tremon··on Microsoft exec called AI scraping 'the largest theft of labor in human history'
I'm not sure how to square

> It's hard for me to imagine a profession that should exist in a utopian society

with

> People should have instant access to food when they're hungry and housing when the weather gets bad

You don't think that farming, baking, and building are professions?

tremon··on Microsoft exec called AI scraping 'the largest theft of labor in human history'
That has not been decided. The only thing that's been decided is that the LLM itself does not have copyright on its output.

Combining info from https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49740907 and https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49740901, it seems that they're relying on TSMC for the first batch and are planning to move production to JASM once that's ready?
tremon··on The Beauty of Roundabouts
It's also only true when compared against a no-frills intersection. A two-lane roundabout has better overall throughput than a two-lane intersection with traffic lights. To increase throughput, they usually add turn lanes to avoid cars having to stop in the through lanes -- but the turn lanes require more road surface than the roundabout would have.
tremon··on The Beauty of Roundabouts
But then, how come you blame this on the existence of roundabouts and not on the lawlessness of drivers?

Yes and no. "rede" is a noun and has two syllables (ray-də) and means address (as in Gettysburg address). It's an archaic word, nowadays we would use "toespraak" (speech) or "lezing" (lecture). The word does share its origin with the modern English "to read", but no Dutch speaker would interpret "rede" to mean the same as a parent reading a child a bedtime story.

And troon == throne, obviously.

tremon··on C Is Not a Low-Level Language (2018)
> Processors have a very weak notion of data types

This is absolutely not true, unless you mean to say that processors should somehow support composite (aka C struct) data types as an instruction primitive. Processor operations have to be strongly typed, by definition. For example, these are the data types supported by operations in the modern x86 instruction set (ignoring vector extensions):

- signed and unsigned integers of 8, 16, 32 and 64 bits

- floating-point decimals of 32, 64 and 80 bits (and 128 via sse)

- nul-terminated byte strings

> For example: casting a `float` to an `int` has a very specific definition in C, and that definition involves altering the pattern of bits

I don't understand this example. Casting a float to an int also has a very specific definition in IEEE-754 and is pretty much universally implemented as a hardware instruction. It has been in the x86 family since its inception: https://www.felixcloutier.com/x86/fisttp

tremon··on LG smart TVs caught logging audio with screen off and snooping on local devices
Do not put words in my mouth. Where in my post did I advocate for any form of action?

That seems to be a recurring theme regardless of the country's economic system. We're two months away from seeing if the US still has a working succession strategy.

tremon··on Ask HN: How do you survive a job you hate which is slowly making you sick?
You're advocating for self-medicating with an over the counter drug over doctor-prescribed (and presumably monitored) drugs? I agree with your stance on SSRIs and don't think they should be used to address situational anxiety, but your suggestion is not an improvement.

To the OP: if you're at a point where you're taking medication to cope with your job, maybe you would be better off taking long term sick leave.

tremon··on AnkiDroid: Google Play no longer allowing Open Collective donation link
Is it really that insane of itself? I don't see many people arguing that Valve is evil for requiring a Steam account to access their game library (ignoring the online activation/DRM question).
tremon··on Evidence of Fraud in an Influential Study About Procrastination
> Trying and seeing what sticks. That's literally it.

I'd like to add a readiness to abandon that which doesn't stick. Otherwise you end up with people going 'round in circles around a campfire.

tremon··on AnkiDroid: Google Play no longer allowing Open Collective donation link
To me it's not really the concept of the app store that's dystopian, it's not that different from a deb or rpm repository. What is dystopian is the level of control the OS vendor maintains over the entire ecosystem.
tremon··on DNS abuse and criminal infrastructure
On the other hand, I struggle to think of a reason how harm could come from delayed activation of a registered public name. Can you describe a use case that cannot be solved by opting for a subdomain of an already-existing domain?
tremon··on The internet is kind of a predatory cesspit now
If you're in the traditional West, you did get a choice. And many actively voted for violent, cruel, oppressive predator shit. And I don't just mean MAGA, that's equally true for AfD, FN, FdI, SSZ, Spartans, ReformUK, Likud, etc.

That's true. They are uniquely proud of their ignorance though. It is, as they say, the best -- the greatest. No one does it better. I mean, did you know that dumb was spelled with a -b at the end?
tremon··on Where did all the public bathrooms go?
You cannot have police enforcement for petty misdemeanors like those, that's way too expensive. The only means-appropriate correction is social enforcement (i.e. norms and values), but too many people think that society is other peoples' problem. That's one of the downsides of a hyper-individualist society.
tremon··on Canada will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down
> The moment it becomes clear that the cost of losing is personal jail time for you and your family

That has always been clear, seeing how it is the default mode of operation for empires throughout history. The solution here is separation of powers: the ruler itself is bound by rules and institutions that provide a check on their power, and in turn those institutions protect the ruler after stepping down.

It is Trump and the Republican party that chose to abandon that solution. There already is no going back from that choice.

tremon··on Canada will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down
You can't assume things will return to the previous normal while the Supreme Court maintains its current composition either.
tremon··on The August 17 outage
It's not necessary to perform secret scanning on a per-commit basis. The most efficient way is to just scan all blob objects being pushed; there is no reason to even be aware of an object's location (tree path or commit) except for diagnostic messages.

> I can navigate in GitHub directly to any individual commit

You can do the same with the git command line client. The overhead you claim is already in the git on-disk format. Github might very well duplicate this information in a database somewhere, but it doesn't follow from your observation.

Why is Github talking about number of commits here, and not pushes? Are there a lot of tools/people using github as an online editing platform?

> What if [..] treat myself [vs] treat others?

There's an obvious asymmetry in your rephrasing. The parents quote says "do unto others as they do unto you", not as you do to yourself. If you treat yourself terrible and hurt yourself, is it okay for others to hurt you too?
