trevcanhuman··on On the efficacy of online proctoring using Proctorio (2021) [pdf]
I've also used it when I was taking exams for high school. It's pretty bad software if you ask me.

rant/long comment

First of all, they have a 'different' program for each institution, customized for you to 'sign-in' onto your school's auth page. From an institutional perspective it seems clever, since everything you do will most likely be logged along with your session.

Another annoying thing was that there's different versions of the program for 'each' software. E.g. I used the Canvas platform for some exams and the ALEKS platform for math exams.

And they have the same name under the windows programs so I can only really know which one I'm opening from looking at the desktop.

I believe the Lockdown program is using some lame code to keep the program window 'active'. I never really tried to do any programming behind it. But I do remember that I had some AutoHotkey scripts running for completely unrelated stuff.

On another note, I read their privacy policy and it seems very vague. I wonder if they can get away with letting a stranger view my face for two hours.

trevcanhuman··on 4.2 Gigabytes, Or: How to Draw Anything
ha! Hadn't thought about it that way.

But only so much can be encoded through history. I'd love to see a sci-fi movie combined with the butterfly effect. A somewhat advanced civilization in the past and another (maybe present) civilization where people try to find out stuff about the other one, maybe they're successful at the beginning at depicting how they were but they start to think they know everything and the whole perspective of the civilization changes.

trevcanhuman··on 4.2 Gigabytes, Or: How to Draw Anything
That's very thoughtful. Maybe I'll get downvoted but I'll say this: One could just store this on the long-storage tech or in a temp-controlled seed farm in someplace cold with a computer, and english instructions on how to use this. Maybe one day a human (or even another being for that matter!) in the late late future will discover this and wonder what the hell this was about and how it really worked.

@dang i'd recommend changing the title on this one. I think the title is somewhat misleading, since it doesn't really explain what is happening. See [0][1]

Serious question: What do journals actually do ? Do they check the article ? Why is it important for it to be in a journal ?

I don't know much about academic research, fyi.

I think it's also a midway proposal for other reasons. The proposal merely suggests open access but barely specifies anything. I don't want to give the government personal information and enable endless tracking to them just because I want to download a paper.

Also in Latin America. Even though we have nice 4G text messages do take a while to get through, even if my speed test is high!

TelCos just prefer to use the Internet. And I agree.

The iOS Safari Reader view does - most of the time- the trick for me. Disabling javascript altogether (in Safari) works like a charm, at least for NYT articles.

trevcanhuman··on Mental illness, mass shootings, and the politics of American firearms (2015)
Read the parent of my comment. I was addressing bullying.

But yeah, it's true. One could argue that the school shooter was doing this for himself, which of course isn't something I'd wish on anyone. I think that these teenagers feel helpless, without any purpose in life. I'm not saying it's the worst time to be alive, but the mass appeal of no-religion, being agnostic is a real problem. I even doubt if I should continue being agnostic at times. Every once in a while I lose purpose and really haven't found a good way to cope with it.

Generally speaking, I think the cause of these shootings comes down to the feeling of helplessness and not feeling useful to society.

trevcanhuman··on Mental illness, mass shootings, and the politics of American firearms (2015)
I agree. Yet part of the problem is that your future kinda depends on it. You could be cataloged as having 'mental issues' for punching a guy in the face, even if it was for self defense. But yeah, I guess your point still stands since we've lost our sense of what's right and standing up for ourselves. The "Fine, I'll do it myself" meme would definitely apply here.
trevcanhuman··on Mental illness, mass shootings, and the politics of American firearms (2015)
I guess we've lost our sense of individual justice. Standing up for ourselves, making what's right on our mind even if it means consequences.
trevcanhuman··on Mental illness, mass shootings, and the politics of American firearms (2015)
I think you have a great point, yet something that I haven't seen anyone talk about is scale. The scale of the schools in the United States is enormous. I hear about 2000,3000, 5000-student schools.

Some family's studied in the U.S., and even their middle school and elementary is 2000 students ! That's enormous, gigantic!

Here in Mexico schools are small-scale. Education here is much, much smaller scale. I think that the bigger the student population is at the campus, the bigger the chances are of failing at important problems such as bullying, since extreme standardization of these processes creates more problems than genuine solutions. Plus.

trevcanhuman··on Mental illness, mass shootings, and the politics of American firearms (2015)
Yep, standing up on your own is one of the core American values I believe has been lost to the American Education System. Although I have not been to an American high school or Middle School, the school at which I was definitely had western values and taught that violence was and will never be the option. That you oughtta let the _system_ solve it. But the system has a ton of bureaucracy. I think that we let so many things go by because taking justice into your own hands is bad.

