trequartista··on Everything SBF is doing is in singular pursuit of not going to jail
He also funneled almost an equal amount of dark money to Republicans. Plenty of sources for this - https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2022/nov/30/ftx-billi... https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2022/12/sam-bankma...
trequartista··on Jacquard by Google
Shoes, Jackets and Bags powered by the technology is cool and all, but it doesn't say anywhere whether this is waterproof? Are the jackets washable in a washing machine? The gadgets are cool, but there are questions about the real world utility of this.
trequartista··on Some Google Photos videos in backups were sent to strangers in November
My email is firstname.lastname@gmail.com. Both my first and last names are not super common, but off-late I'm seeing multiple people with the same combination when I google my name. I get bank statements from 3 different banks, job offers and even the occasional nude selfie - all intended for someone else. I have tried to reply, click on unsubscribe links - but nothing seems to work. It stops for a few days and it starts again.

trequartista··on Hitting send on the next 15 years of Gmail
Absolutely. I have firstname.lastname@gmail.com. My first and last names are by no means common, but still I get emails, bank statements, job offers(!) and account recovery emails meant for others.
trequartista··on Facebook turned on face recognition silently
"This setting is on, but you can turn it off any time, which applies to features we may add later".

Note the features we may add later part. Facebook is getting creepier by the day.

trequartista··on Chrome Enterprise
While there is Google Play Integration, there is no word on how they plan to integrate the corporate intranet - which is littered with thousands of custom applications ranging from payroll to HR to ticket and incident management.
trequartista··on Google Can't Seem to Tolerate Diversity
Google is in a no-win situation here. Fire the guy - get these kind of reactions about not listening to opposing voices. Not fire the guy - incendiary reactions from the general public.

If Google had not fired the guy, a large majority of women (and men) in Google wouldn't want this guy (as brilliant as he may be) in their teams - that would create an unnecessarily hostile and uncomfortable workplace.

trequartista··on Ask HN: What's your working day like?
Could you elaborate on what does studying medical physics entail? This is the first time I'm hearing about it and I'm curious since this appears to be at the intersection of two unbelievably complex fields (to me at least)
trequartista··on The Chattering Masses (2005)
While the article is specific to Calcutta and the Bengal region, the concept of adda is prevalent in almost the whole of India. Every city, town and even village has a corner (or many such corners in cities) which usually attracts people who come to have a casual and relaxed discussion about anything under the sun and eat some local delicacy.

Check out the movie Brahman Naman (it's on Netflix in the US). This is a coming of age, sex comedy set in 1980s Bangalore and shows the concept of "adda" many times where teenage/college boys hangout, ogle at girls and discuss esoteric quizzing topics.

trequartista··on White House Bars NYT, CNN, and Politico from Briefing

trequartista··on Introducing: The Facebook Journalism Project
Facebook is the cannibal because it's eating the businesses of these newspapers
trequartista··on Alexa: Amazon's Operating System
Don't think that the "operating system" for the internet of things is fully defined yet. Amazon is simply the first and the biggest mover. Google has also launched Home. Apple has Homekit. Interesting to see how it pans out
trequartista··on How One Goldman Sachs Trader Made More Than $100M
The market making exemption of the Volcker Rule is based on RENTD - Reasonably Expected Near Term Demand. So Goldman has to prove that this was the case for the high yield bonds. Proving this could be quite tricky though - because they have to factor in a whole lot of parameters (market maturity, depth, liquidity, product holding periods, macro-economic outlook and the trading desk's estimation of client demand). But I'm sure Goldman has models to track each of these. So all in all, this is quite a windfall
trequartista··on Twitter Is Expected to Field Bids This Week
Kind of surprised Facebook is not interested or at least there's no news of Facebook being interested. Facebook already owns social networking, messaging and photo-sharing. Twitter would fit nicely into this portfolio as a niche for breaking news. Plus this would be an amazing opportunity to build an integrated user profile across all these platforms.

Wonder what the DOJ and the anti-trust guys would think of this though.

trequartista··on This Is Your Life, Brought to You by Private Equity
Does anyone have a few examples of the claims being made here? Like what utilities and services are being owned/managed by PE firms?
trequartista··on Why Uber Engineering Switched from Postgres to MySQL
Wow, this is such a detailed analysis. Having used Postgres and suffered issues with data replication as well as database crashes, this post was really helpful.
trequartista··on Valve – Handbook for New Employees (2012) [pdf]
George Carlin summed this up pretty well - "When does a kid get to sit in a yard with a stick anymore? You know, just sit there with a fucking stick. Do today's kids even know what a stick is?" - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K0MKBdD2FGA
trequartista··on What if financial systems were hacked
Having worked at 2 of these "too big to fail" banks, disaster recovery testing is par for the course now. We would do DR testing every quarter on both the primary and secondary data centers. Common simulation scenarios were - network/disk failures in which case the secondary data center would take over the operations. We would also time how long it took for applications to come back up, with high priority apps (trading, payment etc) being given extreme importance.

trequartista··on Citigroup fined $7m after legit transactions mistaken for test data for 15 years
I have done bluesheet reporting code for another large bank and it is one of the most tedious things you can ever do in software. It's a report of all the trades that the bank does and the SEC can come back and ask for historical data at any point of time. So there's a huge database with feeds coming in from multiple trading systems. Usually these feeds have to be enriched with the right account numbers and so on. This needs lookups to other reference data systems, which frequently are changing because of changing regulations, growing businesses etc. I am not surprised this bug remained undetected for more than 15 years. The guys who coded this initially are probably long gone and nobody did knowledge transition of the fact that some account ranges are not test accounts, even though they look like test accounts.
trequartista··on Banning Sites That Don't Respect Adblock
So far, I think Guardian has the best approach towards ad-blocking. There's a non-intrusive banner message at the bottom of the screen, which says that they know you are using adblock and asks if you would like to support them via a paid subscription.

trequartista··on Terra Bella
Very ambitious. Will be interesting to see how it pans out.

Interestingly, Google acquired Terra Bella in 2014. Even though the domain says google.com, is this an Alphabet subsidiary or part of Google itself?
