parachute falls on target
Six pack rings were the first thing I thought of when I saw the picture. The article says they made the parachutes out of paper and cardboard too, but if history is any guide they'll end up making them from plastic. "What if it rains!?"
trevithick··on Kirigami-inspired parachute falls on target
I hope the paper and cardboard construction they mention is feasible for commercial use. Otherwise I'm picturing a future where drone deliveries are commonplace and these plastic parachutes litter our streets and waterways.
trevithick··on How insurance risk is transformed into investable assets
Very minor nit: "It's clear that we this structure,..."

Cool article, it's a clear explanation of something I never knew about.

trevithick··on Meta’s live demo fails; “AI” recording plays before the actor takes the steps
Also a tangent, but Microsoft was the OG for corporate cringe.

trevithick··on XNEdit – fast and classic X11 text editor
Why do you not want those features? What is your use case?
trevithick··on My Life in Weeks
Why is parent's advice ironic? I, like probably most people, would have more time for relationships I value now if I had followed their advice. Your first sentence reads as if their advice was "earn money at the expense of relationships and well-being" and that isn't the case at all.

trevithick··on 5G networks meet consumer needs as mobile data growth slows
It won't be a problem for them. They'll find a way to make it not enough - disable functionality that people want or need and then charge a subscription fee to enable it. And more ads. Easy peasy.
trevithick··on Steve Meretzky – Working with Douglas Adams on the Hitchhiker's Guide
> Douglas, procrastinator that he was, was already a year past his deadline for delivering the manuscript for So Long And Thanks For All The Fish to his publisher … and he hadn’t yet written a word.

Jesus, I feel anxious just reading that.

trevithick··on Three AM 911 call, 9 AM salesman
Since you brought up the topic--in the snow picture, is the red vehicle on the right an older 4Runner with some kind of pickup truck cap on it? Something that turns it into a Chevy Avalanche configuration.

trevithick··on Ask HN: Every day feels like prison
Your experience is common enough that The Simpsons addressed it.[1] It's interesting to see the positions being taken in this thread. There are supportive comments like yours, and legitimate opposition to OP's advice.

Someone on either side of the argument who follows this advice may find it's not what they expected, for better or worse.

trevithick··on Legal models hallucinate in 1 out of 6 (or more) benchmarking queries
> Im genuinely curuous, how does this work in regular law? Does anyone ever check all the citations, etc?

Yes. At higher levels (state supreme courts and above), there are staff checking every single citation. It's often checked in a paper copy of the original source, which in rare cases could be a book from e.g. the 1700s.