Anyways, I digress. But here are some of my thoughts: I just got from a three-day trip to Monterrey, a city in Mexico. This is where my mom and dad went to college. Yet there is this vibe, always, either inside or outside the school that just feels like _everyone_ is always hustling. Making their lives work. Going to big measures to achieve their dreams, whether legal or not. I met a wealthy guy, interesting acquaintance. We talked about life. One of the main things he said to me was that - emphasizing that although it's cliché it's just too true - "the universe is yours. take it."

And this just rings too true for me, I think that our education has decoupled from American values. Or maybe those values were already broken to begin with. My point is, bureaucracy has led us to do unimaginable things and not see "action -> result." Yet we were raised by our parents telling us that dreams will come true with hard work and effort. We are all socially forced to follow the rules, not skipping lines, etc. But it feels more and more like those lines are crossed everyday and goals are more important.

trevcanhuman··on Starlink for RVs
Oh, did not know that. so 5G also includes a communication protocol ? E.g. could I make 5G work through 2.4 gHz (WiFi frequency, right ? ) and would it work well ? e.g. gigabit speeds thru 2.4 gHz ? I genuinely don't know, don't mean to make a stupid question.

kinda stupid question: (not meaning to sound as an asshole question) Isn't the mmWave part of 5G itself ? Or what would you define as 5G ?

trevcanhuman··on Starlink for RVs
5G is a technology that is very short-range. If you have a concrete wall between the emitter and the receiver you will get a terrible connection. Maybe 30 mbps vs 500 mbps. Maybe 10 blocks away and you've already lost connection - unless there is another tower within a few blocks. So I don't think it would be feasible for big ISPs. maybe for some specific outdoor camps, yes. But it would require the cost of mainting infrastructure nearby all the RVs, including maintaining a clear view without physical obstructions.

Honestly, I thought that was the joke (see the twitter algorithm[0]). That there actually aren't much insights from Google regular software engineers could relate to. As other comments have said, Google is the company who can afford to fuck up the most.

trevcanhuman··on Plagiarized in a plagiarism atonement essay
It just baffles how much effort as humans of modern education and academia have put into being super mad for using other people's ideas. Sure, I agree that this guy is somewhat the victim and she shouldn't have done that.

But really, how is it that we've come so far as a society and just scream at things like these ? Isn't knowledge supposed to be shared ? Even if it's not properly attributed ? There are plenty of misattributions in Mathematics, theorems who people did not create or develop at all, yet their name has been recited for years and years in elementary and middle schools. Yet teachers will say that plagiarism is bad! But hey, don't worry if we call this theorem like this because this is ok and it's actually not plagiarism. We're literally just regurgitating ideas, as several commenters have said (good luck getting the primary sources for my comment lol).

Also, should my ideas be considered plagiarized even when I thought of them before someone else published them ? Interesting dilema, at least for me.

trevcanhuman··on Teen mental health is plummeting and social media is a major contributing cause [pdf]
> As a side note, "problems occurring" do not mean "they effectively have no future".

Yeah, but why should I solve them ?

Modern media and modern world has taught us that our existence is merely here to satisfy our own needs. Sure, humans' main objective is to prevail the existence of the human species. But why live ?

Why exist ? As a person with (recovering?) depression, I am not motivated enough to contribute to anything at all. Maybe making software is my thing. But what are we? endless Consumption machines ?

I apologize in advance for not sounding optimistic at all. I think that lackthereof religion has brought us to question our existence even more.

With a seemingly more-accessible we've made some things easy (survival, basic needs except mind) and others hard (purpose & happiness, setting expectations).

trevcanhuman··on How I Arrived at Sun as Employee #8
Nice, Jonathan Blow. Although I may not understand the underlying philosophy under which his arguments are made, he's inspired me to challenge ideas that are sometimes given for granted. I'd definitely be interested in working with operating systems or even systems theory, although I haven't put much thought to it.

Using the post increment operator for pointer operations ? Would have never imagined that. I've only seen it used in for loops for no reason at all, really.

trevcanhuman··on Software Jailbreak for Any Kindle
Nice! Seems like a nice-to-have tablet! Does the framerate suck? My mom sometimes uses it to read digital books, but she's kind of tired of having to buy 'official' books through the kindle store, sign in, wait for it to connect to the internet.
