tren··on Fable 5.1 Solves the Cyphral Distich, a 370-year-old cipher
It's a shame that I have to run a local model to decipher Opus, but them "dumber" models read far more naturally - https://github.com/gvzdv/claudish-to-english
tren··on FreeInk: Open ecosystem for e-readers
We're using LCP from EDRLab which is an open standard. Other vendors are starting to adopt it and I think Kobo intend to this year too. Basically the LCPL files you download can be opened on any compatible LCP reader.
tren··on Google Books (or similar) all book scans – $200k bounty (2025)
Thanks for the reply. If the books were sold in Tunisian dinar (via Stripe), would you still have the same issues?
tren··on Google Books (or similar) all book scans – $200k bounty (2025)
We sell ebooks in every country, including Tunisia - https://www.ebooks.com/en-tn/. I understand that the price of books is sometimes prohibitive, but it's largely outside our control.
tren··on Show HN: DRM-Free Books
We also do the same at ebooks.com, there's a DRM free section too - https://www.ebooks.com/drm-free
tren··on Gmail thinks I'm stupid, so I left
I agree, it's one of my best value subscriptions. It's especially good if you host a lot of domains, you can link 100 custom domains to a single Fastmail account.
tren··on Kindle loyalists scramble as Amazon turns page on old e-readers
I use a Boox and really like it, but it's definitely not the same price point as a kindle. It has a stylus but I basically use it exclusively for reading.
tren··on Neanderthals survived on a knife's edge for 350k years
My Dad wrote an article about this 25 years ago or so: https://aoi.com.au/LB/LB705/ (How the Neanderthals became the Basques). He would really get a kick out of people reading it (he's 90 now). His website goes back to 96' and it shows.
tren··on A website to destroy all websites
I thought the same when loaded it on mobile. When I went to the desktop version, it is kind of glitchy and the images overlap the text: https://i.postimg.cc/bJgjcDD1/desktop.png
tren··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (December 2025)
I'm building a platform for people in my rare fruit meetup group exchange scions. I've never built a react native app, but with the help of Claude it seems possible to build for the web and iOS/Android apps with minimal experience. Hoping to make it really useful for our group before sharing it with others.

tren··on Show HN: Patio – Rent tools, learn DIY, reduce waste
We have one near my place that I'm a member of, it's run by volunteers. They have stuff outside of tools too (camping/cooking gear). You can view the stuff their inventory before you join: https://toolsnthingslibraryperthwa.myturn.com/library/

The main downside for me is returning the items in the window they're open.

tren··on Amazon now discloses you're buying a license to view Kindle eBooks
Ebooks.com has a filter for DRM free ebooks, unfortunately it's only a small subset of publishers that allow it currently
tren··on Roman Tyrian purple snail dye found in UK for first time
I read Phoenician Secrets: Exploring the Ancient Mediterranean by Sanford Holst recently and found it extremely interesting.
tren··on Developers are not happy with .NET MAUI, but nobody in the team cares about it
We're a dotnet shop and we're looking to rewrite our iOS and Android apps in a cross platform framework. On paper MAUI seems like the perfect fit but reading through the discussion and issues in GitHub it's nearly guaranteed this will go the way of all MS's UI products. The number of unresolved issues for fairly basic functionality and the number of developers voicing their PTSD from MAUI related development has made us steer clear.
tren··on Ask HN: What are thoughts on Walter Isaacson's new biography of Elon Musk?
I found it a very easy and engaging read, even though my perspective of Musk has changed over time. My one criticism is that it seems a bit premature, I feel like the most interesting part of the story is yet to come, he'll either achieve more of his goals or will self immolate.
tren··on Ask HN: What team tools do you use in your startup to organize information?
We use Bookstack to organise most info - it's easy to setup in docker and easy to find and link articles
tren··on Ask HN: Easiest way to set up email form?
If you host on something like Netlify, it's pretty easy to add it as a netlify form.
tren··on Open source hospital price database
I believe only foreigners from countries that we have reciprocal agreement with: https://www.smartraveller.gov.au/before-you-go/health/recipr...
tren··on GitHub is down?
Down from AU
tren··on Ask HN: Are there any working ReCAPTCHA bypass plugins for Firefox?
If Cloudflare is your main problem, you could use privacy pass - https://developers.cloudflare.com/support/firewall/settings/...
tren··on Ask HN: What moonshots do you wish were being attempted?
Looking at using drone seed bombs to imitate natural farming from one straw revolution.
tren··on Ask HN: Best Linux distro for a young kid’s first computer?
I used https://www.sugarlabs.org/ when my kid was quite young, it's worth sticking it on a USB and giving it a shot
tren··on Ask HN: How many of you are open to Piracy again?
Yes, unfortunately this is the case (I work for ebooks.com). Most publishers require us to use DRM and Adobe DRM really sucks, but there isn't other options out there and we don't have the resources to make something better.

We focus quite a bit of effort on educating publishers about moving to DRM-Free as it makes everyone's lives easier and from what we've seen increases publisher sales numbers.

tren··on Mac OS 9
I went for dark castle first thing as well. Says you need to change the display to 2 colours for it to work, I couldn't figure out how to do it.
tren··on Ask HN: Best books read in 2022?
My two favourite books I read this year were both non-fiction:

* Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage - If you enjoy books about persistence in the face of adversity, this has it in spades. When I was in my 20's I saw the movie "Touching the Void" and remember being in total awe at a human's ability to persevere in seemingly impossible situations. Shackleton and his crew bring this power of determination to another level.

* On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft - Reading this gave me another level of respect for Stephen King. He also pointed me towards another excellent book "Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life".

tren··on The Age of PageRank Is Over
I've used Kagi as my primary search engine since they went live and I've been extremely pleased so far. Funnily enough, I only use !g now when I want to get Google Shopping results (for price comparison) or look at product reviews.
tren··on ZLibrary domains have been seized by the United States Postal Inspection Service
We wrote a short article about it here: https://about.ebooks.com/sales-jumped-54-when-this-publisher...
tren··on ZLibrary domains have been seized by the United States Postal Inspection Service
We keep trying to push publishers to allow us to sell their ebooks DRM-free, it really is a win-win. Less customer support for us, more sales for them, no vendor lock-in for the customer. We offer completely DRM-free or watermarked content: https://www.ebooks.com/drm-free/. I wish every publisher would embrace it.
tren··on Ask HN: Examples of Top C# Code?
I like Bitwarden (https://github.com/bitwarden), it's a great app
tren··on Diffusion Bee: Stable Diffusion GUI App for M1 Mac
I've been using this with a Nvidia GPU with 6GB ram:
