Fretting over whether or how it's coming is simply illogical, focusing efforts on making sure it's used properly is the only forward thinking, reality accepting solution.
I joke of course, but Apple builds monopolies they have tight control over, sue for anything and basically tell everyone who doesn't like it to screw off (and they can because they have the monopoly). As much as I like their design and hardware, as far as corporate entities go, they're kind of a jerk.

NASA, despite its huge budget cuts, in the last decade has operated three rovers on Mars, landed one new one (via spectacular jet crane awesomeness). They've built new types of rockets, taken pictures of the universe, continued to do valuable research in science and space. Continued to be a major contributor to the ISS. And much much more.
I think the real question here is, where have you been for the last decade?
The people who own the systems that they've meticulously picked out and spent thousands on will go to the cinema no matter what, because they deeply care about the media and are willing to pay to see it early on the big screen. It really comes down to people just not caring about seeing movies, and has little to do with the at home equipment.
The technology isn't perfect, but to say that it will never "work" is just ludicrous.
I see what you did there.
Though really I just don't want to live on this planet anymore.
Unless ActionScript somehow becomes the dominant programming language of the future, in which case the future looks darker than I thought.
